Robert Gibson was born in Mercer County, PA December 1833 and died at the home of his son, Charles, in Cherry County, Neb Nov. 4, 1917 at the age of 83 years, 11 months and 27 days.
At the age of 22, Mr. Gibson married Miss Mary Griffin, to which union 12 children were born, 5 of whom preceded him to the great beyond. In 1881 his wife died, after which Mr. Gibson kept the younger children together until all grew to maturity.
Shortly after his marriage in 1855, he and his family traveled by overland in a wagon to Michigan and a few years later by the same method to near Streeter, IL. where he lived 4 or 5 years. Then he cam to Gillman, IL. where he lived 4 or 5 years. In 1875 he came to Abaline, KS and 7 years later came to Custer County NE taking up a homestead about 16 miles south west of Ansley. About 1891, he sold his homestead to Charles Chrisman, and since that time he has made his home with his children.
Mr. Gibson was a devoted Christian from childhood coming from good old Cumberland Presbyterian stock. He united with the Methodist Church, however, and was loyal to his church and his Master. When he came to Custer County, he was quick to see the need of moral and religious teaching in the rural sections so far from town and united with the United Brethren Church not far from his homestead. He held several official positions from this church and was also licensed as an exhorter, and when preachers were scarce and services few, he would preach at different school houses and help in revival meetings.
He leaves to mourn his departure, seven children as follows:
Hugh W. Gibson, Nash OK
Frank Gibson, Funkhouser, Scottsbluff, NE
John A. Gibson, Cherry Co, NE
Charles H. Gibson, Cherry Co, NE
Alfred R. Gibson, Omaha, NE
William Orvil Gibson, Omaha, NE
also 38 grandchildren, 67 great grandchildren, and 2 great great grandchildren.
Remains were brought back to Custer County and funeral services were held in the Eudell Church, and were conducted by Rev. W.L. Handsell, paster of M.E. Church at Ansley. Interment was made at Eudell Cemetary.
Robert's body was relocated from Eudell cemetery to Box Elder cemetery, Crumro, Custer, Nebraska.
