- Death claimed Mrs. Margaret Neal, widow of the late John M Neal, at her home, 20 West Miami Street, at noon Thursday, August 12, at the age of 77 years. She had been in failing health the past decade, suffering from heart trouble and high blood pressure.
Mrs. Neal was Canadian born, but had resided in Miami county over half a century. Her maiden name was Margaret J. Miller, and she was born April 21, 1866 at Sarnia, Ontario, daughter of the late John and Jane Miller. When she came to Miami county at he age of 24 to visit her aunts, Mrs. Tom Fleming and Mrs. Alex Farnsworth, and her uncle Dr. Peter Morrison, she met John Melvin Neal, young farmer and teacher, and later they were married. They established their home on a farm in Sugar Creek township and in 1911 moved to Paola. For many years the Neal home has been at 201 W. Miami, where both of their deaths occurred, Mr. Neal, having died there on April 1, 1937.
Two daughters and one son were born to Mr. and Mrs Neal, one daughter, Mrs Ruth Starr preceding the mother in death in March 1940. Those surviving are Vera Neal of the home, and Tom Neal, MM1/C in a Seabee Unit attached to the U.S. Marines. Also the deceased leaves a sister, Mrs. W.R. Edwards of Los Angeles. and two grandchildren Leonard and Louise Starr, who have made their homes with the grandmother since their mothers death. The son, Tom, has just completed basic training at New River, North Carolina, He came for the funeral rites and on leaving this weekend will report at a new post on the west coast, where his unit has been transferred.
