- His obituary appeared on 18 Oct 1978 in the Tribune Press in Gouverneur, St. Lawrence, New York, as follows: "Walter C. Best. Walter C. Best, 84, of 9 Cleveland Ave. [Canton], former associate of Mayhew Wholesale Co. and retired Woolworth Co. store manager, died Wednesday, Oct. 11, at 11:30 p.m. in the Canton-Potsdam Hospital where he had been a patient for two days.
"The funeral was held Saturday, Oct. 14, at 2 p.m. at the home of a daughter, Mrs. Joseph (Georgiana) Wranesh, Rev.
Richard Stone, pastor of the Canton Presbyterian Church, and Rev. William Masters of the United Church of Richville, officiating. Burial was in Maple Grove Cemetery, Richville.
"A Masonic service was conducted at 8 p.m. Friday. Arrangements are with the Denesha-Gardner Funeral Home.
"Surviving are his wife, Nellie; a son, Frederick, Gouverneur; two daughters, Mrs. Wranesh and Mrs. Reginald (Betty)
Smith, Canton; two stepdaughters, Mrs. Howard (Gretchen) Ritchie, Hudson Falls, and Mrs. Dennis (Anne Marie) Real, Roy, Utah; two brothers, Theodore, Watertown, and Robert, Seminole, Fla; 16 grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, a niece and three nephews.
"He was born in Ogdensburg July 20, 1894, son of Austin and Georgiana Lowery Best and was a navy veteran of World War I.
"He first married Alice Spooner Sept. 16, 1919. She died Dec. 25, 1944. He married Mrs. Nellie Overacker Harmon in
1946.
"Mr. Best was employed by the F. W. Woolworth Co. from 1912 to 1936 and served as manager of several company stores. For many years he was associated with Mayhew Wholesale Co. of Canton.
"He was a member of the Canton Presbyterian Church, 42-year member of Richville Lodge 633, F&AM; served on the
draft board during World War II and was a Republican town committeeman in the Town of DeKalb. Mr. Best was a former justice of the peace in the Town of DeKalb, was a past president of the Richville School District and a past director and vice president of the Gouverneur and St. Lawrence County Fair Association.
