  	His obituary appeared on 22 Sep 1915 in the St. Lawrence Republican and Ogdensburgh Weekly Journal in Ogdensburg, St. Lawrence, New York, as follows: "Morristown, Sept. 20.--J. V. B. Stilwell passed away Friday morning after a long illness. The funeral took place Sunday afternoon from the house. Burial was in Pine Hill cemetery. In the absence of his pastor, Rev. C. E. Fay, Dr. Ferguson of Hammond officiated. Mr. Stillwell was 82 years of age. He was a Civil war veteran and at the time of his death was commander of Alfred J. Hooker Post [GAR]. Besides his wife he leaves a son, C. W. Stilwell of Philadelphia, a daughter, Mrs. DeRenzie of Braeside, Ont., and four grandchildren. His children were with him during the last weeks of his illness and cared for him. Mrs. Stilwell will make her home with the son at Philadelphia."
