- Martha Vardaman Braden Darnell, known to those who loved her as Moppy, died peacefully on February 15, 2016 in the arms of her daughter, Katharine Fox O'Connor, in Atlanta.
Moppy was born in Greenwood, Mississippi on July 27, 1943. She was the first daughter of William Braden Jr. and Martha Vardaman Braden. She is survived by her daughter and and her son in law, J. Gerard O' Connor, her sister Betsey Braden Teague of Plano, Texas, her brother in law, William Teague, nephews, William Christopher Teague and Robert Scott Teague, and grand-nieces and nephews.
Moppy was not only brilliant but more importantly, she was kind. There was never a person, cat, or dog in need whom she met and did not help. She loved not only her family and friends, but also roses, books, old movies, and especially her cats and dogs. She was a consummate conversationalist with the wit of the Delta at the tip of her tongue. There was hardly a topic, from literature to movies, history to politics, where Moppy did not have an opinion of value usually offered with a comical twist and a gleam in her eyes.
She especially loved Greenwood and more so, the people of Greenwood, with whom she had been friends since birth.
The streets of heaven are brighter with the addition of her soul, and the lives of those left without her on this earth are dimmer by far.
Graveside services will be held March 7, 2016 3:30Pm in Odd Fellows Cemetery. There will be a visitation on March 7, 2016 4:00pm till 5:30pm at the Episcopal Church of Nativity.
