  	Event Type: LifeSketch Description: The first oil well in Lambton was discovered on their farm. William was bought out by the Oil Company, and became Manager of Works. The first oil discoveries were made at "The Springs" near Petrolia in 1861.  In 1862 more oil was found by drilling.  At that time the homes of most people were lighted by candles and the wealthy used whale oil, at a dollar a gallon.  In 1854 a Nova Scotian Dr. Abraham Gesner had invented kerosene that was a cheaper fuel for lighting.  Petrolia was where the inter-continental oil refining empire began.  In 1866 oil was located in the swampy woods west of Petrolia and a host of wells were drilled.  At first the oil had been hauled to Wyoming that was on the main railway line but a spur line was built to Petrolia and the town began a boom.
