- Thomas Gillespie came to Canada before 1820 as his daughter Agnes was born here. His older daughter Sarah was born in Ireland, possibly in November of 1817, and baptized in Carnmoney on Aug 1, 1820. Thus we can determine that they emigrated to Canada. He was assessed in Hamilton Twp., Northumberland Co. in 1822 on lot 7, Con. 1; 1823 lot 5 Con 1; 1824 lot 2 Con 1; and 1826 - 1835 lot 11 Con. A. It is interesting to note that Wm. McCormick was assessed on lot 11 Con A. in 1842 and is perhaps a brother to Agnes. Thomas was still living in 1839 when the township took a census. By 1850 son William is living on lot 17, Con. 3 of Hamilton Twp. with Agnes who is a widow and other members of the family. Thomas was age 38 when he was enrolled in the 4th Company of the 1st Regiment of the Northumberland Militia under Captain Spalding. I do not know the circumstances of his death nor where he may have been buried. When Susan, the daughter of Thomas and Agnes Gillespie was baptized at St. Peter's Anglican Church on Nov. 19, 1838, the name of the godfather given was Thomas Spear, whose children Thomas and Mary were also baptized on Nov. 19, 1938, and the godparents names given were their own. A. N. Bethune was the officiating minister. They were all residents of Hamilton Township, and in fact in 1875, W. & T. Spear are named on the north half (50 acres) of Lot 1 in Concession A. and in 1875 the south half of this lot has the name T. Gillise as the owner of that 50 acres. Is it possible that in 1838 Thomas & Agnes were neighbours? In assessment records between 1824 and 1835 Thomas Gillespie was assessed for Lot II Con A and in 1842 William McCormick was assessed for Lot II Con A. Thomas died in 1839 - 1840. I believe that Wm. McCormack is Thomas's wife's brother because her name was Agnes McCormack.
