John passed away peacefully at the age of 94. He is survived by his daughters Barbara (phil), Bonnie (Jim) and Debra; his grandchildren Kelsey (Rod), Marty (Annie), Leana and Christy (Kyle) and great grandchildren Tyler, Alexa, Kadence, Aidren, Hailey and Liam. He is also survived by his yougest brother, David and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by Joy, his wife of 71 years, his grandchildren Ryan and Lisa, his parents and brothers Alex, George, and Charlie.
John's parent and three brothers emigrated from Scotland in 1923 on the maiden voyage of the Athenia, the first steamship that was sunk in combat in WWII. They first settled in Regina, Sask. where John and David were born. In 1929 the family moved to Chilliwack, BC and ran a dairy farm which kept the boys busy.
John moved to Vancouver during WWII and worked at Burrard Shipyard. He got his welding ticket and worked at Westcoast Shipyard and various truck and tractor businesses in Vancouver until he moved to the forest industry, starting out at Harrison Lake and other coastal logging operations with Cattermole-Trethewey and BC Forest Products. He lived most of his adult life in Richmond, BC. He became a successful self-employed logging contractor running logging camps in remote areas along the west coast. Although he never learned to fly, he enjoyed owning aircraft to move his crews in and out of camp. He dabbled in multuple business ventures, gold mining in the Yukon, a hydraulic repair/chroming shop, no idea was a bad idea! He was the proud owner of 2 classic cars for a time. In his retirement he took up golf and even managed 3 hole-in-ones. John enhoyed the company of many business associates, acquaintances, and friends that he made over the years. To his family and friends he was known to be honest, fair, a good lisstener and generous (sometimes to a faullt). He said he had a good life and was fortunate to have a loving family, however, we are the fortunate ones, and we will miss him dearly.
A celebration of John's life will be held at a later date but for now raise a glass and bid him a fond farewell as he 'moves on'.
