  	Mrs. Margaret M. Smith, who died Sunday at a Portland private sanitarium, was the only life member of the Portland chapter of American Gold Star Mothers. She was a charter member of the organization and first vice-president when illness prevented her further participation. Funeral of Mrs. Verna Henrietta Smith, 53, who died Sunday at her home, 2745 N.E. 32d place, will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Pearson funeral church. A native of LaCrosse, Wis., Mrs. Smith had lived in Portland since 1922. She is survived by her widower. Henry B. Smith; a son, William Charles Smith, Portland, and a daughter, Mrs. Janet Marion Nicholson, Grants Pass. She was a member of Westminster Presbyterian church and Portland chapter No. 97 of the Order of Eastern Star. [The Oregonian, 16 May 1950, p17]
