He is shown as having a wife and two sons, one over the age of 12 and the other under the age of 12 when he travelled to Canada. This would suggest that he would be in his thirties at the time of emigration placing his date of birth before 1790.

This  would have been based on William Bell papers found in the vault at St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church in Perth, ON and would possibly now be located at the Presbyterian Church of Canada archives. Another possibility would be the Bell diaries, part of the Queen's University archival holdings in Kingston, ON.
