  	J A Murdoch established the first Birtle newspaper, Birtle Observer. This paper operated Dec 1884 to Jan 1889. Birtle and district are fortunate to have this resource for historical purposes. Feb 1889 J A Murdoch re-established at Pilot Mound, Manitoba where he carried on with the newspaper business. His son Walpole Murdoch established a newspaper at Hartney Manitoba. In the 1920s the Murdoch family made a donation to the then new Birtle hospital (St Mary's) in memory of their parents.
