The following is from the Lanark Era:
In her 73rd year, Mrs. Henry Mather died on Wednesday, April 127th, at her home in the village. For over a year her health had been failing rapidly, and in January of this year she went to Kingston for medical examination, only to find that the malady was such as must in a few months prove fatal. Returning home she was confined to her bed, and, although her strength gradually failed, she bore her suffering cheerfully and patiently until the end. Possessing a remarkably strong constitution, her life story was one of almost tireless industry, and, at all times she was ready and willing to lend a helping hand where there was need. Her large-hearted, generous nature made her a good friend and neighbor and her unselfish kindliness will long be remembered by all who knew her.
During the nine years in which she lived in Lanark she was a valued member of the local Women's Institute and was always deeply interested in the work of the church to which she belonged.
The Late Mrs Mather was formerly Ella H. Baird, a daughter of Andrew Baird and Margaret Scott, both deceased, and was born at Hopetown, on the homesteaad now owned by Mr. George Stead. Forty six years ago she was married to Mr Henry Mather and together they made their home first at Middleville, then at Balderson and finally at Lanark. During the last frew weeks of her illness, Mr. Mather's health began to fail rapidly and on March 17th he passed away, just six weeks prior to her death.
A family of two daughters and four sons survive: Mrs John McCurdy (Margaret), Hopetown; Mrs. Wm. McLean (Irma), Lanark; John, Scott, Harold and William, all in the Balderson district. A brother and sister of deceased were both will-known in Lanark, the late Andrew Baird, and Agnes, the late Mrs Wm. Robertson. Another sister, Margaret, died at the age of nineteen.
The funeral service was held on Friday, April 29th in Lanark United Church and was largely attended. Officiating clergymen were Rev. T. McNaught of Balderson and Rev. B.V. McLean and Rev. A.E. Silver of Lanark. Acting as pallbearers were Messrs. Colin McNicol, John A. Munro, John Miller, Ben. Willis, R.B. McIntyre and James Penny. Covering the casket were beautiful floral emblems from the family, Bathurst Township Council, Mrs. Baird and daughters, the grandchildren and the Lanark Women's Institute.
