----------------------------------------------
The death occurred in Carleton Place and District Memorial Hospital on Wednesday, February 12, 1986, of Erma Mather of Middleville, widow of the late John N. Mather. She was in her 87th year.
Erma was born in Dalhousie Township, August 31, 1899, the eldest daughter of the family of Archibald NcNichol's and Marion Penman. In 1909, the McNichols moved to Drummond Township.
On March 14, 1923 she was united in marriage to John Nairn Mather of Lanark township and they had a family of four sons and one daughter, namely - Earl, Glenn (deceased), Muriel Somerville of Ottawa, Lyall and Ellis of Middleville. She is also survived by one sister, Mrs. Annie Scott of Stettler, Alberta. Erma was well-known and respected over a wide area.
During her residence here she was a diligent worker in the Missionary Society and Ladies Aid of Zion Congregational Church and from 1924 on in the United Congregation of Zion Congregational and St Paul's Presbyterian Church merging into the United Church in 1925. She was a life member of the United Church Missionary Society and supported these always.
In earlier days when farmers butchered their own supply of beef and pork, senior residents in the village were assured of a parcel of fresh meat being delivered and throughout the uear, a plate of fresh cookies.
Mrs. Mather was always conscious of the elderly and underprivileged persons in our community. In 1983, lacking nursing care facilities in our village, she became a resident of Nel-Gor Castle Nursing Home in Carleton Place, to be closer to her physician and hospital services, which were becoming more frequently required. Erma had been in failing health since last October.
The funeral service was neld from the Young Funeral Home in Lanark Village on Friday, February 14, at 1:30 pm with interment in Middleville Greenwood Cemetery. In addition to the floral tributes many donations were made to Middleville Trinity Church in her memory. Erma was predeceased by an infant brother Ronald of Balderson and Joan of Lanark.
In addition to her immediate family she is also survived by seven grandchildren and two great grandchildren. The sympathy of neighbours and a host of relatives is extended to the bereaved family.
