  	OBITUARY Sault Star - Feb. 25, 1939 WILLIAM J. HARTEN One of the oldest of the pioneers residents of St. Joseph Island, William J. Harten died of a ruptured appendix in the Matthews Memorial Hospital, Richards Landing, Sat. Feb. 11. He was in his 80th year. The son of Alex Hartin and Elizabeth Harrison of Strathroy,Ontario; the deceased was born at Russell, Ont. Dec. 25, 1859. He came to St. Joe with his mother in 1879 following his father and brothers, who had come two years before. The family settled on a farm on the I line. In Oct. 1888, he married Anne Jane Rankin of Forest, Ont. The couple had eight children, two daughters and six sons. One son Alex, died two years ago. About six years ago Mr. Harten retired from farming and made his home with his son, Will. He was of cheerful, kindly disposition and was always ready to lend a helping hand. The family was noted for its hospitality. Surviving are Mrs. Harten, two daughters, Mrs. R. Powel of Arnprior and Mrs. R. Whitley of the Island. Five sons, Will, George, Andy, Edwin and Godfrey Harten of St. Joe, one sister Mrs. E.Hynes of Kenora and one brother David of St. Joe. Rev. F. G. Stotesbury of Richard's Landing United Church conducted the funeral from the home of Will Harten, Wed. Feb. 15. Pall bearers of the deceased were five sons and R. Whitley, a son-in-law. Interment was in Richards Landing cemetery. The family received many beautiful floral offerings, cards of sympathy and telegrams.
