Mr. Peter McGregor
One of the oldest residents of the town left us last week when the venerable and well-known Mr. Peter McGregor passed away. Deceased has been ill but a short time, and most people were much surprised at the announcement of his death, as he had been up and around at his work not long before. The best explanation of the cause of his death is perhaps old age, for his years were fully eighty three when the end came.
Deceased was born in Perthshire, Scotland, and he was a typical Highland Scotchman. In his boyhood and early manhood he was gamekeeper on some estate in his native district, but when he grew up to maturer years he left the old sod for Canada finally landing in Perth, where bit by bit he learned the trade of mason, stonecutter and plasterer, developiing into a very handy man in all these things. It is about forty-five years ago since he came to Perth, not long after he married, his wife dying something over thirty years ago without leaving a family. About 1871 he was married to Miss Maria McMillan, 1st line Drummond, who survives him, together with three children - Alexander, Winnipeg; Peter, at home, and Clara, also at home. One son, Bruce, died some years ago.
Deceased was a member of the Masonic fraternity, and the funeral, which was a very large one, took place under the auspices of True Briton's lodge, on Sunday afternoon, their ritual being read at the grave, the Rev. Mr. Frizell, Presbyterian minister, assisting. Mr. McGregor was of a genial, kindly nature, well known to everyone. He was an omnivorous reader, and was a most dilligent attendant at the public library and any place where newspapers could be had, especially the Scotch papers.
