- Robert J. (Bert) Shanks
After a lengthy illness Bert Shanks passed away at Ottawa General Hospital, Ottawa, December 27, 1979.
Born at Playfairville a son of Isaac Shanks and Margaret Paul. Brother of Isaac and four sisters predeceased.
He married Vida Moss, March 21, 1923 and took up residence on a farm near Snow Road. To this union were born, James, Aileen and Reginald, a foster son Carl Moss.
At his wife's death, August 14, 1955, he moved to Perth working for Arnold Carson and Alex Barclay Landscaping and Paving.
In 1968 he married Wilma Paul gathering into his family Bill, Edith and Elizabeth.
He was a member of Presbyterian church, Perth acting as manager for many years. Bert also belonged to the Cornucopia Lodge of Snow Road. He always enjoyed fishing, hunting and camping.
IOOF Lodge service was held Sunday, Dec 30th, evening. The funeral took place at Blair and Sons Chapel, Dec. 31, 1979. Conducted by Rev. McKenzie and Rev. Forrester. While the funeral left for interment in Crawford's cemetery a favorite hymn, Safe in the Arms of Jesus was played. Flowers and donations showed the esteem in which he was held by friends, neighbours and family.
Pallbearers were : Robert Roffey, Lawrence Ryder, Ray Hughes, Orville Stewart, Bob Scott, Carman Gillespie.
Honorary Pallbearers were: Robert Muller, Ellis Benedict, Alex Barclay, Hill Conboy.
Flower Bearers were Grandsons Harry and David Shanks, Raymond and Kenton Shanks, Garry Conboy and Murray Elliott.
