- Death of Robert Johnston
Death again visited our community this week, this time claiming one of our residents of long standing in the person of Robert Johnston. Mr. Johnston, who was in his 79th year, had been in failing health for the past few years, although able to be around right up the last. He passed peacefully away at the home of his daughter, Mrs. R. J. Arnold, on Tuesday, January 21st. The kind and friendly interest he always had in others will be much missed by his wide circle of acquaintances.
Robert Johnston was born at Goderich, Ontario, on March 17th, 1851. He came west to Manitoba fifty years ago, settling first at Emerson. A year later he married Miss Jean Halliday at that place, and after residing at Emerson a few years went to North Dakota to live. He later returned to southern Manitoba, and 21 years ago came north to Dauphin where he opened a barber shop, being associated in the business with his two sons, Stanley and Bert. He retired from business ten years ago.
Left to mourn his loss are his wife; five sons, R. Halliday, Logan, Montana; Stanley M., Port Arthur, Ont.; Bert, Dauphin; Garth F., Prairie River, Sask.; Isaac C., Gilbert Plains; two daughters, Mrs. R. J. Arnold, Dauphin, and Mrs. W. E. Messig of Minneapolis, Minnesota. There are nineteen grandchildren.
The funeral will take place on Friday, the service being held at the United Church. Rev. A. W. Lochead will officiate.
