- MATHER - George Bertram, lovingly known as "Bert " died on November 25, 2007 at Saskatoon City Hospital. Bert was born on December 2, 1915 at Holstein, Ontario, the son of John Mather and Mary Ellen Philp. The eldest of four children, Bert grew up on the family farm where he learned the values which shaped and guided his entire life: hard work, the importance of family and community and a commitment to service which was rooted in his Christian beliefs.
He was educated at Holstein Public and Continuation Schools, Mount Forest High School, Victoria College and Emmanuel College at the University of Toronto and Princeton Theological Seminary earning the degrees of B.A., M.A., B.D., Th.M and later, a D. D. from the University of Saskatchewan.
He was ordained as a minister of the United Church of Canada in 1944 and served churches in Sexsmith, Donalda, Vegreville and Calgary, Alberta and in Davidson and Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. He also served as a Field Secretary of the United Church Board of Evangelism and Social Service.
Bert met Amanda Wiens at a youth camp and later at the University of Toronto. They were married on June 10, 1942. Their son, John was born while they served in Sexsmith and their daughter, Gwen was born when they served in Donalda. They shared 59 years of marriage until Amanda's death on June 1, 2001.
On December 30, 2005, Bert married Rowena McLellan in a beautiful marriage ceremony with both families present. Their time together brought them both much happiness and enriched their lives and the lives of both of their families.
Bert was predeceased by his brother, Fred and his sister, Laura. Surviving are his wife, Rowena; his son, John (Eneyda) of Doha, Qatar; his daughter, Gwen (Peter) Thomson of Saskatoon; grandsons, Steven (Jaime), Matthew (Amanda), Sebastian, Andy and granddaughter, Jillian; brother, Harry of Mount Forest. Lovingly remembered by numerous nieces and nephews; a dear family friend, Hilary Fraser of Dartmouth, N.S. and by Rowena's children and their families.
The Funeral Service will be held at McClure United Church on Thursday, November 29 at 1:30 p.m.
