?b?Unexpected Death of Dr. William Manuel?/b?
Wealthy and Prominent Resident of Ottawa Passes Away in Scotland
Dr. William Manuel, a wealthy and prominent resident of Ottawa for many years, has died rather suddenly at the old family home in Scotland, just at the time he intended to return to Ottawa. Word to this effect was received Saturday afternoon by Mr. Wentworth Greene, his solicitor in Ottawa.
Death occurred at the residence of the Manuel family at Treeshanks, Hart Hill, Lanarkshire. Dr. Manuel had spent several months in the old land, and only a few weeks ago Mr. Greene received a letter- from him stating that he intended to return to Canada and to Ottawa about the middle of the present month. While many of Dr. Manuel's friends knew that his health was in a precarious condition, they were shocked and grieved to hear of his sudden death. Until correspondence is received from Scotland, no details can be added to the news contained in the cable.
The late Dr. Manuel was president of the Ottawa Curling Club, and was heavily interested in many financial undertakings in Ottawa and throughout Canada. His wealth was chiefly inherited from his uncle, the late John Manuel, who in turn had inherited a share of the millions realized in the lumber industry by his relative, the late Col. Allan Gilmour. Dr. Manuel's brother, James, another prominent citizen of Ottawa for many years, died on Feb. 20, 1918. The nearest relatives of the deceased, who was unmarried, who, it is thought, will inherit a large portion of the estate, reside in Scotland. They are his sister, Mrs. Arthur, and her children, and the sons and daughters of his brother, the late Rev. David Manuel. Dr. Manuel practised his profession of medicine in Scotland as a young man, but did not resume it after coming to Canada. He lived in the ?b?Manuel residence at 36 Vittoria street?/b? until that property was acquired by the Dominion government, and since that time had not taken another permanent residence here.
