- MR MANUEL'S DEATH DEEPLY REGRETTED
Was President of Ottawa Curling Club and Honorary President Vittoria Bowling CIub
Deep regret was expressed in the sporting fraternity of the Capital, particularly among the curlers and lawn bowlers, last night when it became known that Mr. James Manuel, President of the Ottawa Curling Club had passed away. Though Mr Manuel had been ill for a week or so, it was not thought that his sickness was of a serious nature. Hopes were ! entertained, in fact, that he would be able to be up and around in a few days, so the news of his death comes as a profound shock to his confreres. The Ottawa Curling Club's headquarters on O'Conner Street, remained closed last night, all games scheduled being postponed as a mark of respect to their late president, while at the Glebe and Rideau rinks, tribute was likewise paid to the deceased gentleman. The Ottawa Curling Club members will attend in a body the funeral of the late Mr Manuel, and the Rideau and Glebe-Club, as well as the Canadian Branch of the Royal Caledonian Curling Association, will be represented.
Few, if any, of Ottawa's citizens held as high a place in the hearts of the Ottawa curlers and lawn bowlers as the late Mr. James Manuel. Succeeding his uncle, the late John Manuel, as president of the Ottawa Club on his death, several years ago, Mr. Manuel had shown the same kindly interest manifested by his predecessor in the affairs of the Ottawas. Mr. John Manuel was instrumental in having the former headquarters of the Ottawas built on Vittoria street ten years ago, and it was through the generosity of Mr. James Manuel that the Ottawas were able to acquire and complete their present rink, greens and clubhouse on O'Connor street. The deceased was also honorary president of the Vittoria Lavn Bowling Club and was the donor of the property on Kent street, used as the Vittoria greens.
The late Mr. James Manuel, while his health permitted it, followed out the fine example set by his late uncle and was a conspicuous figure at all the important curling and bowling fixtures in which his clubs were interested, his kindly nature and charming personality invariable serving as an additional inspiration to the Ottawa curlers and Vittona bowlers. Last week, the Ottawa Curlers got into the final for the Governor-General's Prize and it was one of the greatest regrets of his life that Mr. Manuel was not able to attend to see them carry off the honors. Among the curlers and lawn bowlers, as well as in many local institutions, to which he had added his benevolence and energy, the late Mr Manuel will be greatly missed.
Vice President T. C. Boville, of the Ottawas, as well as officers of the Rideau and Glebe Curung clubs and the Vittoria, Ottawa, Civil Service and Highland Park lawn Howling Clubs paid glowing tribute last evening to the memory of the late Mr. Manuel, whose many virtues had endeared him to all with whom he came in contact, and who will always hold a warm place in the hearts of those who are interested in the games he played and loved so well.
