- At age 20 William was proficient in the use of nearly all band musical insturments and accepted a position with the Blakeley Concert & Oratorio Company as tenor singer. Later he was a member of the Harry Robinson Minstrel Company, as a tenor singer, traveling with them for four years. William was so versatile that he could fill replace any absent member on a moments notice during Company performances.

Breeding of trotting horses |
- In February he left the DePere Agricultural Works to become associated with his brother-in-law David Thomas in the breeding of trotting horses on a farm six and a half miles southwest of Ripon. Among the trotting horses bred here, one, 'Barney F' made a record of 2:29 1/2 when five years old. Mr Workman also brought to Brown County 'Achilles', #2535 in Wallaces's Trotting Register, the first registered trotting-bred stallion brought to the county.
