6713 | House Burnt About half-past two o'clock, on Friday morning, 3rd inst., about an hour later than fires take place in Ottawa, the fire alarm bells pealed out their dreaded notes, awakening the citizens, who hurriedly rushed for the theatre of the fire, which was seen to be in New England. The fire company had their engine out promptly and were soon at the fire, which was found to be confined to a frame building occupied and owned by a man named Miller and his family. When the fire company arrived the building was wholly engulphed in flames, and as no water could be obtained they could put forth no efforts to save the building. The fire is believed to have been caused by the usual means, namely, by hot ashes left in the kitchen. When discovered by the inmates they had just sufficient time to escape with their lives. All household effects were destroyed, and as there was no insurance on the building the loss will be a heavy one to the owner. The Almonte Gazette Almonte, Ontario, Canada 17 Sep 1875 pg. 2 col. 3 Almonte - Between 2 and 3:00 on Friday morning last the Almonte fire bell rang out loud and clear, thus giving warning that a fire was in progress. The scene of the fire was situated in "New England". The fire company turned out with their engine but before they could reach the scene the house which was on fire was well night consumed. The house belonged to Mr. Charles Miller, an employee of the factories. From what we can learn the fire was caused by hot ashes which had been placed in an outhouse attached to the building. The house with its contents was entirely consumed and the inmates were not aware of the disaster that had befallen them until some of the burning timbers began falling about their ears. There was no insurance. The Perth Courier Perth, Ontario, Canada September 17, 1875 | Miller, Charles (I33932)

6749 | http://www.canadianheadstones.com/qc/view.php?id=136967 James Stuart Douglas, Jr. (1867? 1949), popularly known as Rawhide Jimmy, was a Canadian-American businessman and mining executive. Douglas was the son of James Douglas, a Canadian mining engineer and executive. Born in Quebec, Jimmy Douglas grew up in Phoenixville, Pennsylvania, where his father managed the Chemical Copper Company. Douglas left home at 17 and moved west to Manitoba, where he homesteaded. Suffering from asthma, he moved to the Arizona Territory, in the United States, in the hope that the drier climate might provide relief. After a year in Sulpher Springs Valley, where he cultivated strawberries, he moved to Bisbee at his father's request to work as an assayer for the Copper Queen Mine. In 1892 Douglas moved to Prescott to work for the Commercial Mining Company, an affiliate of the Phelps Dodge mining company. Eight years later he was transferred to Sonora, Mexico, to manage the copper mine and smelter at Pilares and Nacozari; and directed construction of a railroad from Douglas, Arizona to Nacozari. While at Pilares, he acquired his nickname, "Rawhide Jimmy", because of his technique of using rawhide to protect the rollers on mining equipment. Afterward, he moved to Cananea, Sonora, to manage the copper operations there. His tenure was marked by riots and labor problems, which were endemic to the Cananea mines. In 1912, Douglas returned to central Arizona, where he took an option on the United Verde Extension (UVX) property, a speculative venture to find the down-faulted extension of the great "United Verde" ore body near Jerome, Arizona. In 1914, with funds near exhaustion, an exploration drift cut bonanza copper ore. The UVX became a profitable mine. During 1916 alone, the mine produced $10 million worth of copper, silver and gold, of which $7.4 million was profit.[3] The UVX paid $55 million in dividends during its life (1915? 1938), making Douglas a wealthy man. In 1939, Douglas retired to Canada, where he died of heart failure in 1949. Douglas' Jerome mansion is open to the public as the Jerome State Historic Park. Douglas' son, Lewis W. Douglas, who also entered the mining business, went on to a successful political career as a Congressman from 1927? 33; and the Ambassador to the United Kingdom (1947? 51). The copper-roofed cottage on the hillside adjacent to the Douglas Mansion was built as a wedding present for Lewis. | Douglas, James Stuart (I32926)

6750 | https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nenthead The small village of Nenthead in the county of Cumbria is one of England's highest villages, at around 450 m (1,500 feet).[1] It was not built until the middle of the 18th century and was one of the earliest purpose-built industrial villages in Britain. Nenthead was a major centre for lead and silver mining in the North Pennines of Britain. The first smelt mill was built at Nenthead in 1737 by George Liddle, and this was subsequently expanded by the London Lead Company. By 1882 the smelt mill was capable of smelting 8,000 bings of ore per annum.[2] Rampgill Nenthead Nenthead in 1861 was a bustling village of some 2,000 people, mostly Methodist and employed by the Quaker-owned London Lead Company in the Nenthead Mines - some of the most productive in the country. The benevolent Quakers built, amongst other things, housing, a school, a reading room, public baths and a wash-house for the miners and their families. Nenthead was the first village in the UK to have electric street lighting from excess power generated by the mines. The mines were responsible for as many good things as well as bad, life expectancy was short but the children were being educated. For many mine explorers Nenthead is a mecca as many miles of accessible mines remain. It features some of the most stunning mines in the country with several horse whims and an 80 m (260-foot) engine shaft in Rampghill. The mines closed in 1961 and there is a heritage centre displaying their history. | Swindle, Thomas (I14410)
