6518 | Hazel Barber Hazel was born in Restoule, the second of two children of Isabelle (Griffith) and William James Clarke. she would have met Donald Barber during one of the community activities such as grain thrashing, dinners or dances. They were married on November 12, 1924 at St. Alban's Anglican Church in Restoule. The next day she was expected tocook breakfast for the Nipissing Hotel guests. They ran the hotel for several years, before moving first to Lost Channel in Port Loring and finally settling in Hotham to run a saw mill. Hazel would cook for up to 20 members of the sawmill gang every work day of the summer and 5 or 6 of the logging crew in the winter. At the same time she was feeding her own family and would often serve dinner for up to 50 visiting relatives every Sunday. In the meantime she was milking the cows every day and picking 100's of quarts of berries in the summer which she cooked and canned. Awarded a Life Membership award by the Anglican Church Women of Restoule in 1996, Hazel always knit for church bazaars and cooked and baked for church dinners. Everyone in the family agreed that no-one could make cookies like Grandma Hazel. Hazel played the organ accompanied by Don on the violin for family hymn sings. 6521 | Hazel Isobel Ennis At her home inToronto on October 30,m died Hazel Isobel Ennis. She had enjoyed unusually good health all her life until a year ago when she first fell sick. She was the oldest daughter of George Wilson and his wife Caroline Ennis, and was born at Visalia California, on December15, 1983. Shortly after her birth her parents returned to Canada and she grew up on the Scotch Linewhere she attended the Central school and later Perth Collegiate Institute. In 1919 she married Martin Ennis and spent the rest of her life in Toronto. Her heart remained in the country where she grew up and her funeral took place in Perth and she was buried in the family plot beside her parents and her brother Samuel who had predeceased her by only three weeks. She had one daughter, Mary Isobel, Mrs Lorne Le Bar, now living in Montreal, and three grandchildren. Four sisters and two brothers survive her: Margaret (Mrs. Alfred Bowes); Caroline (Mrs Howard Barr); Mary (Mrs Anson Bowes); Agnes (Mrs Alfred Menzies); George Ear, for fifty years a professor at Dalhousie University, and James Arthur, long resident in Regina. Mrs Ennis was a very active member of All Saints Anglican Church and her old rector, Rev. Mr. Smyth, came to Perth to conduct her funeral service. He paid glowing tribute to her work and to her character, saying she combined the virtues of Mary and Martha and was a splendid example of her Presbyterian upbringing. To do her duty was her constant aim andin this she seldom failed. She was always a tower of strength in times of trouble but along with her charity she combined much shrewdness and common sense. She was an excellent business woman. Her pall bearers were Cecil and Ralph Dodds, Arthur and John Bowes, Alfred and George Menzies. 6527 | he death of Mrs. James Henderson which occurred on Thursday of last week takes away another Pocahontas county's pioneer settler to join the ranks of those who have gone before. She was a devout Christian, a kind neighbor and a loving wife and mother. The entire community joins in extending its sincere and heartfelt sympathy to the bereaved ones. The funeral was attended by a large concourse of sorrowing relatives and friends. Interment was in Powhatan Cemetery. Following is a sketch of her life as given us by Mr. Henderson. The deceased was born in Lanark County, Ontario, May 27, 1834. Her parents were Elizabeth Nairn Penman (1808-1851) and William Penman (1807-1885). She united which the Presbyterian Church in her youth and continues a faithful member of that church all her life. In 1861, she moved to the county of Perth, 400 miles west of her birthplace. She was married to James Henderson on September 15, 1863. Three children were born in Ontario. Elizabeth, who married S. L. Horsman; Catherine, who married L. N. Parradee; and George [married Blanche Voris Miller], all of whom reside in this vicinity. [Elizabeth & Catherine are twins.] In the Spring of 1866, the family moved to Pocahontas County, Iowa, settling in Powhatan township, and have made it their home since that time. Five children were born to them in Powhatan township, four sons and one daughter: William, John [married Ella Myra Harmon], James [married Eva May Harmon], Charles [married Myrtle H. Barrick], and Janet, who married Harry McFadzen. [Janet and John are twins.] She lived to see all grown to maturity and settled in homes of their own, seven of them married, one still single but has a home of his own, which was a great comfort to her. [William "Will" was single until one month after his mother died, he then married Edna Mae Meyers.] She has been a great sufferer for the past five years, but never complained, bearing it with patience and Christian fortitude. On the morning of January 8, 1903 she fell asleep in Jesus, to awake no more until the resurrection morn, when she will hear the welcome voice of her Lord, sayhing to her, "Well done, thou good and faithful servant. Thou has been faithful over a few things, I will make thee ruler over many things. Enter into the joy of thy Lord." She leave behind to mourn her departure a husband, five sons, three daughters, and nineteen grandchildren. | Penman, Beatrice (I13047)
