5714 FORMER RESIDENT DIES IN OREGON

Committal services are to be conducted here this week for Mrs. Margaret J. (McCauley) Holt, 82, of Grants Pass, Ore., former resident of Devils Lake, who died at Grants Pass last Wednesday.

Following funeral services at Grants Pass, the remains were returned to Devils Lake Wednesday afternoon, accompanied by her daughter, Mrs. Homer (Mary Louise) DeJanvier of Grants Pass. The remains are in the Gilbertson Funeral Home.

Mrs. Holt was born May 29, 1886, at Huron, Ontario, Canada. She came to Devils Lake from Jamestown in 1930, and moved to Grants Pass in 1950, where she has since resided.

Mrs. Margaret Holt

Graveside committal rites will be held at 4 p.m. Friday, in the Devils Lake Cemetery for Mrs. Margaret J. Holt, 82, Grants Pass, Ore., a former Devils Lake resident and widow of the late W. C. McCauley, former partner in the Lake Motor Service.

Mrs. Holt died in Grants Pass, where she had made her home the past several years.

Mrs. A. Swan, Reader of the First Church of Christ Scientist, will officiate. Gilbertson's Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Survivors include on daughter, Mrs. Homer (Mary Louise) DeJanvier, Grants Pass, here for the burial, and three grandchildren.

Margaret was the daughter of Andrew Hood and Ann Scott, born May 29, 1886. Her parents had already sold their farm in Howick Twp., Huron County, Ontario by the late 1800's. According to the Howick history book, by 1897, someone else already owned Andrew's farm. The farm was probably sold because none of Andrew Hood's sons showed any interest in running the farm. One wonders if any of the children ever regretted that decision. On the 1901 Canadian census, the Hood family is shown as living in the village of Wingham (Andrew, Ann and their youngest two children Stewart and Margaret). It was in Wingham where Stewart learned his trade. Margaret moved down to the United States (North Dakota) with her parents and brother, Stewart, in September 1902 when she was 16 years old.

At first Margaret lived in Devils Lake where her parents ran a boarding house, but after about a year the family moved to Jamestown, Stutsman County, North Dakota. It was here, that Margaret eventually met William McCauley, who she married in Brown County, South Dakota. A daughter, Mary Louise ("Mary Lou") was adopted by the couple. Mary Lou's birth date of December 4, 1926 was supposedly given to her to match that of her Uncle John, her mother's brother, who was born on December 4th.

Mary Lou once reminisced that her mother Margaret had had a few webbed toes, something that was quite common at that time when children were born in their homes. On Margaret's United States Petition for Naturalization, she lists her height as 5' 6 1/2", and her weight is 135 lbs.

William, Margaret and Mary Lou eventually moved from Jamestown, back to Devils Lake, where Margaret and William lived for many years until William's death. After William's death, Margaret stayed for a while with a cousin, Irene Butchard (McMorran line), at Clifford, Wellington County, Ontario, Canada, the region where Margaret had spent her childhood. The Butchard family was well known to Margaret. Irene's mother had been raised by Andrew Hood and Ann Scott, along with her sibling Rob, after the death of Ann's sister Louisa. Louisa's children had been given to different family members to help raise.

On October 12, 1950, Margaret married Anthony "Tony" Holt, originally of the Listowel, Perth County, Ontario area. Margaret had first met Tony when he was a boarder at her parent's boarding house in Devils Lake.

Tony and Margaret lived on the Holt family farm for a time in Ontario, but eventually moved to Grants Pass, Josephine County, Oregon. Tony had a son who was living in Grants Pass, and Margaret's daughter Mary Lou was in southern California working for the Civil Service.

Tony died on Feb. 28, 1967 and is buried in Grants Pass. Margaret died on September 3, 1968 and is buried with her first husband, William, at the Devils Lake Cemetery, space 7, Lot 13 of Block 8.

5727 Found Dead in Bed
Mrs. Wm. Burrows, of Holstein, was found dead in bed on Friday morning last. This was the cause of surprixe and regret in the community as no one had been expecting her death. In company with her daughter, Mrs. William Seaman, she attended prayer meeting at the Methodist church the previous evening and retired about her usual time. She lived alone but one of Mrs. Seaman's sons slept in the same house. On Friday morning the boy was a little later than usual in returning home and when he arrived there he announced that his grandmother was dead. She had been troubled with heart weakness and this undoubtedly caused her death.

Mrs. Burrows was a lady who was highly respected by all who knew her. She was a Christian in the truest sense and was a devoted Methodist. Her maiden name was Mary Case and she was born in West Flamboro', Ontario, on April 26th, 1828, being thus over seventy-one years old. She was married to the late William Burrows in 1848 and they moved to Holstein nine years later. Her husband did in August 1887, and the farm on which they had lived since becoming residents of Egremont was then sold. Mrs. Burrows retained a house on part of it, however, and lived there till her death.

They had thirteen children, the following ten of whom are living; Mrs Henry Tucker, Flesherton; Mrs. James Hunt, Riverview; Mrs W. Seaman, Holstein; Mrs R.O. Hoffman, Lumsden, NWT; Peter and Nelson, Lumsden, NWT; Marshal, Riverview; Jacob, Paisley; George, Conn.; John, Chicago.

Mrs. Burrows also leaves forty-six grand-children, and four great-grandchildren. Two of her brotheres, Daniel and Jacob Case, are living and conduct a general store at Glanford, Ont. There was a large attendance at the funeral on Sunday, services being conducted at the Methodist Church, Holstein, by Rev. J.W. Magwood. The following were pallbearers: Robert Mickleborough, John Thair, Thos. Brown, Nelson Main, William Main, Robert Burrows. Interment took place at Mount Forest.

5733 Four days after her departed husband, Sarah Miller, relict of the late Robert Gavin of Poland, Dalhousie, in her 66th year, deeply regretted by a large circle of female friends to whom she had been both a mother and a guardian, both in her official capacity and as a resspectful neighbour. There is something melancholy in the death of this aged couple, dying with 4 days of each other, both of the dropsy. Such a singular case scarcely ever occurs more than once in the course of a century. Down in yonder lonely graveyard amidst the surrounding snow, side by side, rises two little earthen mounds containing the mortal remains of this lamented couple. They journeyed through life together for nearly half a century and in death they were not divided. Miller, Sarah (I54169)

Miller, Francis Dixon (I4095)

5741 Francis M., son of Job and Elizabeth MILLER, was born in Greene County, near Owensburg, February 11, 1863, and died at his home on April 14, 1923, aged sixty years, two months and three days.

On November 27, 1888, he was united in marriage to Lottie GEE. To this union two sons were born?Roy and Rex. Little Rex and the mother passed to the Great Beyond.

About the year of 1892, he, with his remaining son, and his father and family, moved to Fairplay Township. Here he met Hattie M. KLINGER, and on September 4, 1895, they were united in marriage in Greene Co., Indiana. To this union one daughter?Golda?was born.

"Dick," as he was called by all his friends and neighbors, was a kind, good neighbor, ever ready to help those in need and ever ready to do a neighborly act of kindness.

For many years he cared for his aged parents, sometimes in his own home and at other times driving for miles to minister to their needs.

He was an industrious farmer, and gave up work only when compelled to on account of physical weakness.

In his last days of suffering, which covered more than a year, he was cared for by his faithful and loving wife and daughter. Day after day and week after week have they watched beside that bed of pain and done all that kind hands and loving hearts could do to relieve his suffering.

5747 Frank Virtue, born in Galena, Jo Daviess, IL, was the son of Minnie Elizabeth Virtue. Minnie surrended her child on 12 Apr 1923 to the Hillcrest Deaconess Home and Baby Fold in Dubuque, IA giving up all her parental rights. The president of the organization was Louise M. Hancock. The following year on 11 Mar 1924 Louise and her husband, Dr. John C. Hancock officially adopted baby Frank Virtue. His name was changed to Franklin Hancock. The Hancock's had no other children.

Franklin grew up in Dubuque, IA and attended the Washington Junior High School. After graduating from Washington JHS he was sent east in 1936 to attend the Phillips Exeter Academy in New Hampshire. Frank or Hank, as he was known to his classmates, excelled in academics and extracurricular activities. He was honor man, First group; Second group (2); Dramatic Association, Cast, Scenic Designer; Four-year club; Charter member, Midwestern Club; All-Club Soccer Team (3); All-Club Fencing Team; and his college preference was Harvard.

After graduating from Exeter in Jun 1940, Franklin entered Harvard University in Cambridge, MA. While in college, he participated for two years in the dramatic club. His degree interests were history and literature, and his intended war service was with the Army Air Corps (AAC). He followed through with the commitment when in May 1942 he volunteered for the AAC. Franklin was called to active service in February 1943. Along with other volunteers, Franklin was sent from Boston to Atlantic City, NJ where he enlisted on 26 Feb 1943. He was then sent to Michigan State College, Lansing MI possibly for some initial training. It is believed that Hancock began his service as an aviation cadet and earned his commission as a Second Lieutenant on 5 Feb 1944. His service for the next year is unknown, however, it is known that he left for foreign service about 10 Feb 1945. By Mar 1945, he was assigned to the Fifth Air Force, V Bomber Cmd, 308th Bombardment Wing, 38th Bombardment Group, 822nd Bombardment Squadron (M) that was stationed in the Philippines at that time. He flew his first combat mission against Luzon targets on 27 Mar 1945. His second and last combat mission was on 02 Apr 1945.

During the month of April 1945, the 822nd Squadron's mission was the neutralizing of Formosa Airdromes and towns and to provide ground support for US Infantry and Artillery units on Luzon where the squadron was stationed. On 2 April 1945, the squadron's mission was to engage targets of opportunity along the west coast of Formosa with the primary targets being railroad rolling stock. Six planes each from the 71st squadron and the 822nd squadrons were to take-off at 0600 with the formation rendezvousing with the fighter cover of eight P-47's at 0825 off the southern tip of Formosa. The route of attack was to follow the railroad north starting at Taichu. However, take-off was delayed until 1640. After take-off, the B-25s arrived at the rendezvous point and joined with the fighter cover. They proceeded to the target area turning into the land just north of Tainan. Several trains were sighted and attacked. Both were either severely damaged or destroyed. Lt. Shannon's three plane flight consisting of his plane and aircraft flown by Lts Neff* and Mahanah (sic) attacked a train at Sharoku. During their strafing attack the airplanes piloted by Lts Neff and Mahannah were seen to crash. One crashed and exploded 3 miles northwest of Taichu airdrome (prob. Lt Mahannah) and the other crashed in the water (prob Lt Neff) just off Gosei with no survivors seen from either plane. Estimates are that anti-aircraft fire from the sides of the railroad and from along the coast caused the loss of these two planes. Lt Mahannah's plane and crew remains were discovered after the war ended. Lt Neff's plane and the remains of all but one crewmember, Lt Franklin Hancock, were not recoverable. Neff's crew killed in action were 2Lt Whitney Blauvelt, 2Lt Franklin Hancock, TSGT Charles W. Miles, TSGT Roy L. Eaves, and SSGT Gordon S. Burns. Five were reported as missing in action. Second Lt Hancock was awarded (posthumously) the Purple Heart.

Recent (02 Oct 2017) information received via email from the American Battle Monuments Commission (ABMC) indicates that Lt Hancock's remains were recovered, and he was buried in Linwood Cemetery, Dubuque, IA. They also stated that they had no further information on his recovery. That explains why his name does not appear with the rest of his fellow crewmembers on the Tablets of the Missing, Manila American Cemetery and Memorial, Manila, Philippines.
