4858 | Fallbrook The funeral of the late Mrs. Mary Ashby was held on Friday from the home of her daughter, Mrs. Mather, and was largely attended.Interment was made at Playfair cemetery. Mrs Ashby had reached the age of 82 and was generally quite active until recently. The sympathy of the community is extended to the bereaved ones. The Perth Courier Perth, Ontario, Canada March 6, 1941, pg. 7 Mrs John Ashby There passed away in the Great War Memorial Hospital, Perth, on Wednesday morning, February 26, Mary Ann Clark, widow of the late John Ashby of Fallbrook. Deceased was an esteemed resident of the community of Fallbrook, where she was well and favorably known The late Mrs. Ashby was in her 83rd year. She was born in Brockville, a daughter of the late James Clark and Mary A. Gillespie. In 1883 she was united in marriage with John Ashby of Fallbrook, who predeceased her in 1926. Deceased was the mother of twelve children, four of whom died in early childhood. A daughter, Margaret, predeceased her in 1926; also a son, William, a Great War veteran, in 1923. Surviving members are: Robert on the homestead; Archie and Russel, in Alberta; Mrs John Lake, Glen Tay; Mrs. D.C. Nichols, Carleton Place, and Mrs. John Mather of Balderson, with whom the deceased lived after her health began to fail and she needed extra attention. Surviving also are one sister, Mrs. George Cavanagh of Vancouver; twenty-six grandchildren and nineteen great grandchildren. Mrs. Ashby was a member of St Peter's Anglican church at Fallbrook. The funeral which was largely attended, was held Friday, at 10:30, from the home of her daughter, Mrs. John Mather, Balderson, assisted by Rev. Mr Dickinson of the Balderson United Church. The pallbearers were three grandsons, Harry Mather, Lyle Nichols, Beverley Nichols, and three nephews, Arden Lake, Delbert Lake and John Ashby. The funeral tirbutes were very beautiful, and many expressions of sympaathy were received by the bereaved family. 4865 | Faribault Daily News Aug 1944 Funeral Services for Russell Whitson Were Held Tuesday Funeral services for the late Russell A. Whitson, who passed away Saturday, August 12, at the Northfield hospital, following a heart attack were held this afternoon at 2:00 o'clock at the home and 2:30 at the Methodist church with the Rev. Lo Roy H. Klaus officiating. Interment was at the Northfield cemetery. W. W. Gibson, Roy Parker, Earl Baker, C. E. Grimes, George La Pointe and George Larkin were pallbearers. Russel [sic] Alamond Whitson, son of John and Jane Lawson Whitson, was born December 25, 1872 at Cascade, Goodhue county. When five years old, he moved with his parents to Owatonna where they lived for six years and then they moved to Fergus Falls. While in Fergus Falls, his father died, and with his mother, the family came to Northfield when Mr. Whitson was 21 years old. Northfield has been his home ever since that time. He conducted a dray line in Northfield for 17 years and then he became a rural mail carrier for 33 years, 25 of which he worked out of the Northfield post office. He was delivering mail from the Dundas office when he retired seven years ago. Mr. Whitson was a member of the Odd Fellow and Degree of Honor Lodges and the Minnesota Rural Letter Carriers Association. Mr. Whitson married January 10, 1906 in Northfield to Sigrid Ann Grove, who preceded him in death. One daughter, Mrs. Kenneth Hamann (Edna) and one granddaughter, Sigred Ann Hamann, survive him, as do two brothers, William A. Whitson of Berthod, N.D. and Albert G. Perth Courier, July 3, 1891 The subject of the following obituary notice which is clipped from a Minneapolis newspaper lived on the Highland Line, Dalhousie, before moving west and will be remembered by a great many of the old settlers of that township: "Gordon?Died, at the home of his daughter Mrs. James Brownlee, Jo Davies Township on Saturday, 25th April, John Gordon, 93 years, 5 months. The funeral services were held at the house on Monday, Rev. W. O. Conrad officiating. The remains were taken to the Blue Earth City Cemetery for burial followed by a long procession. The deceased was born in Culron Scotland on the 26th Dec., 1797. In 1827 he came to America and settled at Dalhousie, Canada. There he married his wife Annie McKinnon. In 1856 he brought his wife and family to Fremont, Winona County, Minnesota. In September, 1857(?) he moved to Beaufort, Blue Earth County, where his wife died the following December. He then made his home with his son until 1863(?) when he came to live with his daughter with whom he died. He leaves five children, two sons and three daughters: James Gordon, Silverton Oregon; Mrs. James Brownlee, Jo Davies; Mrs. C. C. Hinckley, Winona, Minnesota; John Gordon, Polk County, Minnesota; Annie Gordon, Mapleton, Blue Earth County. Mr. Gordon was a member of the Presbyterian Church since before he left Scotland and was a firm believer in the atonement of Christ and the Second Advent. 4872 | Farmer Killed Near His Home A Bathurst farmer, Thomas R. Hossie, 79, died on Thursday afternoon, after the car which he was driving was struck by a CPR freight train about 2:15, at a level crossing on his farm property on the 3rd line of Bathurst. His autao, a 1956 model , was struck by a west-bound freight, and the impact hurled this vehicle about 30 feet into a ditch. Visability was good in both directions. Mr. Hossie was proceeding down a lane to his farm. Dr David Craig was summoned to the scene andMr Hossie was rremoved to the GWM Hospital by Blair and Son ambulance, where he passed away two hours later. The train crew were engineer George White and conductor Rod McGillis, both of Smiths Falls. The accident, the first train-car fatality in the district in several years, was investigated by Cpl. 4879 | Fatal Run to Fire Carleton Place Fire Chief Victim of Over-Exertion Carleton Place, Ont., January 12 -- The exertion of running from a local theatre to the fire station is believed to have been responsible for the death here during the night of William McIlguham, fire chief here for a number of years. He heard the fire siren while in the theatre and ran som 400 yards to the station, proceeding to the scene of the fire, which was a small blaze in a chimney. 4884 | Father Identifies Girl Who Fell From Monument on Island Port Clinton, July 30 William J. Lester of Hazel Park, Mich., has identified the body of the girl who plunged to her death last Friday from the top of the 352-foot Perry Memorial monument at Put-in Bay as his daughter, Betty, 18, Ottawa County Coroner George A. Poe ruled the death suicide. The father said Miss Lester had started for Cedar Point with her sister, Helene, 15, and a girl friend, but got off the boat at Put-in Bay without the knowledge of her companions. When the girls returned home they reported the disappearance of Betty and the father, without knowing of the deaty at the island, started for Put-in Bay where he learned what had occurred and he then came to Port Clinton and identified the body as that of his daughter.
