47754 Was christened Henry Harry.  He spent his boyhood in Bruce Cty on the 4th Con of Elderslie Twp. after his mother remarried McPherson.

John was 14 and Harry was 10 when his Mother moved to Bruce Cty.  as a young man, he earned his living clearing trees for farmers who had purchased forested property in the Chesley and Paisley areas of Bruce County in western Ontario.

They returned to the farm when young men and divided the land.  John lived on the farm and Harry purchased a small farm at the south end of the village. Harry later sold his share of the farm to John when he moved to Bathurst around 1903.

Ed MacPherson's obituary in the Calgary Albertan of 23 Jun 1937 states "In the fall of 1883 Ed McPherson, then a lad of 17, along with his half-brother (Harry Mather) and two other young men, went west and contracted the building of the CPR roadbed."  According to the Albertan, the grade they built is now the present site of Calgary.

When the work was finished on the railroad Harry Mather returned to Middleville and, according to the Perth Courier of 26 Mar 1886, he married and settled on the Stead farm near Middleville.

Harry later bought Long Bill Keay's (George Ennis') and wrote to JC asking if he wanted to farm.  JC farmed for a year and sold it to Allan Keays.

From Grandpa (John Cumming) Mather's recollections:
His father contracted on the western railroad, driving a team of horses pulling a scraper, to level the RR bed through western SK and Eastern AB.  Indians stole several teams of  horses.  He walked to Long Lake, MN to the home of John Mather who lived there because winter was setting in.  When he left to come home he was given two five dollar gold pieces for having worked.  They were given to  a 'Harry Mather' ( some connection to Georgia), who was named for his great? grandfather Mather. ( I haven't identified this individual at this time but it may be Harry Putnam Mather  (RIN 1193).

He spent his boyhood in Bruce Cty on the 4th Con of Elderslie Twp. after his mother remarried McPherson.

From Gordon Mather Verbal Recollection 3/29/2014
Henry's (Harry) Mather's team of horses were stolen by natives passing through the area and he and a MacPherson (or was it a Stead) trailed the horses which were shod south eventually losing the trail.  They ended up in Billings MT and decided to head for his uncle's in MN as winter was setting in.  They worked there and were paid in gold coins.  When Harry Mather from (Maryland, Georgia?) was borned he was named after (Henry, Harry) his uncle.

On a trip to Florida, Uncle Gord, Aunt Jean and Grandpa Mather (JC Mather) were passing through ? and Grandpa when stopped for the evening made contact and as a result the trio were invited for breakfast the next morning.  Grandpa, Uncle Gord and Aunt Jean were shown a gold coin, framed and mounted on the wall of his study by Harry Mather, one of Henry's gold coins.  Apparently Harry had made a trip north when a boy to meet his namesake and was given the remaining coin by Henry, Harry Mather.

Daniel Shaw Passes Away at Pembroke After a Long Illness
Mr Daniel Shaw, of Pembrooke, for many years a prominent businessman of Almonte, died on Wednesday in his 70th year. He had been ill for some time. He passed away at the Cottage Hospital, Pembroke. He was born at Lake Dore, near Eganville, where his father, a native of Aberdeen in Scotland, was a miller and also owned a mill at Beachburg. After leaving school Daniel went to Pembroke to learn the business of a hardware merchant and entered the employ of Dunlop and Company. He came to Almonte when quite young and entered business for himself, soon earning a reputation for keen business sense and integrity. He occupied the store which is still operated as a hardware business by Mr John Taylor. He was very enterprising and besides his hardware store, he owned a sawmill at Madawaska, was half owner with Mr J.B. Wylie in a woollen manufacturing mill in Almonte, and started a tile factory. After his wife's death over twelve years ago he gave up business and went to reside with a brother at Dauphin, Man. For the last six years he lived with his sister at Pembroke, Mrs Thomas Mackie. Mrs Shaw's maiden name was Margaret Baird. Her father was a farmer and her mother was a sister of the late Hon George Bryson. She died in 1910. The funeral took place on Thursday morning. A service was held at Pembroke by Rev Mr Blakely, the Presbyterian minister there, and the remains were conveyed to Almonte where interment was made in the Presbyterian cemetery on the eighth line of Ramsay. The pallbearers were: Messrs Alex Miller, P.J. Young, John Neilson, T.J. Reid, John Taylor and W. West. He leaves four brothers ? Alexander, at Grand Forks, North Dakota; James and Thomas, of Dauphin, Manitoba, and John of Lake Dore. He leaves one sister ? Mrs Thomas Mackie, of Pembroke. Col H.J. Mackie, now in Russia, former M.P. for North Renfrew is a nephew.

47782 Wedding Bells
As pretty a wedding as has been solemnized for some time took place in the Baptist church, Westport, on Wednessday evening of last week, the contracting parties being Mr. Peter Munroe, of Maberly, and Miss Annie Ritcvhie, daughter of Mr. John Ritchie, Sr., Althorpe. The bride who is one of Althorpe's fairest and most popular daughters, looked charming in a neat suit of cream satin brocade, trimmed with silk lace and pearls, with a hat to match. She was assisted by her neice, Miss Belle, who was attired in pink, trimmed with white silk lace and pearls, while Mr. Josie Munro, brother of the groom, ably performed the duties of groomsman. At 6:30 the young couple arrived at the church, which was beautifully decorated with evergreens and ferns, the alter being literally covered with flowers. They marched up the aisle to the sweet strains of Mendelssohn's wedding march, played by mrs. Derbyshire. The gordian knot was tied by the pastor, Rev. C.E. Harrel, after which the young couple accompanied by a large number of friends and showers of rice and good wishes left for the home of the bride's parents in Althorpe, where an elaborate supper awaited them. Only the immediate relatives of the contracting parties were present.  The young couple then left for their future home in Oso.

Althorpe thus loses one of her most charming young ladies, but she carries with her the sincerest good wishes of a host of friends. We heartily congratulate Mr. Munroe on his choice of a life partner, and wish the young couple a long and prosperous voyage on the matrimonial sea on which they have embarked.

47798 Wetheral, Cumberland
Historical Description
Wetheral, a village and a parish in Cumberland. The village stands on the river Eden, adjacent to the Newcastle and Carlisle railway, 4?b miles ESE of Carlisle, enjoys charming environs, has a post, money order, and telegraph office under Carlisle, and a railway station. The parish comprises Cotehill, Cumwhinton, Great Corby, Scotby, and Warwick Bridge. Acreage, 11,331 of land and 158 of water; population of the civil parish, 3272; of the ecclesiastical, with Warwick, 1369. There is a parish council of fifteen members. Corby Castle, originally a castellated edifice, but modernized with a Grecian front, is the seat of the Howards. A Benedictine priory, a cell to St Mary's of York, was founded a little SW of the village in 1088 by Ranulph de Meschines; was given at the dissolution to the Dean and Chapter of Carlisle, and is now represented by a Later English gateway, surmounted by an embattled tower. A railway viaduct of five arches, with roadway 90 feet above the surface of the water, and another bridge of seven arches, and 480 feet in length, span the thickly wooded Eden. Delightful walks lie along the river, above the village, and lead to three caves called Wetheral Safeguards or St Constantine's Cells, cut deeply in a precipice 40 feet above the water, which tradition says were occupied by this saint as a hermitage. A house, called the Folly, stands on a high site a little farther up the river, and commands a superb view. Red freestone and alabaster are worked. The living is a rectory, united with Warwick, in the diocese of Carlisle; net value, ?285 with residence. Patrons, the Dean and Chapter. The church, originally Norman, is now chiefly in the Perpendicular style, consisting of chancel, rebuilt in 1872, nave, N and S aisles, and tower. The nave was restored and the tower rebuilt in 1882.

Wetheral is a village, civil parish and electoral ward in Cumbria, England near Carlisle.

Wetheral stands high on a bank overlooking a gorge in the River Eden. Parts of the riverbank here are surrounded by ancient woodlands, including Wetheral Woods, owned by the National Trust. Formerly a small ferryboat operated to the village of Great Corby on the opposite bank, and an iron ring can still be found attached to the rocks on the Great Corby side of the river where the ferry would tie up.

The Newcastle to Carlisle Railway has a station here at the west end of Corby Bridge (popularly known as 'Wetheral Viaduct') over the Eden which acts also as a footbridge connecting with Great Corby. The station was closed during the Beeching cuts in 1967, but was reopened in 1981. In 1836 one of the very earliest railway accidents happened close to Wetheral station.

In the Middle Ages there was a priory at Wetheral. All that is left now is the gatehouse, which is in the care of English Heritage, and some low ruined walls behind the farm buildings that now occupy the site.

At the historic core of the village lies the village green, in one corner of which stands Wetheral Cross. The cross previously stood in the centre of the green before it was moved. The green is surrounded by large period houses in different styles.

Wetheral Parish Church is dedicated to the Holy Trinity and St Constantine. St Constantine was said to be a Scottish king who relinquished his throne to become a monk. Legend has it that he lived as a hermit in a cave at Wetheral.

47799 When Boyd Caldwell tried to force another drive through the McLaren works in the spring of 1880, Peter McLaren sought an injunction against Boyd Caldwell." The judicial decisions 'ping ponged' between for and against Caldwell/McLaren. Caldwell moved on to the political front. Caldwell was successful in obtaining rapid legislative action via his hephew, William  C. Caldwell, a member of Mowat's Liberal Pary representing South Lanark County. Although McLaren's father-in-law, William Lees, was also a member of the legislature, he was a member of the opposition Conservative Party.
McLaren protested the low toll rates proscribed by the bill and turned to the Federal government of Sir John A. Macdonald who promptly overturned the Ontario Provincial legislation. The two levels of government battled for control through 1882-1883.

In 1882, Caldwell's men cut through McLaren dams blocking a drive at the foot of Long Lake and brought 10,000 logs down river to Carleton Place in 1883.

McLaren took his case to the Supreme Court of Canada who, on 28 November 1882, ruled in his favour.

Caldwell took his case to the highest of all courts, the Judicial Committee of the Privy Council in Britian which ruled in 1884 that all waterways were open to all, although private interests could charge a reasonable amount for the use of any improvements leading to the 'Rivers and Streams Act'.

47800 When he died, he left extensive property in Port Glasgow, particularly the lands and villa of Highholm, but also other properties in the town. The former of these were left by entail, devolving on his son James. The rest were placed in the lands of trustees for the benefit of his other issue. Anderson, James (I37806)
