47726 | Walsh County Record, Grafton, North Dakota, Wednesday, April 19, 1899 Death of Mrs. R. Weagant Mrs. R. Weagant quietly passed away Thursday morning, April 13, at 6 o'clock; aged 65 years; the immediate cause of her death being paralysis of the bowels. Mrs. Weagant's maiden name was Mary Miller, she was born in the month of May 1834, in the county of Lanack (sic), Canada. In the spring of 1857 she was married to R. Weagant. The same year Mr. Weagant came to Minnesota ande settled in Wabasha county and the year after Mrs. Weagant followed. In 1878 they moved to Cass county and from there came to Grafton in 1882. Mrs. Weagant was the mother of ten children, seven of whom survive her; all were present at the funeral with the exception of the youngest, Charles, who is serving his country in the Philippines. Mrs. Weagant was a noble Christian woman; her many good qualities had drawn around her a large circle of warm friends, who extend heartfeelt sympathy to the bereaved husband and children in their sorrow. One of Mrs. Weagant's last conscious acts was to read a letter from her son, Charlie, written in the Philippines; she expressed herself as being bery glad to hear from him, but shortly after began to fail; this was on Tuesday and death occurred as stated above on early Thursday morning. The funeral was held from the Presbyterian church and was largely attended. The casket was literally covered with beautiful wreaths of flowers, silent tokens of sympathy and esteem of friens. Rev. Dr. McDonald preached an appropriate funeral sermon; he referred to the deceased's true Christian life, she had been a member of the Presbyerian church for seventeen years, being among the first to join; and although for the past few years, owing to ill health, she was unable to attend, her good influence and sympathies were there. Rev. Mr. Newcomb assisted Dr. MacDonald in conducting the services. The singing was beautiful and appropriate. Mrs. Robert Miller of Minneapolis attended the funeral of her sister Mrs. R. Weageant; Herman Weagant was here from St. Hiliare, and Mrs Mary McJannett and Miss Lizzie Weagant came from Minot and Mr and Mrs Will Weagant from Cavalier. Miss Lizzie Weagant will remain at home. | Miller, Mary (I88)

47728 | Walter George Brown was the son of Charles Brown and Christina White. Wikipedia: Walter George Brown (September 6, 1875 ? April 1, 1940) was a Presbyterian Church in Canada minister who opposed the formation of the United Church of Canada and was a United Reform Movement MP in the Canadian House of Commons. Born in Athelstan (now Hichinbrooke), Huntingdon County, Quebec of Scots-Irish parents, Brown was educated at McGill University where he received an Honours B.A. Degree in 1899 and at The Presbyterian College, Montreal, where he graduated in 1902 with a B.D. degree, the Silver Medal, a $60.00 Theological Scholarship, and a prize ($10.00 in books) in public speaking. He also won other scholarships and prizes during his time at Presbyterian College. During his summers, he went into the newly opened lumbering camps of Northern Ontario, serving first as a student missionary, was ordained on 30 September 1902 as an Ordained Missionary to Canada Atlantic Lumber Camps, from Rainy Lake to Whitney under the North Bay Presbytery. He remained in this post until July 1903, when he moved west to work amongst miners in the West Kootenay area of British Columbia at Salmo, New Denver and Silverton, all in proximity of Nelson. While serving in ministry in British Columbia, he earned his M.A. degree from McGill, with a paper titled "History and Philosophy of Socialism", and was married to Martha Rowat of Athelstan, Quebec; her father, Andrew Rowat (1839-1918) served as minister at Elgin and Athelstan from 1884 - 1909; her mother, Margaret, was the daughter of Donald MacKenzie pioneer minister in Zorra Township, Oxford County, Ontario. After leaving the Kootenays to study in Montreal and at the United Free Church of Scotland College in Glasgow, he was called and inducted in March 1908, as minister of Knox Presbyterian Church in Red Deer, Alberta, and would remain there until 1925. He also served as convenor of Home Missions for the Red Deer Presbytery supervising three congregations and fifteen missions. He served as Moderator of the Synod of Alberta in 1915. At the 1925 General Assembly, Brown was one of 79 Commissioners who refused to join the United Church, and met in a corner of Toronto's College Street United Church at the conclusion on June 9 in order to resume business later that night at nearby Knox Presbyterian Church and legally claim their continuity. rown left Red Deer later that year to oversee the re-organization of some Presbyterians in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan that had voted against joining the United Church. St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church, Saskatoon was formed under his pastoral leadership, and remains the largest PCC congregation within the province. In June 1931, he was elected Moderator of the Presbyterian General Assembly, and during his Moderatorial year, travelled to Asia, and visited Korea, Japan, Taiwan, and the Manchuria portion of China. Reverend Walter George Brown is one of the few Moderators of the Presbyterian Church who was or is not a Reverend Doctor; he refused to accept Honorary Doctorates from his Alma Mater, nor Toronto's Knox College. His funeral took place in Ottawa, and is buried at the Athelstan Presbyterian Cemetery. | Brown, Walter George (I51517)

47737 | Walter Thomas Couper, widely known leader in law, business and political circles, died suddenly at his home on Chesnut Street, June 1, 1934. He was 64 years old. Mr. Couper was the victim of a sudden heart attack. While he had not been in good health for the last 18 months and had slowly been withdrawing from more strenuous activities in Republican politics and business, it was not known that his heart was seriously affected. Death came suddenly in a room on the second floor of his home as he was preparing to leave for New York City to bring back a son, Frederic, who has been undergoing treatment for injuries suffered while the young man was a member of the Binghamton Central High Football team in 1928. The Couper family had planned to go early next week to the commencement at Elmira College where their daughter, Mary, is an honor member of the graduating class. Ruth Couper heard her husband fall as he passed from one room to another on the second floor and rushed to his side but he already was dead. Walter Couper was prominent in the affairs of the Binghamton Chamber of Commerce, the Central YMCA and the Broome County Bar Association. He was widely known in the Republican Party having been assistant corporation counsel in 1917 and having served as Supervisor from the Third Ward for 14 years prior to his retirement on January 1, 1934. He was born in Morristown, St. Lawrence County on April 13, 1870, the son of Joseph P. Couper and Hannah Wilson Couper. He attended the Ogdensburg Academy and graduated in 1888. He then attended and graduated from Hamilton College in 1892 with a Bachelor of Arts degree and the following year receiving a Master of Arts degree. He completed his course in law at the University of Minnesota and received his Bachelor of Laws in 1905 and was admitted to practice law in that state the same year. Walter came to Binghamton in 1908 and was associated with W. J. & F. W. Welsh, one of the leading law firms in the area. He continued with the firm until 1915 when he became a partner. It was then known as Welsh and Couper. Eventually through business partner changes, the firm became Couper, Terry and Turnbull. He was counsel for the Binghamton Savings Bank and associate counsel for the City National Bank of Binghamton. Walter had held at various times the chairmanship of every important committee on the Board of Supervisors and it was his record of strength and ability in this connection that made him regarded as a key man in this group. He brought into his service information acquired during years of teaching for four years at Hamilton College after his graduation and as principal of the Boonville High School for five years. Later he served at the head of the department of history in the East High School of Minneapolis MN, while fitting himself for his law career by night study at the University of Minnesota. He was a member of the American Bar Association, New York State Bar Association and Broome County Bar Association. He also belonged to the University Club, Delta Kappa Epsilon, Phi Beta Kappa, Honorary Scholarship Society and Delta Chi. Survivors include his wife, Ruth Delia Williams Couper; daughters Rachel Williams Couper and Mary Williams Couper; sons, Edgar Williams Couper and Frederic Maxwell Couper; sister, Mrs. J. B. Witherhead, Morristown and a brother, Edgar J. Couper of Minneapolis, MN. Funeral service was held and interment followed in the Couper plot of the Chenango Valley Cemetery, Binghamton, NY. | Couper, Walter Thomas (I6732)
