4785 | Event Type: LifeSketch Description: 1881, Friday September 16, The Almonte Gazette page 3 Death Of An Old Settler We are called upon this week to chronicle the death of one of the pioneer settlers of Lanark County ? of whom but a few are now living ? in the person of Mrs Wm Paul, sr., of the 7th line Ramsay. The sad event took place on Friday last, and, although not unexpected, the news of her death was received with sorrow by a large circle of friends. The funeral took place on Monday, and the large number who followed her remains to the grave showed the universal esteem and respect in which she was held by the community. Deceased was one of the very earliest settlers in Ramsay having with her husband, emigrated from Glasgow, Scotland ? their native place ? in the year 1821 ? sixty years ago ? and settled in Ramsay the same year, and on the farm on which she resided continuously until her death. She attained ripe old age of 84 years, and for the past 26 years had been an invalid, caused by a severe attack of rheumatic fever ? an affliction which was borne with exemplary patience and resignation. Although physically disabled she was strong intellectually, at it was always a pleasure to her to relate her experiences in the early years of her life in Ramsay ? a time when Almonte had no existence, and when Lanark County was almost a trackless forest. Few can imagine the hardships endured or the obstacles which had to be overcome by the settlers at that time, and the present generation should not forget that they have these hardy pioneers to thank for paving the way to the fertile farms and prosperous villages which are to be seen throughout the country, Thus one by one they are passing away until at present but a very few remain; and are leaving behind them example of industry energy and perseverance which will not soon be forgotten. 4788 | Event Type: LifeSketch Description: Please look at the original of the birth record of son, Albert Edward Small. The brother of David Small, Charles Henry Small, was attesting to the birth of Albert. (Delayed birth record) The name of the father, David Small, was first written in as Charles David Small and then there was an attempt to erase the Charles and the David Small was in Bold. Then the word father was erased and brother was written over it. The name Charles, is actually for Charles Henry Small, the brother of David Small. All other documents list his name as David Small. Charles Henry Small also attested to the birth of several children for David Small, always stating that he was the brother of David Small and witnessed the births of his children. 4789 | Event Type: LifeSketch Description: The first oil well in Lambton was discovered on their farm. William was bought out by the Oil Company, and became Manager of Works. The first oil discoveries were made at "The Springs" near Petrolia in 1861. In 1862 more oil was found by drilling. At that time the homes of most people were lighted by candles and the wealthy used whale oil, at a dollar a gallon. In 1854 a Nova Scotian Dr. Abraham Gesner had invented kerosene that was a cheaper fuel for lighting. Petrolia was where the inter-continental oil refining empire began. In 1866 oil was located in the swampy woods west of Petrolia and a host of wells were drilled. At first the oil had been hauled to Wyoming that was on the main railway line but a spur line was built to Petrolia and the town began a boom. Date: Place: | Elliott, William (I64958)
