47305 The Eaglesham lands were already heavily burdened with bonds, the first of which had been granted by his father in 1898. In1917 his father died, and he inherited the Polnoon lands as well. These too were heavily burdened, and his father seems to have left considerable debts. He had to pass the Polnoon lands to his father's trustees, who disburdened them, and sold them oon to William Douglas Weir, BaronWeir of Eastwood and Jame George Weir, who in 1933 passed them on to the Polnoon Estate Company, which was probably in their control. Even this was only delaying financial disaster for the Gilmours, but for the next few years Angus had other things on his mind. Gilmour, Major Angus Cecil (I38089)

47306 The earliest documentary evidence about the house in Abbey Street is in a lease of 1691, which was granted by the Dean and Chapter of Carlisle to Thomas Tullie, their colleague, who at that time was Chancellor of Carlisle, and who later became Dean.
By the terms of the lease Thomas Tullie acquired a gardenin 'Abbey Gate", as the street was then known. This reference to the house would accord well with the date still to be seen on the leaden fall-pipes on the garden elevation of the house (1689).

47307 The earliest recorded birth in Kenmore, Perthshire is 19 Jun 1636 (Donald son of Alexander McAllester.)

The most likely possibilities might be that he is the son of John McAllaster and was born in either Inverness or St Cuthbert's parish and his mother was Isobell (several last names uses).

Alternatively he may be the son of Jon. (Jonathan?) McAlister and Chris. Allasoun and would have been born in Inverness or Glasgow.

This is probably a case of missing records.

47309 The Edmonton Milling Company is also significant because of its association with Robert Ritchie who arrived in Strathcona in 1892. Within a year he had built and began operating the flour mill and added elevators in 1895 and 1905. Ritchie also served in local politics as alderman, school trustee, justice of the peace and in 1906 as mayor of Strathcona. The Edmonton Milling Company is also significant as a prominent visual landmark on the south edge of the North Saskatchewan River Valley. Its tall profile was readily visible from Edmonton across the river valley and as a landmark signified the end of the Calgary and Edmonton railway line in Strathcona.

47321 The following information for this memorial page was taken from birth, marriage, death, and census records. Also the granddaughter of Katherine, Marjorie Woods provided family stories and pictures of the Fox and Bass family. Researcher Susan Garske Sylvester

Katherine Fox was born in March of 1874 in Leeds and Greenville North in south Elmsley. She was the last born child of 5 children in the union of Charles Fox and Janette Belonger Fox. She also had a half brother from a previous marriage of Charles Fox. When Katherine was only 3 years old her mother Janette died on March 11, 1877. This left Charles Fox with a family of 5 children under the age of 9. He did the same thing he did when his first wife died. He could not take care of the children so he placed them with various families in the area.

Granddaughter Marjorie Woods relates the family story: "Both Katherine and her sister Annie were placed in the home of the James Patterson family. They had to work on their farm when they were very young. They cooked the meals and did the household chores. His wife, Sally Patterson was in poor health and confined to her bed much of the time. The girls missed many days of school because of their duties."

Location of Katherine Fox:

In 1881 in the Canadian Census Record: Francis Denna was 55 years of age and born in 1826. His birthplace was Quebec and he was Catholic. His occupation was a Cooper. (Charles Fox had also been a cooper.) They were living in District 107 Leeds and Grenville North. They were in Sub district B in Elmsley. His wife was Sharlet ( her maiden name was Lombar.) She was born in 1833 in Ontario. Her nationality was French and she was a Methodist. They have four children listed: Charles who was 25, Frank who was 22, Margaret Ann who was 19 and Julia Denna who was 16 years of age. Their children were Wesleyan Methodists. Living with them was Katherine Fox at 7 years of age. She was born in Ontario, was a Methodist, and of Irish nationality. Katherine was spelled Catherine on this census.

On the same page of the census record was her sister Anne Fox and she was living with the James Patterson family. In what year Katherine was placed with the Denna's or how long she lived with them is not known. There were family ties with the Denna family. Sharlet (Charlotte) Denna was a Lombar. She was the daughter of Francis Lombard who in his second marriage had married Ann Finlayson. Ann was Janette Belonger's grandmother and Katherine Fox's great- grandmother. Charles had placed her with family.

In the 1891 Census Katie Fox was now living with the Patterson family. Her birth date was 1874 and she was born in Ontario. She was 17 years old. Her religion was Methodist. Her parents were listed as born in Ontario. She was residing in District 85 Leeds and Grenville North and in Sub district Elmsley South. She was living with James and Sally Patterson. Her sister Anne was living with this family in the 1881 census. He was 49 years old and Sally was 41. James was born in Scotland and immigrated to Canada in 1864. Sally was born in Ontario but her father was from Scotland. James and Sally list their religion as Methodist. Besides Katie Fox living with them, there was Archie Martin 12 years old and John Murphy who was 14 years old. The most interesting fact about this family unit is that James and Sally have adopted all three children. While Katie still retains the Fox name, the records show the Pattersons adopt her.

Marjorie's family story rings true and Katherine Fox joined Anne and lived at the Patterson farm for a number of years. If you follow the later Patterson census records, they continue to have young unrelated children living with them on their farm.

Five years later Katherine Fox will marry Richard Bass in 1896.

Marriage record of 1896: The record was in Chesterville in the County of Dundus. Richard was 32 years old and was living in Lombardy. His place of birth was South Crosby and he was listed as a farmer and a bachelor. His parents were Joseph and Eliza Bass. Kate Emma Fox was 21 years old. She was living in Lombardy. Her place of birth was South Burgess. Her parents were Charles and Janette Fox. They were married in Chesterville. Their religion was Wesleyan Methodist. They were married by F. H. Sprole.

In the 1911 Canada Census Richard W. Bass was 47 years of age. His wife Katie E. was 37 years old. At this time, They had 3 children: Evaline (Evelyn) Bass who was 13 years old, Austin E. Bass who was 9 years old, and Hazel L. Bass who was 7 years old. They were living in Ontario, District Leeds, District #91, Sub District: Elmsley South Township, Lombardy Village, Sub district #8 and the place of habitation was Elmsley Tp.

According to Marjorie Woods who has a family tree on the whole Bass family, "Her grandfather Richard or Dick Bass was a very stern man. The grandchildren were warned to be on their best behavior when visiting. No hired man would stay with him very long, even though they appreciated my grandmother's cooking. His son Austin Bass left home at age 19 and went to the United States. My brother Gerald began to work for our grandfather when he was in his teens. He seemed to get along well with him."

On December 28 1952 Katherine Fox died in Lombardy, Leeds, Ontario. Marjorie Woods provided her grandmother's obituary.

Katherine Bass

A well-known resident of the Lombardy district, Mrs. Richard W. Bass died on Sunday, December 28, 1952.

The former Katharine A. Fox, she was the youngest daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Charles Fox, of South Burgess. Her great-grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Finlayson, emigrated from Scotland in the 18th century and settled in Bathurst, near Perth.

In 1896 she was married to Richard William Bass and they spent their entire married life on the farm near Lombardy. Mrs. Bass was a woman of sterling qualities, always ready to offer a helping hand. Her chief interests were her church and family. She was an active member of Lombardy United Church, assisting in the choir and Sunday school for many years. For 11 years she was a member of the Women's Association. She leaves to mourn her loss, one son Austin E. Bass, Som-...Mass., two daughters, Mrs. Fred Weekes (Evelyn) and Mrs. Hazel Dodds, of Perth; Six grandchildren, Gerald Weekes, Mrs. Ian Woods, Robert A. Bass, and Elmer, Claire, and Lyle Dodds, and one sister, Mrs. A. Leach, of Orillia.

The funeral service was held at Lombardy United Church on Wednesday, December 31, and was conducted by Rev. W. R. Alp. of Perth, assisted by A. Calder, of Rideau Ferry. The testament to the esteem in which Mrs. Bass was held... hymns were sung and a solo "Near to the Heart of God' was rendered by Mrs. John Dalgleish. Many beautiful floral tributes were received. Interment was the public cemetery, Lombardy. The pallbearers were Mervin Clovell of Carleton Place: William J. McSpadden, John Dalgleish,Ross Miller, Donald Moodie and Ormand Joynt of Lombardy.

Final note:
On her headstone was the "A" for her middle name. I could not find her birth record but her marriage record and the Census Record of 1911 had her middle name as Emma. The marriage record for her daughter Hazel recorded her middle name as Agnes.

"In 1874, she experienced religion under the pastoral labors of Rev. N. A. Trowbridge and united with the Methodist church, of which she has ever since been a worth member, and was a faithful attendant upon church duties until infirmities prevented. She has been in ill health for some time, but not seriously sick only about two weeks.

"She was always a gentle and kind mother is the testimony of her children, and her Christian influence has been a help to them, and she gave as little trouble as possible. She will long be remembered by her afflicted family. The funeral was held in the Methodist church, on Wednesday, and an appropriate discourse preached by the pastor. The casket, covered by beautiful floral tributes, was then borne to cemetery. Our sympathies are with her bereaved family and may they emulate her excellent example."

47326 The funeral of the late Mrs. Thomas Moodie, whose death occurred on Monday, 6 November, took place on the following Wednesday, her remains being interred in Elmwood Cemetery, were followed to their last resting place on earth by numerous relatives and a large concourse of friends who were anxious to pay a last but sad tribute of respect to her memory. The mournful cortege of hearse and about 30 conveyances left from the late residence of the deceased about 1:00 pm. Her minister, Rev. Dr. Bain, conducted services at the house before the corpse was lifted and was at the grave also before interment. Mrs. Moodie was the eldest daughter of the late Andrew and present Mrs. Sym of the Scotch Line and was cut off in the springtime of life, being only 33 years old at the time of her demise. She had been ill for about a week previous and an idea had been entertained that convalescence was apparent and that she would again return to her usual health but an all wise Providence decreed it otherwise. She was a zealous member of St. Andrew's Church, Perth, and was always ready to help in any effort for its advance. She also for some years previous to her marriage was a Sabbath School teacher in connection with the same church and her amiable disposition could not fail to secure the esteem and affection of the children under her care. She was a kind mother, a dutiful and affectionate wife and her husband has our great heartfelt sympathy in his bereavement.

Sad homes at Christmas - Four Funerals in Town in Three Days, and Others in Neighboring Townships
A Double Bereavement - A Great-Great-Grandparent's Death

While the remains of Mrs. Templeton, jr., were lying in the house on Friday morning (the two families both live under the same roof) were shocked when a member of the household made the solemn announcement that Mrs. James Templeton, sen., had also passed to her reward. The venerable lady quietly fell into the sleep from which there is no waking, and the members of the family for a time could scareely realize the fact that the grim messenger had again served his fatal summons in their dwelling. Extreme age and the excitement consequent on  her daughter-in-law's illness and demise are given as the cause of the old lady's death.

The late Mrs. Templeton was born in Kilmarnock, Ayrshire, Scotland, Dec. 29, 1904, and was within a few days of being 89 years of age when called away. Her maiden name was Agnes Lindsay. Mr. and mrs. Templeton were united in marriage in Scotland over seventy years ago, and during that unusually long period of wedded life were greatly attached to each other. They came to Canada in 1842, settling in Ramsay that same year, and they have lived continuously in Ramsay and Almonte ever since. Eight children were born to them, seven of whom survived, viz.: Mrs. James Gilmour, Mrs A.A. Gilmour, Mrs. Wm. Young and Jas. Templeton, of this town; Mrs. McKillop of Beachburg: Mrs D. Ledgerwood, of Arnprior; and Wm. Templeton, of Emerson, Manitoba. There are about 125 grandchildren and great grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild - the son of Mr. Wm. Young, of Perth.

Deceased had always been in good health, and able to attend to her household duties up to the ever of her death. The funeral took place on Sunday afternoon, when a very large cortege followed the remains to their resting place in the eighth line cemetery. Among those who attended were many of the oldest settlers in the neighbourhood. The sympathy of all is with the patriarchal husband in the great loss which he has sustained, and which he feels most keenly.

47339 The history, relayed to two grand daughters (married to unrelated McLeans in Bruce County) is that Neil Munro was married and settled in Scotland at the time his father, Peter Munro and the rest of the family came to Canada in 1820. Neil was a cobbler (or boot maker) by trade, in the old country, and came to Canada thirty six years after his father left Scotland which would be two years after his father died.
The reason advanced for Neil Munro coming to Canada in 1856 was the fact that the bank in which he had deposited his savings met with financial difficulties with the result he lost approximately ?1000.

From Findagrave:
According to the 1861 census (Canadian) Neil & family were living on lot 12 concession 3 in a one story cabin with their four sons. They emmigrated from Lockfineside,Argylshire, Scotland around 1855 and came to Southwold, Elgin County for two years. They then moved to Bruce township in Bruce county Ontario where the family has remained for 130 years.

Excerpts from John McCallum's research (2007): John Munro and Ann (McCallum) Munro, and thier family resided in Lochfineside in the parish of Glassary, near the village of Inverae, (today renamed Minard). They were probably crofters, living along the shores of Loch Fyne, who augmented thier living by herring fishing in the loch. Glassary ( later Kilmichael-Glassary) lies in the area between the Cound of Jura and Loch Fyne and Glenary, on the south by Loch Fyne and South Knapsdale, on the west by knapsdale and the village of Kilmartin, and on the north by Loch fyne and Davalich. (Information from Doug Wrightson, as provided by Doreen Guerriero) It is probable that John Munro - MUCXXX901, and Duncan Munro - MUBXXX901, were brothers. Both married one year apart, and were both listed as being from "Criggans", which is believed to be Creggins, locatated just north of Strachur, on the east bank of Loch Fyne.

47342 The Irish papers contain an account of the gigantic harest home on the estate of Mr. Pollock, in the county of Galway. About 1400 persons (only one-half of his servants) were liberally entertained in the Home Farm Steading at Lismay. The roof covers nearly two acres of land, and the building was lighted with gas. The extent of this gentleman's operations may be judged by the fact that he has 1800 acres of green crops, and 4000 in grain, with about 4000 head of cattle.

He was the first son of Duncan Park and Mary Whyte McIntosh, and was an older brother to my grandmother Effie Park, who married Rae Salkeld of Gerald. Joe moved with his father Duncan to the Fleming, Saskatchewan area in 1900. He worked with his father for a while but later purchased a farm of his own 1 mile south of Fleming. He was a horse trader and cattle buyer in the area for many years. but became ill and he was taken to at first to Reston, Manitoba...and later to Esterhazy, Saskatchewan as Effie and Rae, lived in that area. It was said that he suffered from Asthma, but actually passed away of cancer in 1945. One of his sisters was Ellen Park Taylor who is also buried in Fleming Cemetery also his Aunt Jane his father's sister is also buried in that cemetery. DEVILS LAKE DAILY JOURNAL

Sept. 5, 1924

ANDREW HOOD DIES TODAY

Andrew Hood, aged 87 years, died at six forty-five this morning at the home of his daughter, Mrs. J. Halliday. Mr. Hood was formerly of Lanark, Ontario, but has been in this country for a good many years and for the past four years, with Mrs. Hood, has been making his home with Mr. and Mrs. Halliday at 515 Sixth Street.

Funeral services will be held at the house tomorrow afternoon at two-thirty, Rev. Sam M. Kelly officiating, and the body will be shipped to Harrison, Ontario for internment.

Mr. Hood is survived by his widow, Mrs. Anna Hood, and six children: Mrs. J. Halliday, Devils Lake; R. G. Hood, Medicine Hat, Alberta; J. S. Hood, Lengby, Minn; Stewart Hood, Toronto, Ontario; and Martha and Margaret Hood of Jamestown, ND. Also, a nephew, R. S. McMorran of Lawton, who lived at the Hood home from childhood.

Mrs. Hood with four of the children and Mr. McMorran were with him at death, and R. G. Hood is on his way to Devils Lake. Mr. Stewart Hood will meet the body at Harrison, Ontario.

Andrew Hood was born in Dalhousie Township (now called Lanark Highlands), Lanark County, Ontario on November 15, 1837 to William Hood and Martha Park. Andrew was the seventh child of ten. Andrew's older brother, William, eventually left their childhood home, stopping (per William Jr.'s diary) at Simcoe County to visit his grandfather James Hood, and then his older sister Elizabeth Jones (Hood) Ferguson at Hay Township, Huron County, before settling in Howick Township, Huron County. All of William's brothers eventually traveled to Howick Township, but most moved on. Andrew must have liked what he saw, because he farmed in that area for many decades. The current address of where the farm was located is: 46358 Salem Road, Howick Township (near Clifford). The old homestead is no longer there, and a new house replaces it, but the land can be viewed and there is an old maple sugar shack on the property. This land would have been all virgin forests/bush with Andrew first bought it. The two brothers had farms that were about 2 1/2 miles from each other. Andrew married Ann Scott on January 5, 1866 at Willow Creek Farm. Ann's parents had come from Hawick, Roxburghshire, Scotland. Andrew's farm was near the border of Minto Township, Wellington County, where Ann's parents had a farm. Andrew and Ann had seven children, plus helped raise two children whose mother (Louisa Scott McMorran who was Ann's older sister) had died unexpectedly.

A nephew of Ann Scott Hood, Robert "Rob" Scott McMorran, was one of the chidlren raised by the Hood family. Robert's mother, Louisa (Ann's sister), died before her time, when Robert was around 13 months old, and after that, he lived with the Andrew Hood family. Robert was born on March 25, 1874 at Hespler, Ontario. He died Nov. 17, 1953 in Lawton, ND. Robert is buried at Inkster Cemetery. One of Rob's sisters was also raised in the Andrew Hood family, but she married and stayed in Ontario.

On the 1871 Canadian Census, Andrew is listed as living in Huron County, Howick Twp. Andrew is age 33 and his wife Ann is 24. Their children are William (age 4), Ann (age 2), and John (4 months born Dec. 1870). Andrew was the owner of 109 acres of land on Concession 13, Lot 33 of Howick Township. The land produced 160 bushels of Spring Wheat, 60 bushels of barley, 240 bushels oats, 100 b. peas, 80 b. potatoes, 400 b. turnips, and 10 tons of hay. There were 2 oxen, 2 milk cows, 2 beef cattle, 10 sheep, 1 swine, 1ith 1 cow, 2 sheep and 5 swine butchered. They made 50 lbs. of butter from the cow's milk, and 24 lbs. of wool from the sheep.

On the 1900 U.S. census, Cass County, Kinyon Twp, it lists their son John Hood as having come to the U.S. in 1896. He is living with his sister Annie, his brother-in-law Jake, and his brother George. His sister Martha Park is living next door. Per that census, everyone else in the group came to the U.S. in 1899. They must have liked what they saw in North Dakota, sending back word to their parents in Canada. In 1902, when Andrew and Ann's youngest daughter Margaret Janet was sixteen, the rest of the family left Canada and moved to Devil's Lake, Ramsey Couty, North Dakota, where they ran a boarding house for about one year. After that, the couple relocated to Jamestown, Stutsman County, North Dakota. Andrew and Ann lived the rest of their lives in North Dakota, but are buried per their request, at Harriston Cemetery, Minto Township, Wellington County, Ontario.
