47211 Sudden Death
We regret very much to hear of the sudden death of Mrs. James Cameron, at her residence on the Scotch Line, on the evening of the 24th. On the day in question, Mrs. Cameron had been complaining of being slightly indisposed, but presently the indisposition assumed a more serious aspect when a message was at onece dispatched to Perth, for a physician, but the summons had been but a few minutes on the road, when Mrs. Cameron was called away by death. Heart disease was the cause of her sudden demise. Mrs. Cameron's death will be mourned by a larg number of friends, and the bereaved husband and family will receive the hearty sympathu of the entire community. The deceased was the daughter of John Fisher, Esq., of Bathurst and was about 37 years of age.

47221 Superintendent of the toronto insane asylum from 1854 - 1875 responsible for cleaning up the "hell hole" Dr. Joseph Workman (May 26, 1805-April 15, 1894), known as the "Father of Canadian Psychiatry," was in 1845 the principal founder of the First Unitarian Congregation of Toronto. He largely wrote the church's constitution which affirms "the free exercise of private judgment in all matters of belief" and provides that "females" were to "exercise the same privileges as. . . males. Workman taught high school while he studied medicine at McGill University. After his graduation in 1835 he was for ten years a hardware merchant in Toronto. From 1846-53 he practiced family medicine and taught at Dr. Rolph's School of Medicine in Toronto. During this period he served as City Alderman, helped to establish a Hospital for poor immigrants, guided a Royal Commission which established the University College, Canada's first secular college, and served as the first Chair of the Board of Education. Workman fought for free, non-sectarian, yet Christian education, which in his view should not include any imposed ritual, such as daily recitations of the Lord's Prayer. He wrote, "The first step in any educational process is to inculcate in the mind of youth the great principles of honesty, truth, benevolence, loyalty to just authority and withstanding of tyranny and oppression of any sort. Next is to be placed the acquirement of that knowledge necessary to our immediate comforts and interests; and after that, accomplishments and refinements." He said that the exclusion of women "from the study of the more profound branches of literature and science" savored of "barbarism," though women should, of course, not neglect the study of "plum pudding," "the darning needle [and] the smoothing iron." A social reformer, Workman advocated publicly financed aid for the poor, extension of the franchise, and women's rights. In his many articles he showed concern for poverty, poor health care, alcoholism, and especially fetal alcohol syndrome and infant mortality. Working as a forensic expert, he denounced capital punishment. Workman served by appointment as Superintendent of the Provincial Lunatic Asylum (1853-75). He advocated kindness to the mentally ill and sought in them "that spark of humanity which dwells in each of us." Workman fought to end asylum staffing systems based on political patronage, promoted healthier living conditions for asylum inmates, and initiated an internship program for future psychiatrists. His establishment of the framework of asylum management in Canada brought many international speaking engagements and honours. Workman, Dr. Joseph (I13456)

47232 Sylvanus Gemmill, Sr., at the age of 87 years and 3 months, was taken away by death last Saturday, January 23rd. Age had enfeebled him in body and for some time past his condition gave little hope that the journey would continue much longer. In the sere and yellow leaf he lived alone in a house on Mill Street where friends and relatives administered to his wants. The funeral took place on Monday at 2 o'clock to Lanark Village Cemetery, Rev. Wm. McDonald, pastor of St. Andrew's, conducting the services.

Sylvanus Gemmill was a son of the late Rev. Dr. and Mrs. John Gemmill, who came from Dalry, Scotland, in 1821, and was born the same year on the hill where St. Paul's Church now stands. His birth marks an important era in the religious life of Lanark. The settlement was then in its infancy. The strongly inherent religious nature of the Scotch people found a deep want in the absence of church services. Petition after petition had been sent to the Old Country praying the church and Government there to send out a man who would conduct the worship of God at regular intervals. After repeated failure arrangements were made to send out the Rev. Dr. John Gemmill, who was to become pastor of St. Andrew's.

Mr. Gemmill's boyhood and early manhood was spent in the village. In the year 1846 he bought the farm now occupied by his son John and engaged in farming there until the early seventies, when, attracted by the offer of free grant lands to settlers, he moved to North Hastings. Some years ago he returned to the village and spent the remainder of his life here.

In 1848 he married Margaret Robertson of Bathurst township, and to them were born three children - John, Sylvanus and Margaret - all of whom reside in this vicinity and are well known in Lanark. Mrs. Gemmill also survives, besides two sisters - Mrs. John Smith and Mrs. Eliza Cameron, both of Renfrew.

In religion deceased was an old-time Presbyterian and a strict observer of the fourth commandment. He was a life-long Liberal, and, although not a strong party man, always upheld the principles of the Reform party. Notwithstanding the fact that he was the son of a doctor, Mr. Gemmill had a strong aversion to medicine, and never partook of any from the time he had the measles in boyhood until a month before he died.

The death record states he was born in Scotland. The obituary indicates he was born in Lanark, Ont.
