4709 Erin Beverly Johansen

Daughter, sister, friend, fianc?ee, story-lover. Born July 29, 1974, in Ottawa. Died Jan. 15 in Atlanta, Ga., in a house fire, aged 26.

E rin loved stories. Even before she could read, she insisted we repeat The Owl and the Pussycat until she had it memorized.

As she grew older, her reading became increasingly eclectic -- from Vladimir Nabokov, to Margaret Atwood, to the unpublished novels of her friend, Sean Wilson, of the Ottawa Writers Festival.

But stories come in many forms. She read plays and liked to act in them. There was a Montessori School version of A Midsummer Night's Dream and several performances at Ottawa's Canterbury High School, where she studied drama.

She loved the stories told in movies and in music. Erin was musical herself, and learned the recorder, piano, guitar and cello. But she especially liked the music of her brother Damian's bands. She could be found at every concert. And, fiercely proud of her brother, and loyal, she would coax her own friends to share in the pleasure she derived from his songs.

Erin was indeed loyal to all of her friends. While she was still living at home, I realized she was the compass by which her friends would seek direction about the troubles of life.

Not that she always knew what to do herself. One night, Damian and Erin went to a local club. He noticed a girl across the room eyeing him and was worried that, with Erin beside him, he didn't appear available.

He told Erin, "Look more like my sister." She replied, "How do I do that?" He said, "I don't know. Move farther away from me or something." The two started laughing. He never did meet the stranger.

Nor was Erin always loyal to her family. Her younger brother, Christian, remembers the time we spent a summer vacation at a cottage in Vermont. Erin and Damian decided to gang up on Chris by locking him in the boys' bedroom. Chris tried to escape by climbing up the wall, which did not go all the way to the ceiling.

It was, Chris says, he who got into trouble!

She was always independent. As a rebellious 15-year-old, she used to date men guaranteed to upset any parent. The first came bedecked in leather and chains and a score of body piercings. He was also a decade older than she was. A friend advised that if I pretended to like him, the boyfriend would be scared off. So I invited Erin and her friend to a neighbourhood pub one night, just to get acquainted.

Erin never saw him again.

Last Christmas, when we were together for the last time, that story came up while she was talking blissfully about her true love, Bryan Mundy. She met Bryan one night late last year after she had finished her shift as a waitress at an Ottawa bar. He chaired a successful dot.com company in Atlanta, and was in Canada on business.

When Erin and her best friend, Bethany Barron, went out for dinner with Bryan and a business associate the next night, Erin and Bryan fell in love. They became engaged on New Year's Day.

Almost two weeks later, when Erin flew to Atlanta to join Bryan at his grandfather's funeral, the final chapter of her own story was written. Bryan's house caught fire, a result of faulty wiring. The two began dousing the flames. Although a superb athlete, Bryan was overcome by smoke inhalation. Erin tried courageously to drag him to safety, but was herself overcome by smoke just inches from the back door.

Erin would have been embarrassed to read about herself here. But it seems right to tell this last chapter of her story, especially so soon after what would have been her 27th birthday, which she would have celebrated in love. Peter Johansen is Erin's father.

4714 Esm?e Stewart, 1st Duke of Lennox, 1st Earl of Lennox, 6th Seigneur d'Aubigny (c. 1542 ?  26 May 1583) of the Ch?ateau d'Aubigny at Aubigny-sur-N?ere in the ancient province of Berry, France, was a Catholic French nobleman of Scottish ancestry who on his move to Scotland at the age of 37 became a favourite of the 13-year-old King James VI of Scotland (and later I of England). Esm?e Stewart was the first cousin of James' father, Henry Stewart, Lord Darnley (son and heir apparent of Matthew Stewart, 4th Earl of Lennox). Despite his conversion to Calvinism he was never trusted by the Scots and returned to France where he ended his days. Sir James Melville described him as "of nature upright, just and gentle". He was the first to popularise the firstname Esm?e (spelt also Edme, etc.) in the British Isles.[citation needed] (updated wiki)

Esme Stewart, 1st Duke of Lennox, 1st Earl of Lennox (1542 - May 26, 1583) was the son of John Stewart, 5th Lord of Aubigny. Sir James Melville described him as " of nature, upright, just, and gentle".
At the age of 37 he was introduced to the 13-year-old James VI of SCotland at the time when the latter made his formal entry into Edinburgh. The two bacame extremely close and it was said by an English observer that "from the time he was 14 years old and no more, that is, when the Lord Stuart came into Scotland.... even then he bagan.... to clasp some one in the embraces of his great love, above all others" and that James became "in such love with him as in the open sight of the people often he will clasp him about the neck with his arms and kiss him". This affair was to lead to Stewart's return to France and early death in 1583.
The King first made Stewart a gentleman of the bedchamber, then went on to the Privy Council. He was created 1st Earl of Lennox, on 5 March 1580, and finally 1st Duke of Lennox on 5 August 1581. In Presbyterian Scotland the thought of a Catholic duke irked many and Lennox had to make a choice between his Catholic faith or his loyalty to James. At the end Lennox chose James and the king taught him the doctrines of Calvinism. The Scottish Kirk remained suspicious of Lennox after his public conversion and took alarm when he had James Douglas, 4th Earl of Morton tried and beheaded on charges of treason. The Scottish ministry was also warned that the duke sought to "draw the KIng to carnal lust".
In response the Scottish nobles plotted to oust Lennox. They did so by luring James to Ruthven Castle as a guest but then kept him as prisoner for ten months. The Lord Enterprisers forced him to banish Lennox. The duke journeyed bach to France and kept a secret correspondence with James. Lennox in these letters says he gave up his family "to dedicate myself entirely to you"; he prayed to die for James to prove "the faithfulness which is engraved within my heart, which will last forever." The former duke wrote "Whatever might happen to me, I shall always be your faithful servant...you are alone in this world whom my heart is resolved to serve. And would to God that my breast might be split open so that it might be seen what is engraven therein."
James was devastated by the loss of Lennox. With his return to France, Lennox had met a frosty reception as an apostate. The Scottish nobles had believed that they would be proven right in their convictions that Lennox's conversion was artificial when he returned to France. Instead the former duke remained Presbyterian and died shortly after, Leaving James his embalmed heart. James had repeatedly vouched for Lennox's religious sincerity and memorialized him in a poem called " Ane Tragedie of the Phoenix", which said he was like an exotic bird of unique beauty killed by envy.
Esme Stewart married Catherine de Balsab, circa 1572. They had five children:
Gabrielle Stewart
Henrietta Stewart (c. 1573 - 1642), married Goerge Gordon, 1st Marquess of Huntly and had issue.
Ludovic Stewart, 2nd Duke of Lennox (1574 - 1624).
Esme Stewart, 3rd Duke of Lennox (1579 - 1624).
Mary Stewart (c. 1582 - 1644), married John Erskine, 19th Earl of Mar and had issue.

4731 Eulogy, in part, for Morris Lambie, written and presented by Reverend Robert B. Day, D.D.

The character of Morris Lambie was, of course, distinguished by many other qualities than purity of heart and generosity of spirit. Nothing, however, would be more alien to his taste than to proceed farther than we have gone along such lines. And yet, it would be a deplorable omission to bring this brief tribute to a close without mentioning his very genuine enthusiasm for life, his stout heart, and the sense of dedication to the true and the good which, in the sunset of his years, took him very nearly to the other side of the world.

College days at Williamstown were happy for days for Morris Lambie. And before that his happy, wholesome boyhood in the city of Northampton. There it was he met the companion and helpmeet of the years that followed. Years of study abroad succeeded by his career as a teacher and a public servant first at the University of Minnesota, subsequently for twenty years at Harvard ?  and in the home stretch a term or two aft Tufts. Toward all these institutions, let it be said, he had the deepest loyalty.

Crash kills Ottawa-nurse, mother Recent retirement gave devoted pair time together BY JAKE RUPERT The Ottawa Citizen
A recently retired Civic Hospital nurse and her 78-year-old mother from Perth are dead following a car crash on Highway 15 near Lombardy, Ont. Carole Ann Evans, 57, and her mother Patricia Rutherford had just attended a funeral in Perth, Ont., Saturday and were returning from lunch in the village of Lombardy, about 70 kilometres southwest of Ottawa, when then-car was hit head-on by a car driven by Jeffrey Brohman, 19, at about 1 p.m. Police say Mr. Brohman, of Smiths Falls, was driving northbound on the road when he hit the east side gravel shoulder then returned to the roadway where his Dodge Shadow collided with a car driven by Ms. Evans. Ms. Evans and her mother were pronounced dead at the scene, and Mr. Brohman was taken to Smith Falls Hospital with major injuries. Police are investigating the accident, and charges may be laid pending their findings. An accident reconstruction-ist is assisting in the investigation to determine whether excessive speed was a factor. Mrs. Rutherford, whose husband died a year ago, lived her entire life in Perth, and Ms. Evans, an only child, grew up there before moving to Ottawa to work at the hospital. The accident has left members of their extended family in pain. "This is the hardest day I think I've ever spent," said Ms. Evans' first cousin, John Jarbeau, from Perth, where family members gathered yesterday to comfort each other. "Yesterday, their branch of our family died, and nobody here is doing very well. There's a lot of grief here today." Ms. Rutherford was well known in the Perth area and was active in the church and several service organizations. She was an avid golfer who held the women's title at the Links of Tay Golf Club for several years running. "That was her," said Mr. Jarbeau. "Community, church and golf. She was a beautiful person who put others' needs before hers." Mr. Jarbeau said Ms. Evans, who never married, worked in the Civic's blood unit until retiring about six months ago. "She was devoted to her work and her mother," he said. "She was the consummate nurse, always willing to help out any way she could." A double funeral has been tentatively planned for Wednesday, Mr. Jarbeau said. "They were about as close as a mother and child get," Mr. Jarbeau said. "In a way I guess it was fortunate that they died together because they can enter the next phase together. But it's hard to see that when you're feeling so much pain." Mr. Brohman's father, John, said yesterday his son was "in fairly good condition" with a broken collarbone and numerous cuts and bruises. He expected he would be able to talk to police today. He said his son didn't remember anything about the accident. "From what I can gather, there was a truck passing two (southbound) cars and he went to the shoulder to avoid hitting the truck head on, and then lost control." We must console ourselves, that we were so fortunate to have been a part of her life. she has touched so many in so many ways, words cannot express how we will miss her. May Evelyn find peace with God - that wonderful peace that she brought so many times to all of us.

MRS. LAMBIE DIES HERE AT AGE OF 80

Widow of Former Mayor of Northampton Mass., Was Once Known as Concert Contralto
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Mrs. Henrietta E. Lambie, 80, one time well known concert contralto of New York, died early today at the home of her daughter, Margaret Lambie, 1661 Crescent place, after a lingering illness.
She was the widow of Jasper Eadie Lambie, former mayor of Northampton, Mass., who died in 1898.
Born in September, 1851, in Rochester, N.Y., Mrs. Lambie moved with her parents, Dr. and Mrs. James Bryan, to New York in childhood. She was married in New York in 1875 and at that time was prominent as a concert, and church singer.
Following the death of her husband, Mrs. Lambie lived with her two children, Margaret and Morris Bryan Lambie, in Northampton for some time, until she came to Washington about 10 years ago with her daughter, an attorney specializing in international law here. Her son is a professor of political science at the University of Minnesota, Minneapolis.
Private services were held today at the apartment. The remains will be cremated and taken to Easthampton, Mass., for burial later. Besides her son and daughter, she is survived by a sister and two brothers. She was a member of All Souls' Unitarian Church here.
