46853 SMITH Whitman David Aug 4, 1929 Apr 19, 2016

Mr. Whitman David Smith of Pine Lake, Alberta, passed away after a brief illness, at the Red Deer General Hospital, at the age of 86 years. Dave was predeceased by Beth, his beloved wife of 61 years. Left to mourn his passing are four sons: David (Kerry) and Douglas (Susan) of Calgary, Daniel (Tami) of Red Deer and Duncan of Pine Lake. Survived by his grandchildren: Jay (Gillian), Brad (Kerri), Lauren, Haylie, Cole and Chase, and great- grandchildren Charlotte and Spencer.

Dave was born in Calgary, the youngest child of Alma and Whitman Smith. He grew up on both the family farm in the southern Alberta community of Blackie and the city home in the community of Roxboro in Calgary. Dave met Beth when he was 12 and she was 11, and knew she would be the love of his life; a story that we all heard many times over the years. Dave and Beth moved to Pine Lake in 1958, where they established their own family farm and raised their sons. Dave was a social fellow who enjoyed curling, volunteered as a Cub Scout leader when the boys were young and worked as a seed salesman for 25 years, which resulted in many connections throughout the community. Dave continued to live on the family farm until pneumonia forced him into the hospital. We will miss his funny and cynical outlook on life, death and taxes.

A memorial will be held at the Pine Lake Hub on Monday, May 09, 2016 at 1 pm, where we can all come together to celebrate life. The family would like to thank Dr. Daniel and the staff on Unit 31 for their attentive and compassionate care. Condolences may be sent or viewed at www.parklandfuneralhome.com Arrangements in care of PARKLAND FUNERAL HOME AND CREMATORIUM 6287 67 A Street (Taylor Drive), Red Deer (403)340-4040.

Royce Herbert Frith, CM, QC (November 12, 1923 - March 17, 2005) was a Canadian diplomat, public servant and politician.

He received a BA from the University of Toronto, an LL.B from Osgoode Hall Law School and a Dipl. d'?etudes sup?erieures (droit) from the University of Ottawa. He was admitted to the Ontario Bar in 1949. An amateur actor and performer, Frith found time to act in plays, perform on the radio, and sing and play several instruments.

Frith first came to prominence as a member of the Royal Commission on Bilingualism and Biculturalism in the 1960s. He served as a legal advsisor to the Commissioner of Official Languages from 1971 until 1977 when he was appointed to the Canadian Senate by Pierre Trudeau. He sat in the Upper House as a Liberal and served in various positions including Leader of the Opposition in the Canadian Senate and led the Liberals' filibuster against the introduction of the Goods and Services Tax forcing Prime Minister Brian Mulroney to use an obscure section of the Constitution to appoint extra Senators and ensure passage of the measure.

Frith left the Upper House in 1994 to become Canada's High Commissioner to the United Kingdom. Frith had a very high profile and used his flair for public performance to his advantage, particularly during Canada's Turbot War with Spain in which he played a crucial role in rallying British public opinion behind Canada. Frith also ensured the retention of Canada House in Trafalgar Square as the site of the Canadian high commission when the government had considered abandoning the location in order to save money. Frith returned to Canada in 1996 and resumed his law practice.

In his last years, Firth was a lawyer with the firm Ladner Downs in Vancouver and went into the office daily until just a few weeks prior to his death. James Gillespie, Sr., the veteran ore sampler for the Empire Steel & Iron Company, passed away at 6.30 o'clock this morning at his home, No. 317 Church Street, aged 69 years, 10 months and 23 days. Mr. Gillespie suffered from stomach trouble for some time, but he was able to attend to his duties at the Crane furnaces until last Sunday. He was able to be about, however, and last evening he took a walk as had been his custom.

At midnight Mr. Gillespie's condition became serious and he lapsed into a state of unconsciousness, in which condition he remained to the end. The members of his family were at his bedside when he expired. The announcement of Mr. Gillespie's death came as a shock to the entire community, especially to his sfellew-employes [sic] at the furnaces, by all of whom he was held in high regard.

The funeral services will be held on Sunday afternoon at 2 o'clock at his late home, Rev. C. H. Miller, pastor of the First Presbyterian Church, of which Mr. Gillespie was a member, officiating. Interment will be made in the family plot in Fairview Cemetery.

The deceased was born at Castle Rock, County Dery, Ireland, on September 21, 1844, a son of Mrs. Jane and the late James Gillespie. He was able to go along a train of ore cars and judge their value in iron as accurately as any chemist. He sampled ores for Leonard Peckitt, president of the Empire Steel & Iron Company; Howard Knauss, superintendent of the Emaus furnaces, and Milton Knauss, superintendent of the Crane iron works, while tney were chemists at the local furnaces, and for E. J. Lynch, chief chemist of the Empire. Mr. Gillespie died less than 24 hours after his neighbor and life-long friend, Andrew Johnson, a veteran furnaceman [Find A Grave Memorial# 191502470].

Frank Iriam was one of the very first to enlist for service in World War One. He mobilized with the 98th Regiment at Kenora, Ontario on August 04, 1914, the day war was declared, assigned regimental number 57. He went overseas with the 8th (Winnipeg Rifles) Battalion, A Company, Scout Section. He served in France and Flanders until wounded at Amiens on August 09, 1918. In the 1920's and 30's, Frank wrote a manuscript describing his experiences as a scout during the war. Although written from memory, his details match well with both his own service records and various official histories. He forbade publication until well after his death. In 2008, his son finally published it as "In The Trenches, 1914-1918". It is one of the best personal memoirs of the Great War.
