46690 | Scottish naming protocols (details here: http://david.mclaren.name/naming_protocols.htm) produced lots of McLarens with the same given name and no middle names. Any possible confusion was countered with "bynames." They might reflect occupation (e.g. Blacksmith Peter), or location (Lanark Peter), or physical character (Big and Little Peter). In this case we have Little Peter (born 1818), the son of John (born 1776), distinguished from his first cousin Big Peter (born 1813), the son of his father's brother Peter (born 1779). Emigration Posted 18 Oct 2013 by david_j_mclaren To Canada from Scotland on ship Earl of Buckinghamshire in 1821 and located on West Lot 1, Con 4, Lanark Township, Village of Lanark (Paisley Townhead Emigration Society) ( Ref: The Lanark Society settlers by Carol Bennet and The Lanark Society settlers Ships' Lists of the Glasgow Emigration Society 1821, by Gerald J. Neville) Earl of Buckinghamshire left Greenock, Scotland 29 Apr 1821 with 607 passengers, arrived Quebec 15 Jun 1821, aboard: MCLAREN, John; age 45, female 43, sons 23, 22, dau 6, 2. McLaren Peter 1818 grave script Inscription at base of headstone: A loving friend a husband dear. A tender parent lieth here. Great is the loss we here sustain. But hope in heaven to meet again. From Findagrave Peter McLaren, son of John McLaren and Margaret Stirling, was born in 1818 in Glasgow, Lanarkshire, Scotland. In 1821 he emigrated with his parents to Lanark, Ontario, Canada. He was known as "Little Peter," to distinguish him from his first cousin "Big Peter" McLaren, who was born in 1813, lived on the farm next door, and is also buried in Lanark Village Cemetery. On March 24, 1842 he married Mary MacDonald and they started their family while living and working on his parents' farm. Mary MacDonald died in 1856, shortly after the birth of their fifth child, and Little Peter raised his children with the help of his parents until they both died in 1859. With the help of his children, Peter maintained the family farm until his death in 1898. Tweedsmuir Histories of McLaren Farms Women's Institutes across the provinces, encouraged by Lord and Lady Tweedsmuir (Governor-General of Canada), collect historical information about the area and communities in their district. The Women's Institute of Ontario created a Tweedsmuir Village History for Lanark which includes farm histories. The following farm history is from a Tweedsmure book in the museum at Middleville, Lanark, Ontario. Transcribed by John Roberts, copied by Barbara I. Purdy, it is re-re-transcribed here with McLaren given names highlighted and my comments in brackets. An explanation of the land survey method for Lots/Concessions can be found here: http://david.mclaren.name/family_farms.htm W ?a of Lot 1, Concession 4 Township of Lanark West half of Lot 1 in 4th Concession '96 100 acres East part of Lot 1 in 3rd Concession '96 50 acres Sometime during the year 1820 [my records indicate July of 1821] there arrived among a group of pioneers from Scotland, John McLaren, who with his family had come to Canada to find a home in the New land. After arriving in Perth he pushed onward to Lanark Village, then only a cluster of huts on the banks of the Clyde. John McLaren took up location about one mile east of Lanark Village and built himself a log shanty where the present barn now stands. Later as he carved out his farm from the forest and grew more prosperous, he built a more substantial log house which still withstands wind and weather one hundred and twenty years later. Upon the death of John McLaren the farm passed to his son, known as "Little" Peter, who married Mary McDonald from a neighboring township bringing her to her new home on horseback. The farm now consisted of 100 acres in Lot one '96 Concession four '96 and "Little" Peter later acquired fifty acres adjoining in Concession three from one Doctor Wilson who was married to his sister. Peter McLaren had two sons and two daughters [There was a fifth child, daughter Mary, who died in 1871 at age 17.] and upon his death the farm passed to his son Duncan who married Margaret Bowes. [This is not possible, as both Duncan and his wife Margaret predeceased "Little" Peter '96 though Duncan lived and farmed this land with his widowed father for more than three decades prior to Duncan's death.] Their children were Mary, John Peter and Mervin. Of these Mervin and John Peter are now living '96 Mervin in Ottawa, John Peter in British Columbia. In 1903 the farm was purchased by John Roberts. Four years later he erected a new barn to replace the old cluster of log barns and in 1926 built the present home where the family now reside. He married Jenny Dunlop and to them were born eight children, Wm, Elsie, Isobel, Boyd, Mervin, Jennie, Agnes and George now deceased. Mervin now resides at home with his wife and two children, Douglas and Barbara. [Added note, hand written on side of page: Douglas Roberts and his wife Ruby McOwatt and ten children now reside here. In 1991 Douglas and Ruby own the house and Robert Graham part of the farm.] | McLaren, Little Peter (I13331)

46694 | Second son Alvah, born in Bastard, Nov 23, 1805; converted and baptized in 1824; entered the ministry of the main, entered Methodist body in 1827, in which he remained, either on the effiecient or retired list, till 1866, when, through some matters not well understood, his connetion with the main body was dissevered, and transerred to the M.E. Church, in which he holds the position of local Elder. His residence in Rokeby, County of Lanark, Ontario. Dorans Rapids (Dorans Mills): on the Fall River, Tay Valley Township, Bathurst Ward (Con 9, Lot 2); The first sawmill was probably built, c1850, by Alvah Adams, son of Joshua Adams, of Adamsville (Glen Tay)xxii. In the 1851 census, only his wife and children are there, Alvah having been called to another Methodist circuit. The mill was obtained by William Doran, who apparently added a grist mill - which eventually became the Village of Doran, with 40 or 50 people, comprising also a hotel and post office. The last shipment from the sawmill was in 1885, ~ 11 ~ Mills of the Tay Watershed and Area - Updated October 15, 2016 when only one man remained - and it became a ghost hamlet. Presumably, this was the subject of an adv. in November 1862 by a John Doran, to let 'his grist mill in the Township of Bathurst, containing three run of stones, and one of the best Smut Machines in the Province - also his sawmill and two upright Saws, One edging saw and shingle machine. 'Both mills are new, well fitted up, and in good working order; and either or both will be leased to a respectable person.'xxiii In 1881, William Doran is still listed as owner of the sawmill, grist mill, hotel 'and several institutions'xxiv. | Adams, Rev. Deceased was born on September 15th, 1844, a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Daniel Hogan. Her early years were spent with her widowed mother on the Hogan homestead, 3rd line of Bathurst. On June 3red, 1866, she married Patrick Brady who predeceased her just a year ago. To their union were born five sons and four daughters, all of whom are left to mourn her loss, Mrs. M.A. Crawford and Mrs. Peter Jackman, Toronto; Mrs. Laura Pennett, and Mrs. John Mackler, Bathurst; Mrs. D.F. O'Neill, Detroit; John, Daniel, William, Thomas, Bathurst, and Richard, Sault St. Marie. In her long residence on the 3rd line of Bathurst, she had endeared herself not only to her relatives and the members of her family but to a wide circle of friends and acquaintances as well, by her cheerful disposition and her kindness and charity to all. She was the last member of the Hogan families of the pioneer days of Bathurst Township. The funeral was held from the home of her son, Mr. Thomas Brady, 3rd line of Bathurst, on Sunday afternoon, there being one hundred automobiles in the cortege. The body was conveyed to St. John's Church where the funeral service was conducted by Rev. Father McCabe, of Kingston, and interment was made in St. John's Cemetery. The pallbearers were six grandsons, Messrs. Lawrence, Edward and Daniel Brady, John and Patrick Pennett and Brady Mackler. A large number of spiritual offerings were received, and the floral offerings were a wreath from the grandchildren of Toronto, and a wreath from the local grandchildren. | Hogan, Mary (I44312)
