46554 | Sad Fatal Accident One year ago last Saturday, William, the eldest son of Mr. Andrew Hood, Howick, entered the services of the Grand Trunk Railway Company full of life and hope, little thinking that exactly one year from that date he would meet with an accident which would cost him his life. However, such a fate awaited him. On Saturday morning last while coupling cars at Walkerton station, he slipped on a plank and fell under the wheels of a moving car, two wheels of which passed over his left leg frightfully mangling the flesh and shattering the bone from thigh to below the knee. he was carried into the house of a railway man nearby and in a short time four doctors were in attendance and the injured man's parents sent for. It was fully expected he would recover, but it was deemed necessary to amputate the leg, after which he appeared to be doing nicely, and it was thought that in about two weeks he could be removed to his father's home. On Tuesday last while his many warm friends in and around Clifford were feeling glad to think that he was rapidly recovering and would soon be home again, their gladness was turned into deep sorrow by a telegram announcing that at about twelve o'clock his spirit took its flight. his body was brought to Clifford on the evening train, and taken to his father's residence, from whence the funeral will take place to-day. The deceased was twenty-four years of age and unmarried. He was considered one of the most faithful, industrious and sober men on the line. he will be missed by his fellow railroad employees and by his many friends in this vicinity. His death has been a terrible shock to his parents, who have the sympathy of all their acquaintances in their hour of trial. | Hood, William "Willie" (I39540)

46568 | Samuel G Gibson MD was the son of a Scottish sea captain who retired to Goderich, Ontario (a port on Lake Huron, about 80 miles NE of Sarnia). Perhaps because he had been sailing with his father, Samuel at age 21, could neither read nor write. He went to night school and continued his studies until becoming a school teacher. He taught for several years (possibly in Manitoba or North Dakota) then decided to study medicine. He was nearly 50 years old when he graduated and established a practice in Langdon, North Dakota. At age 52 he married 29 year old "Nellie" Gibson at the Gibson home on the Scotch Line, Perth Ontario. Nellie was the high school principal at Pilot Mound, Manitoba, only 35 miles NW of Langdon. They probably met through over-lapping social/professional circles of these (cross boarder) neighboring towns. Tragically, Samuel lost his bride just two years after their wedding. She apparently died giving birth to their first-born, Andrew Bertram. It would have been rough raising a newborn at age 54. Whether or not he remarried is unknown. | Gibson, Dr. Samuel G. (I1345)
