4201 | Death of Mr, D. McDonald. The death of Mr. Duncan McDonald, which occurred at his home in Dalhousie, on Wednesday last, after an illness of about a year, has caused a feeling of the deepest regret throughout the whole township, where nearly fifty years of his life were spent. He was born on Oct. 25th, 1831, on the farm in Bathurst township, near Playfair, where his nephew, Mr. Peter McDonald, now resides. When quite young he engaged as an apprentice at the shoemaking business with the late Wm. Clcndenning at Fallbrook. After serving his time, and working at his trade around the neighbourhood for a while he moved to Dalhousie and purchased a lot from his brother Alex., who at that time owned the land on which the village of McDonald's Corners now stands, and from whom the place got its name. There he erected the building now occupied by Mr. Andrew Ranger and started a shoemaking shop, which he conducted for about fifteen years. After disposing of his property in McDonald's Corners he purchased the farm on the 9th line, where the remainder of his days were spent in tilling the soil. Before moving to McDonald's Corners he was married to Susan Cameron (sister of Mr. Thos. G. Cameron of this place), who survives, together with ten children five boys and five girls. Four of the daughters Mary, Sarah, Susan and Agnes are married and reside in Michigan. Isabella lives with her brother Benjamin on the homestead; Neil amd John In Dalhousie; Duncan, near Ardoch ; and Robert, in Michigan. Three of deceased's brothers and two sisters survive him - Alexander, in Dalhousie ; Hugh, Fallbrook; Peter, Brussels, Ont; Mrs.Jas. Lees, Fallbrook and Mrs. Elliott, Michigan. Deceased took an active interest in municipal affairs, and for seven years served in the capacity of councillor so faithfully that he was promoted, two years ago, to of the highest office in the gift of the people - that of Reeve - and which he occupied at teh time of his death. In his younger days Mr. McDonald followed the standard of the Conservative party, but latterly embraced the principles enunciated by the Reformers, and supported their candidates. He was a member of Snow Road Presbyterian Church, and one of the first to become initiated into membership in Cornucopia Lodge, No. 299, I.O.O.F., at McLaren's Depot. This is the first death to take place in that lodge since it aria instituted nearly eight years ago, and the funeral on Friday to Highland Line Cemetery was conducted by its members, who attended in a body. In the absence of Rev. Jas. Binnie, the Rev. M. McGillivray, of Kingston, officiated at the house and also at the grave. The widow and family have the sincere sympathy of the community in their bereavement. "Duncan McDonald Obituary" Newspapers.com. 4204 | Death of Mr. Isaac Halpenny On Sunday Mr. Isaac Halpenny, of the 12th concession of Lanark, passed away to his reward, after a lingering illness, aged 64 years. The deceasesd was a well-known resident of the district, postmaster in the locality which bears his name - Halpenny -- and a man much esteemed by those who knew him. he was born in the township, and resided there continually all his lifetime. He was a township councillor for many years and latterly post master. He was married four times. By his first wife - Alice Brizell - seven children were born, John F., Calra, Richard, Isaac, Emiline, Albert and William, all living. Viollet has since died. Mary Moulton, of Lanark township, was the fourth wife of deceased, who survives him. Mr. Halpenny was a member of the English church and in politics a staunch Conservative. In the recent election Mr. Halpenny was the second to record his vote in his sub-division, although in very feeble health at the time. In health deceased was an active man, zealous in whatever he was engaged in. 4205 | Death of Mr. John Manion. After a painful illness of some weeks, Mr. John Manion died at his old homestead residence, 3rd line of Bathurst, in the eighty-ninth year of his age. He was the son of an old soldier who fought under Wellington in the Peninsular war, and with his regiment, the 49th, took part in the battle of Crysler's Farm, where British valor and discipline proved too much for the greatly numerical superiority of the United States forces in that conflict. The late Mr. Manion when a child of seven years witnessed this battle, and could tell to the last days of his life how he saw the U.S. files melt away under the terrible fire of the British regulars, until horse, foot and artillery were driven from the fiend. In 1837, Mr. Manion enlisted as a volunteer in the Hon. Henry Graham's company, Perth, and was one who took part in the battle of the Windmill at Prescott, where he was slightly wounded. He remained connected with the volunteer force of Canada and died a captain in the reserve militia. He learned the drill of a battery soldier in his younger days, and always took charge of the two small brass cannon in the Perth court-house yard when firing salutes on Queen's birthday, Dominion day or other occasions of the kind. He became a Justice of the Peace years ago, was an excellent forest-ranger, and knew almost every foot of ground in the townships about here, and in the neighboring ones of Leeds, Frontenac and Addington. He was also an active worker for the County Agricultural Society, and latterly became inspector of pedlars' licenses in the county. He was pre-eminently a hardy, vigorous man, and in the pride of his strength no doubt exposed himself too often to wet, cold and other privations in his travels around the back country, which in the end sapped his vital energies prematurely. He was born in Balinasloe, Ireland, and leaves one brother yet living, in Sherbrooke. He was an unbending Conservative, though all the others of his brothers were staunch Liberals. His funeral took place on Sunday afternoon from his late home, near Glen Tay, to the Roman Catholic cemetery in Perth, and such a funeral never left Bathurst before. The cortege numbered about 170 vehicles, headed by the two brass-bands and two fire companies in parade dress, from Perth, and the Perth volunteer company, and was increased on arrival in town by a large number of its citizens. The funeral service was conducted in St. John's Church by Rev. Father Duffus, and ended at the grave by the usual religious observances; and when the earth finally closed up the grave of the old man, the volunteer company fired three volleys over the remains, and the two brass cannon he had so often captained on gala occasions, blazed forth their grim farewell to the veteran just committed, "dust to dust." 4206 | Death of Mr. John McLaren. Mr. John McLaren of 'The Hill' farm passed peacefully away this morning at one o'clock. He had been ill since New Years, and confinement in the house during the long winter months quickened the breaking up of a constitution that had always been accustomed to plenty of exercise in the open air. It was thought, however, that when spring returned and venture could be made outdoors that vitality and strength would return. But the fondest hopes proved illusive, and the end came, to the deep regret of all Lanark, where Mr. McLaren enjoyed the highest respect and esteem. Senator Peter and Mrs. McLaren, James L.P. and Mrs. McLaren, drove out Monday and visited the sick bed. The funeral will take place from his late residence on Thursday, July 2nd, at 1:30 o'clock p.m., to Lanark Village Cemetery. John McLaren was born in 1828 and at his death was in his 81st year. He first saw the light of day on the farm where he drew his latest breath. This homestead is known as "The Hill," and has a commanding view of Lanark Village and the surrounding country. It was there his parents settled after the memorable emigration in 1820. The boys grew into manhood and Peter became the lumber king of the Mississippi. The calling of the woods also attracted John, and with his brother he lumbered on the Mississippi River for about forty years. He became well known in the district through which the Snow Road extends, and at McLaren's Depot, which was the distributing point of shanty supplies for years. In the old days it was timber, then followed the sawlog era, through both of which Mr. McLaren labored with the same geniality that characterized all his life. The decline of lumbering also marked the twilight of John's career. He returned to the old homestead on The Hill, where he lived and enjoyed his remaining years with his wife and family. Forty eight years ago Agnes May became his wife. Eight boys were born to them, seven of whom are still living, one boy (John) died some years ago. Two of the boys, Peter and Allan, are at home; Daniel is in Spokane, Wash.; James in Wardner, B.C.; Fred and Findlay at Blairmore, Alta.; William at Marcellus, N.Y. Besides the Senator a brother, William lives at Lewiston, Idaho. Mr. McLaren loved his home and the locality. Every evening after the day's toil was over he would walk into the village, where his cheery word and bright smile were welcome. He was the soul of honor, did wrong to no person, and altogether lived a live that was exemplary. We shall miss him, gentleman of the old school that he was.
