4159 | Death called one of the first settlers of Orange township and one of the oldest citizens of Alexandria when Andrew Purdon passed away Saturday night, February 4, at 11:30 o'clock at the Carlquist residence in this city, aged 86 years. Mr. Purdon had lived in Alexandria since 1873 and was one of the best known and well liked citizens of this community. Death was caused by pneumonia after an illness of about two weeks. Andrew Purdon was born in Lanark county, Canada, the son of William and Isabelle Chalmers Purdon. He grew to manhood there and came to Minnesota in 1868, taking up a claim in Orange township. After proving up on the homestead he moved to Alexandria, building a home on the present site of the Mrs. C. J. Carlquist residence. He was married in Alexandria on November 4, 1869, to Annie Walker, who had been a neighbor in Ontario and who had come to Minnesota with her parents about the time that Mr. Purdon came here. Three children were born of this union: Henry and Ida K., who died in childhood, and William D., who is a vice president of the Guardian Trust Company of Cleveland, Ohio. A brother, David Purdon, lives at Wahpeton, N.D., and a sister, Mrs. Thomas Scott, lives at McDonald's Corners, Ontario. A niece, Mrs. Lucy P. Barber of Wahpeton, N.D., who lived with Mr. and Mrs. Purdon from childhood also survives him. Mr. Purdon was engaged for many years in the wagonmaker's trade. In 1908 Mrs. Purdon passed away and after her death Mr. Purdon sold his home to Mrs. C. J. Carlquist, reserving one room for himself, so that was his home during all of the sixty years of his life in Alexandria. Funeral services were held Monday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock from the Congregational church, of which he was the oldest member. Rev. Harry Blunt officiated. Burial was in Kinkead cemetery. The pallbearers were: A. A. Secord, H. E. Leach, Dr. L. M. Boyd, Howard Stevens, E. J. Brandt and Will Haberer. (Park Region Echo, 9 Feb. 1933) | Purdon, Andrew (I59490)

4172 | DEATH CLAIMS MRS. D.P. HOOD AT AGE OF 80 Dies Last Night at Home of Daughter, Mrs. J. M. Oldham; Body Sent to Duluth, Minn., for Burial Mrs. David Park Hood, mother of Mrs. J. M. Oldham, of this city, died at 7:15 o'clock Thursday evening at the Oldham home, 415 Madison street, after a several months' illness. She was born in Simcoe, Ontario, Canada, on March 2, 1852, and had passed her eightieth birthday anniversary. In 1872 she was united in marriage to David Park Hood, and resided at Clifford, Ontario, until 1888, when they moved to Duluth, Minn., where Mr. Hood died in 1913. Mrs. Hood came to Valparaiso in 1915 to make her home with her daughter, Mrs. J. M. Oldham, and since that time has resided here. She was an active worker of the Presbyterian church, and a member of several of the church organizations. Funeral services were held this morning at 10:30 o'clock, at the C. W. Bartholomew & Son chapel on Washington street, conducted by Rev. C. M. Smail, of the Christian church. There was a large attendance of relatives and friends. Janet's parents were Robert McIntosh and Elizabeth "Betsy" Brims, both born in Scotland. Robert was born about 1815-1818 while Betsy was born about 1822-1823. Robert appears to have died on October 30, 1901 in Clifford, Wellington County. The burial location for Robert and Betsy is not yet known. | McIntosh, Janet (I39603)

4191 | Death of a Drummond Pioneer By the death of Mr. John McLenaghan, which occurred last Wednesday, July 21, at the homesteaad, 8th line Drummond, another of the sturdy old pioneer settlers of the county has passed away. The deceased came to this country with his widowed mother and five sisters in 1830. All of these have since died except the youngest, Mrs Padgett, who is now in her 82nd year. They settled in Drummond, and in 1836 Mr. McLenaghan took up land on the farm where he spent the best part of his life, and by thrift succeeded in accumulating quite a goodly portion of this world's goods. He leaves a wife (still hale and hearty in her 87th year) and four sons, Charles and Robert, of Carleton Place; John of Perth; and William on the homestead. In religion he was a Presbyterian and a consistent member of the church at Balderson. The funeral took place on Friday afternoon to Elmwood Cemetery, Perth and was very largely attended, showing in a measure the esteem in which the deceased gentleman was held. In the absence of Rev. Mr. McIlraith, Rev. Mr. Buchanan, of Lanark, conducted the service, and was assisted by Rev. Mr. Blair, of Chicago. The latter, who is visiting here just now, is a native of this section and was a comrade in his school days of the sons of the deceased. The aged widow and the other members of the family have the deep sympathy of a large circle of friends in their sorrow. Mr McLenaghan was 86 years of age. 4194 | Death of Hugh Johnston. There died yesterday (Monday) in this village Hugh Johnston, Lanark's oldest man. His exact age was 90 years and 3 months. He was born Sept. 28th, 1822 at St Andrew's, Quebec. His early life lay in those pioneer days when hardship and toil were the common lot of the men and women who ventured into these primitive wilds and with lieautiful courage set about the task of making homes. He was of a sturdy type, the knocks and blows incident to such a life only serving to make him the more steadfast in later years. Much of his younger days are obscured through lack of record in the family, but it may correctly be surmised that he played a part in the lumbering industry which long ago was the sole opening any young man in the district had for earning a living. The present generation knew Mr. Johnston as the fine old gentleman who for nearly thirty year had been night watchman in the woolen mill of Messrs, Boyd CaMwell Co. Limited, retired in 1909 on account of failing health, but always with mind alert for the things going on around him. His parents were John Johnston and wife, Margaret Cathcart. There were two brothers, George and John and two sisters, Mrs. W. Clark and Mrs. W. Field. In 1858 Mr. Johnston was married to Miss Margaret Gillespie and to them were born Mrs. James Rodger, Nellie, John and Mary deceased, Ida (Mrs. F. Deachman of Edmonton and Bella at home. He was a kind-hearted man, simple in his habits, retiring disposition and throughout his life practising that golden rule which demands of men the same treatment they would give others. Faithful in the discharge of any duty with which he was intrusted, this quality commanded for him the respect of his employers and earned superannuation when he was no longer able to do the work that he had done so long and so well. The funeral will take place on Friday afternoon at 1 o'clock, to Lanark Village cemetery. | Johnston, Hugh (I59377)
