Melvin Porter Dies In California Last Saturday
A message was received here this week telling of the death of Melvin L. Porter, 41, Los Angeles, Calif., who died there from the effects to pneumonia, contracted during the trying days after the earthquake. Death came on Saturday night.
Mr. Porter, who formerly operated a blacksmith shop in Davenport, is survived by his widow, Edna, at Los Angeles, his aged mother, Mrs. Clara Porter at Davenport, and a brother, Charles at Odessa.
Funeral arrangements have not been ascertained but it is believed that services and burial will be held at Los Angeles. Work from California indicates that pneumonia cases are prevalent at Los Angeles, following the exposures that resulted during the earthquake.
Mrs. Porter two weeks ago received word from her son that he had escaped uninjured in the earthquake, and the news of his death came as a bad shock.

4112 David Dick, son of John Dick and Marion (sic) (Mary) Gemmill, left Ontario around the year 1875 with his wife and three children and went to Diamond City, Manitoba. He later went to the Yukon where he ran a store during the gold rush and then went to Vancouver, where he was mayor of a small town.

Mrs. Janet (Dick) Burchnall of Nanaimo, (born 1894) says that his grandson, Walter Owen, became Lt. Governor of British Columbia.

David G. Dick, lived in Vancouver, interviewed in 1920 about his military experiences:

"My father took part in crushing the Mackenzie Rebellion in 1837, although he was in sympathy with the objects sought for, but not in sympath with the means being applied to secure them."

"Near the close of the Crimean War, word came to us that Sebastopol had fallen. I assisted my father in raising a flag pole, with the flag already nailed to the mast, as a token of lyalty and joy for the success of the British and Allied armies in hunting the Bear back into its hole again and putting a damper on Russian aggression."
(1853-1856)

"When the Fenian Rid of 1870 occurred I was a partially drilled soldier. The company I joined was a company of the 42nd Battalion. At that time I was living at Middleville which was about 17 miles from Almonte, our headquarters. I well remember that May morning when I left for the front. We heard a rumour the evening before that the Fenians were crossing the international boundary. We went to bed as usual but did more thinking than sleeping.

At two o'clock in the morning I heard the rattle of a soldier's sword on the stone door step. I jumped from bed and on going to the door found the Ensign of our company (Dougall McEwen by name) who gave orders that I should get to headquarters in time to catch the seven o'clock train. I rushed out and hired a man with a horse and buggy to drive me to Almonte. I bade my wife goodbye and planted a kiss on the forehead of our only child, a boy of about three months old.

I was standing on the station platform when the seven o'clock train came along. I was whirled over the rails in short time, some 54 miles to Brockville.

The captain of our battalion stood six feet seven inches tall, and the smallest man in the company was six feet. We did not hae to fire a shot. The nearest we got to the enemy was when an American boat called at Brockville wharf with some 300 Fenians on it. It was at night and the officeer in comman d got wind of their presence and was there waiting with a detachment of soldiers. The enemy quit. They left their rifles and headed for home."

4117 David Logan, Sr., had a thrilling experience with a panther as he was riding over the Allegheny Mountains. The huge creature dropped from the overhanging branches of a tree onto him, sinking its immense fore claws into the Continental overcoat he wore. His terrified horse gave such a leap and plunge that the panther lost its balance and fell off, rolling down the mountainside, carrying in its claws, every scrap of clothing from his back, leaving awful scratches from which the blood ran in streams and tearing the flesh from the horse with its hind claws. David brought pieces of clothing back the next time he visited in the Cove, to let his friends see what a narrow escape he had. (Twentieth Century History of Clearfield County, Pennsylvania." 1911, p. 980.) David's great-grandson, Robert Boston Daugherty, said of his great-grandfather that "a panther jumped out of a tree onto him, and clawed him, so that he was left a cripple." David and his wife Charlotte had ten children. Logan, David Sr. (I53322)

Obituary
The late John Allan - As the Late John Allan, who died on may 5th, 1900, at the home of his son Isaac, at Mississippi Station, was well known in Perth and its vicinity, a more extended sketch of his life may not be uninteresting to our readers, and especially so, as his birth is synchronous with the first settlement on the Scotch Line. He was born on August 24th, 1816, and was the first male child born in the new settlement. His parents were born in Corstorphinie, three miles from Edinburgh, and lived in Edinburgh after their marriage. Coming to Canada in 1815, they remained in Brockville the first winter, and settled on the Scotch Line in the spring of 1816. His father, Mr. Francis Allan, was a Writer to the Signet in Scotland. His mother, whose maiden name was Janet Cowie, was born in Scotland in 1798, and lived to an extreme old age. She was the first white woman to cross the Rideau River, near Perth.

John Allan was nearly all his life engaged in the milling business. He first had a saw-mill and a carding mill on the Scotch Line. Later, he ran a sawmill and a grist mill on the Tay river, and was also engaged in the milling business in Perth. In 1877 he removed from Perth to Palmerston, at Snow Road station, wher he owned a sawmill for several years.

In August 1841, he married to Ann McLean, whom he survived ten years. There were eleven children, seven of whom are still living: Francis, in Perth, Thomas in Vancouver, William John in the Lake Superior District, James, Robert and Isaac at Mississippi, and Mrs. S. Donaldson, at Donaldson 's Mills.

Mr. Allan always took an active part in Christian work, and was an enthusiastic and faithful Sabbath School worker. Hesuperintended the Sabbath School on the Scotch Line, and held that position also in Perth. At Snow Road he organized the first Sunday School, and faithfully performed the duties of Superintendant for many years until laid aside by illness from active work. It was largely through his efforts that the Snow Road congregation was established. He was an elder in the Presbyterian Church for 47 years, having been ordained in Knox Church, Perth on May 28th, 1853. He also took a warm interest in all affairs of a public nature, and for some years rendered good service as a member of the Palmerston council. In politics he was a staunch Reformer. The funeral services wer held in Snow Road church on May 7th, and was largely attended. The Rev. Jas. Binnie, the pastor, conducted the service and spoke from the text: "Be thou faithful unto death and I will give thee a crown of life" (Rev. 2, 10), and referred to  Mr. Allan's faithfulness in the community, as a citizen, friend, and neighbor, his faithfulness in the home, in the S. School and in the church. Six of his fellow elders from the McDonald's Corners, Elphin and Snow Road congregations acted as pall-bearers, and his remains were lovingly followed by his children, friends and neighbours, and were interred in the Crawford Cemetery.
