3417 | CAMPBELL, James Willard - Jim Campbell died peacefully at Cassellholme Home for the Aged, North Bay, on Wednesday, April 1, 2009. He was in his 87th year. Jim was predeceased by his wife Ruth (nee Quigley) (1926 -2006). He was the beloved father of Glen Campbell (Susan) of North Bay and grandfather of Greg and Lisa Campbell. Jim was the dear brother of Blanche McLaughlan of Oakville, Dorothy Adamson of Toronto, Jean Campbell of Guelph and the late Elsie Meehan, Evelyn Bartraw, Clinton, Lloyd, John, June and Joan Campbell. Jim was born July 31, 1922 in Nipissing Township. He was one of 11 children of Ruby Ann (Barber) and Albert Campbell. He married Ruth Quigley on September 15, 1951 and they made their home in North Bay and had one son, Glen. Jim worked as a Carman with the Canadian Pacific Railway. Throughout his adult life Jim was active playing baseball in the summer and hockey in the winter. He was part of the South Shore Hockey League. He also enjoyed partridge hunting and ice fishing and taking long walks in the evenings. After 43 years, Jim retired from the CPR and he and Ruth moved to Callander until failing health necessitated their move to the Emmanuel Apartments. Ruth died in 2006 and Jim moved into Cassellholme in June of 2008. The funeral service for Mr. Campbell was officiated by Pastor Carole Dobbs at the PAUL FUNERAL HOME, Powassan on Sunday, April 5, 2009. Casket bearers were Greg Campbell, George Good, Jim Bartraw and Denis McLachlan. Interment at Powassan Union Cemetery will take place later in spring. Following the service, the Campbell family welcomed friends and relatives for a time of fellowship and a luncheon in the Paul Funeral Home reception room. Ruth (Quigley) was the beloved wife of James W. Campbell of North Bay, and the loving mother of Glen (Susan) of North Bay. She was the proud grandmother of Greg & Lisa Campbell. Ruth was predeceased by her parents Pearl Ann (Storie) and Joseph Quigley and her sister Helen Fraser. She is survived by her sisters Muriel Keall (Gordon, deceased) of Astorville, Vera Duquette (Pat) of North Bay, Verna Giesler (Willie) of Powassan and Joseph Hector (Sylvia) of Powassan ------------------------------------------ Ruth was born on March 26, 1926 in Nipissing Township. She was the third of 6 children of Pearl Ann (Storie) and Joseph Quigley. Ruth grew up attending school in Christian Valley and was working when she met James "Jim" Campbell. They were married on September 15, 1951. A year Later they were blessed with the birth of their only child, Glen. In her younger years she liked to attend dances. After Glen had begun school, Ruth returned to the workforce and managed the Lighthouse Lodge on Lake Nipissing for two years. She also managed the Look-Out Motel for 7 years and worked at the Terrace Motel. When she wasn't occupied with the hospitality industry, Ruth enjoyed gardening flowers and vegetables both outside and in the home. Her home always had birdfeeders and she especially liked watching the hummingbirds feed. Ruth would send Glen to the store to bake something for her neighbours whenever they experienced a death or a challenge. Throughout her life and even during failing health, Ruth remained actively interested in and supportive of her family and friends. Like the rest of her siblings she grew up in Christian Valley near the village of Nipissing where she attended school. On September 15 she married James Willard Campbell of North Bay, and is the mother of one son, Glen. In her younger years she lived to go to dances. After Glen had started his schooling, Ruth managed the Lighthouse Lodge on the Lake of Nipissing for two years, then the Lookout Motel for seven years and the the Terrace Motel. Ruth enjoyed baking for family and friends. she enjoyed gardening, watching and feeding birds. On August 28, 2006 she died of cancer at the North Bay General Hospital. Mom said when her sisters went to get her clothes for the funeral she already had them all together and waiting for them. 3421 | Campbellton and surrounding areas were saddened by the death of Reginald James Pollock on Sunday, Jan. 7, 1996 at Campbellton Regional Hospital, after a brief illness. Born on Sept. 29, 1922 in Glen Levit, he was the son of James and Barbara Betteridge Pollock. He attended school in Glen Levit and worked in the lumber camps for many years. He was employed for many years with Fraser Co. Ltd., Kedgwick, until his retirement, he was employed as a nursing orderly at Soldier's Memorial Hospital, where his caring and compassionate attitude touched many lives. He served with the Royal Canadian Artillery Unit as a gunner from 1939-1944. He was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch No. 19, Campbellton and was a Loyal Orange Lodge Member for over 25 years, where he served as county master and lecturer and did a lot of committee work in Grand Lodge. He leaves to mourn his wife Ann (Woodworth); three daughters: Sandra (Mrs. Wendal Harquail) Moncton, NB, Sheila (Mrs. Charles Duguay), Bowmanville, Ont; one step-son Mike Woodworth, Pringe George, BC. He is also survived by three sisters: Frances, (Mrs. John Smith) Campbellton, NB, Bertha Adams, Matapedia West, Que., and Glennis Pollock, Moncton, NB; two brothers: Beverly and Denzil, both of Glen Levit, NB,:two brothers Ronald and Whitney and a sister Doris, predeceased him. Funeral services was held on Wednesday, Jan 10 at 2 pm. in First United Church, Campbellton. Rev. Jim MacDonald, conducted the largely attended service, which was a very comforting one to Reg's family. The hymns sung were Amazing Grace, We Love Our Church O God, and Abide with Me. The eulogy was given by Penny Pollock. The numerous beautiful floral tributes, memorial donations, and other gifts testified to the high esteem held for Reg Pollock. He was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather, brother, brother-in-law, uncle and friend to all who knew him; and will be greatly missed. Pallbearers were Whitney Firth, William Betteridge, Keith MacKenzie, Robert Betteridge, Gary Irvind and Paul Murray. Macklen, 86, of 24530 Macklen Road, died Monday morning in Samaritan Medical Center, Watertown, where he had been a patient since April 11. Mr. Macklen operated a dairy farm until retiring in 1983. In spring, he operated a sugarbush on his farm. Born March 21, 1921, in Worth, son of Mark M. and Carlotta Kenfield Macklen, he graduated from Adams High School in 1940. Following his graduation he started working on the family farm. He married Leona Stillman on Sept. 23, 1945, in Lorraine. Mr. Macklen enjoyed woodworking, making snowshoes, gardening, hunting and fishing. He was a member of the Lorraine United Methodist Church and the Rodman Masonic Lodge, was a councilman on the Worth town board and was town historian. He was the Worth representative to the Tug Hill Council, and the Tug Hill Commission designated him a Tug Hill Sage. He also served on the boards of trustees for the Northern New York Agricultural Historical Society's Stone Mills Museum and the South Jefferson Historical Association. He was a former school trustee for Worth District Schools and a former member of the Lorraine Grange, the Jefferson County Farm Bureau and the Worth Fire Department. Mr. Macklen was honored on the WWNY-TV7 series "North Country's Finest" for his expertise in snowshoe construction. Surviving besides his wife are three daughters and two sons-in-law, Shirley and Robert Weikel, Lorraine, Mary and Noel Trahan, Rodman, and Joan M. Christini, Arlington, Va.; a sister, Bernice Humphrey, Cape Vincent, four grandchildren and several nieces, nephews and cousins. A brother, Baxter, died before him. The funeral will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Carpenter-Stoodley Funeral Home, Belleville, with the Rev. Mary Drake, pastor of the Lorraine United Methodist Church, officiating. In July last he was compelled to go to bed and since that time had not been able to leave his room. Mr. Cavers was born in Beckwith on August 7, 1864, aged was in his 69th year. He was the son of the late Mr. Thomas Cavers and his wife Margaret Campbell, pioneer settlers of Beckwith. He was married in Carleton Place to Miss Catherine Hyslop, who survives. Following the marriage the couple took up residence in Beckwith where he was one of the best known farmers of the community, remaining there until five years ago when he retired and with his wife and family moved to Carleton Place to reside. Mr. Cavers was a member of St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church and was prominent in all departments. Besides his widow, he is survived by one son, Stewart Cavers, Carleton Place, and three daughters, (Isobel) Mrs. Duncan Stewart, Appleton; (Ethel) Mrs. Leon Tuttle, Stamford, Conn., and (Meda) Mrs. H. 3440 | Caroline McLaren Holmes McLaren, Caroline Holmes was born on the Scotch Line, Perth, on September 16, 1897, a daughter of William and Caroline McLaren. She was predeceased by sisters Beryl and Hilda, and brother John and William and her nephew Dr. Reginald Edwards. She leaves surviving her: Russell A. Edwards, QC, nephew (he and his brother Reginald are sons of Beryl McLaren Bradley Edwards); Elizabeth Caroline Wonnacott, a grand niece; Peter Edwards, a grand nephew; Jennifer Wonnacott, a great-great-niece; Michael Wonnacott, a great-great-nephew; Eric Edwards, a grand-nephew; Valerie Edwards, a grandniece; Cameron Edwards, a great-great-nephew; and Annika Edwards, a great-great-niece. Caroline graduated with a gold medal in Science from Queen's University and was the first female theological graduate from Knox College University of Toronto, where she received a divinity degree. She taught Science and Physical Education in several Ontario high schools. She married George Holmes in 1942 and together they travelled the world. After her marriage she lived in Wellandport until confined to a nursing home in St. Catharines, where she passed away peacefully on June 29, 1997, in her 100th year. Caroline is buried beside her husband in the Wellandport cemetery. 3444 | CARROLL Mrs. Irene Edna Porter Carroll (Shorrock) known by her family as Edna, passed away suddenly at the'Rimbey Hospital on Friday, Nov. 10, 2006 at the age of 82 years. Edna was born at Gilby, Alberta on May 26, 1924, the first child of James William Shorrock MM and Norah (Porter) Shorrock. Edna attended Medicine Valley School then boarded in Eckville in order to finish her education. In September, 1941, Edna married Charles Carroll, a neighbor boy. Shortly afterwards Charles joined the army and was stationed in Esquimalt, B.C. Edna joined him for a short time in Victoria until he was transferred to Halifax, N.S. Following the war, they settled in the Gilby area where they raised 6 children and farmed for the next 60 years. Edna was an active member of the community and belonged to the Gilby Ladies Club, the Benjamin Ladies Club, the Gimlet WMS and the Rimbey LWML. She was an avid reader and loved meeting people and hearing their stories. She very much enjoyed writing, listening to music and most of all dancing. She treasured the company of her family and friends and paid special attention to her grandchildren and great grandchildren. After Charles and Edna quit farming, they retired to Rimbey. Edna was predeceased by her parents, her husband Charles in August, 2006, her half sister Alice Coppithorne of Maine, a son Freeman in 1971, grandson Jimmy Rushton in 1987, and a son - in-law Ron Aldridge. Edna will be lovingly remembered by her five daughters Beverly Aldridge of Williams Lake, B.C., Heather (Paddy) Gunderson of Williams Lake, Penny Jane (Lyal) Johnston of Rimbey, Nita Louise (Dwayne) Lawson of Calgary, Kathleen (Stewart) Grant of Red Deer and brothers Alan Shorrock and Cliff Shorrock. Edna also leaves to mourn 9 grandchildren, 9 great grandchildren, many nieces and nephews and a host of friends. Funeral services will be held from the Zion Lutheran Church in Rimbey, AB on Wednesday, November 15, 2006 at 11:30 a.m. with Pastor Al Lewis officiating. Interment will follow at the Bradshaw Cemetery at Leedale, Alberta. If friends desire, memorial contributions may be made to the Zion Lutheran Church or Mustard Seed Ministries.
