Mrs. Luce was the daughter of William and Sarah Lockwood, Glenn county pioneers, who were married in England came to this country as a young couple and established their home in the Newville district in the early days. Their marriage endured for 56 years before death claimed them within a week of each other in 1927.
Their daughter, Edith, was born on the old Griffith ranch near Elk Creek March 1, 1878. The family moved to the old Scribner ranch northwest of Newville in 1897, and her marriage to Zachariah Luce took place in 1903.
Her husband, who preceded her in death about a year ago, was also a member of a pioneer family. His parents, Mr. and Mrs. Alonzo Luce, had come to California in 1852, and had settled in the Newville section in 1864.
The ranch on which Mr. and Mrs. "Zach" Luce made their home until his death was part of the old Luce ranch, with some adjoining land that they had purchased.
Mrs. Luce had been in ill health for some time, and about a week before her death had taken rooms at the Laura Millsap place in Orland, in order to be near to medical service.
Surviving is one brother, Lester Lockwood, and a nephew, Kenneth Curran, of Paradise, who was raised by Mr. and Mrs. Luce. Curran was visiting Mrs. Luce Monday evening when she collapsed and died. - Transcribed by E.
