1451 | 1930, Friday November 7, The Almonte Gazette front page James D. Robertson Mr James D. Robertson, an old resident of Ramsay township, passed away Wednesday morning at the home of his daughter, Mrs Wm Anderson, aged 85 years. Mr Robertson was a native of the township and lived all his life there. His wife who before her marriage was Sarah Jane Scott predeceased him by about eight years. He is survived by four sons and five daughters. The sons are William and Ernest, in Ramsay, George and Everard in Saskatchewan; the daughters, Mrs Elizabeth McLean in Saskatchewan, Mrs Hare, in Toronto, Mrs Wm Anderson, Mrs Alton Matthews and Miss Ethel Robertson of Ramsay. One brother also survive, Mrs Arch Robertson, of Carleton Place, and one sister, Mrs Charles McNeill, of Clayton. Also 23 grandchildren and three great grandchildren. Young Wellknown Citizen Laid To Rest In Auld Kirk Cemetery On Thursday Mr Peter Johnston Young, who died at his residence, Tuesday, January 5th, after a few hour's illness was the last surviving child of Robert Young and Ann Mason. They came to Ramsay from Scotland in 1832, settling on a farm two miles from Almonte on the 9th line. The family consisted of 11 children three of whom were born in Scotland and the others in Ramsay. "P.J." as he was familiarly known, was born February 13th, 1846. He lived on the homestead until 1903, when he moved to Almonte, where he has lived since that time. He was a Presbyterian by heritage and choice, and took an active part in the affairs of St. John's Church. He was known for his hospitality and for his ability in entertaining, especially among the young people in whom he always took a great interest. His Scotch songs and readings were in demand, and he was always pleased to respond. He visited Scotland on several occasions and was an ardent admirer of everything Scotch. Though he never married he brought up his sister's family, namely, Annie, James and Robert Y. Naismith, of whom James in the only survivor. Annie lived with him until her death, three years ago. The funeral which was largely attended was held from his late residence on Union street on Thursday, January 7th. Services were conducted by Rev A.J. Fowlie of St. John's Church, assisted by Rev J.M. Rutherford Interment was made in the Auld Kirk Cemetery. The pallbearers were: ? three nephews, And. Young of Arnprior; William Young of Arnprior; Robert Young Buckham of Kinburn, and C. 1454 | 1933, Friday February 3, The Almonte Gazette page 5 Late Mr Young Millar Pakenham and the surrounding district was saddened Monday morning when it learned that a life long resident of the township, Mr Young Millar, had passed away in his 80th year. Deceased had been seriously ill for the past month with flu which later developed into pneumonia. Deceased was born in 1852, a son of the late Christopher Millar and Elizabeth Comba. Of the family only one brother, Mr Peter Millar in his 94th year, remains. The late Mr Millar was a staunch supporter of the Conservative party and work tirelessly in its behalf. Until the New Year, the late Mr Millar had taken an active interest in the community. Deceased was a member of St Andrew's United Church. He leaves to mourn his loss, besides his widow, who was formerly Jessie Campbell MacDowall, one son Ernest Millar of the Bellamy Road, six daughters, Flossie, Mrs Lloyd Smith of Carleton Place; Maud, Mrs Thompson, of Kingston; Ethel, Mrs Allan Wood, Indian Head; Jessie, Mrs Julian, Almonte; Bertha, Mrs Robert Royce, White Lake and Mrs Raycroft of Darling. The funeral took place on Thursday of this week from his late residence to St Andrew's United Church. Interment was in the Auld Kirk Cemetery. The services were conducted by his pastor, Rev J.P. 1455 | 1933, Friday January 6, The Almonte Gazette page 4 Mr William Paul There passed away at his home on the seventh line of Ramsay last Monday morning Mr William Paul. one of the township's best known and most highly respected residents. Born on the homestead in July 1858, the only son of the late William Paul and Jane Simpson, he spent all of his life on the farm on which he died. Being ill only a few days his death came as a decided shock to his many friends and relatives. In February, 1893, William Paul was married in Ramsay, to Christine Porterfield, who predeceased him 21 years ago. Deceased was of a quiet, retiring disposition, a trusted friend and neighbour. In religion he was formerly a Presbyterian, having been a member of St John's Church prior to union. He was a member of Bethany United church in Almonte, at the time of his death. Left to mourn his passing are one son William Melville Paul on the homestead; (Olive), Mrs Albert Naismith, Ramsay, and (Edna) Mrs Edward Rose, Pakenham; also one sister Miss Agnes Paul of Lanark, and eight grandchildren. Two sisters are deceased (Kate), Mrs John Millions of Waskada, Manitoba; and Miss Margaret Paul of Ramsay. The funeral which was held Tuesday afternoon to the Auld Kirk Cemetery was largely attended. Services were conducted by Rev C.D. McLellan assisted by Rev J.M. Rutherford. Pallbearers were: Joseph Paul, Carleton Place; William Paul of Stittsville; John Yuill of Rosetown, Sask.; M.W. Wallace, William Paul and John McArton of Ramsay. The late Mr. Gilmour was in his 72nd year and was born in Ramsay Township, living the greater part of his life in Almonte. He is survived by three sisters, Mrs. Thomas Johnston of Carleton Place, Mrs Wm Wilson of Carleton Place, and Mrs. Jas Townsend of Almonte. Four brothers predeceased him. The funeral was held Friday morning at 10:30 o'clock from the home of his nephew, William Gilmour, and was largely attended by friends and relatives. Rev A.J. Fowlie conducted service at the home and graveside. The pall bearers were Messrs Donald Taylor, James Allison, Charles and James Moore, Edward Gilmour and Alex McLauchlin of Ottawa. Robertson, member of a well-known Ottawa Valley family. Mrs Robertson was in ill health for several weeks. She was formerly Miss Elizabeth Ann McKay, and lived at Arnprior, Ont., before moving to Ottawa about 16 years ago. Robertson The funeral of Elizabeth Ann McKay, wife of John T. Robertson of Ottawa, was held last Tuesday from the home of her sister, Mrs Margaret Schoular, Almonte, where service was conducted by Rev C.D. McLellan of Bethany Church, Almonte. Interment was made in the Auld Kirk cemetery. The pallbearers were William, Alex and James Schoular, Hartley McKay, Nelson and Norman Dunlop, all nephews of the deceased. Deceased passed away at her home at Ottawa, on Sunday, Sept 16th. Mrs Robertson, was in her 64th year, the first break in a family of ten. She was a daughter of the late William McKay and Annie Pretty, pioneers of Lanark township, and was born in Lanark township. There she was married. About 36 years ago she moved to Arnprior with her husband. They lived there for about twenty years and then moved to Ottawa. 1459 | 1935, Thursday December 5, The Almonte Gazette front page Mr William Glover There passed away at his home on Christian Street, Almonte, at four o'clock Wednesday afternoon, a wellknown and popular citizen in the person of William Glover, in his 70th year. Born in the town of Almonte, a son of the late John Glover and Elizabeth Jenkinson of Edinburgh, Scotland, who came to this town in the early days when it still was a village, deceased played a prominent part in the industrial life of the town. He was a master mechanic, having learned his trade in the Young Brothers' Foundry and later was associated with Bowland, William and Glover, who purchased the foundry from its original owners, and who carried on the business until it was taken over by the late Alex McLean. Mr Glover was twice married, first to Miss Minnie McKay of Ramsay, who passed away some twenty years ago. To this union were born two daughters and a son, namely, Dorothy, Mrs Elsworth of Stamford, Conn, Wilma, Mrs A. Clark of Vancouver and William of Kirkland Lake, all of whom survive him. Seventeen years ago the deceased was married to Miss Letita Watchorn of Almonte. There remain to mourn his loss in addition to his widow and members of the first family, two sisters and one brother: Mrs David Williams of Almonte; Mrs Andrew Young of Almonte and Mr Adam Glover of Hamilton. Always of a quiet kindly disposition, Mr Glover enjoyed to an unusual degree the confidence and respect of the community, whose sympathy is extended to the family home on Christian street of Friday afternoon at two o'clock to the Auld Kirk Cemetery, Rev A.J. Rodger Death has once again invaded our village, claiming on Sunday morning one of our aged and most highly respected citizens in the person of Mrs. James H. Rodger, nee Ellen Miller. During her illness which lasted a little over a year, her sufferings were borne in that quiet, patient manner so characteristic during her lifetime. A native of Lanark Township, in which her whole lifetime was spent, she was born on the farm now owned by Mr. Russell Ramsbottom, Sept. 18, 1855. She was the last surviving member of a family of 11 children, born to William S. Miller, who came from Ballymena, Ireland, and his wife, Ann Graham of Lanark Township. On June 18, 1875 she was united in marriage to Jas. H. Rodger of this township, by Rev. James Wilson, and to them were born a family of eight children, all of whom reside within a radius of 20 miles and were present with her during the last weeks of her life. There are also 28 grandchildren and five great grandchildren. The funeral service was held Tuesday afternoon from her late residence to St. Paul's United Church, interment being made in Middleville Greenwood Cemetery, her pastor. Rev. K D. Snelgrove conducting the services. Six grandsons were pallbearers and many beautiful floral tributes adorned the casket. The bereaved husband and family namely - William S. of Almonte; Jas. Rodger, passed on to the spirit world last Friday at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Finlay Ramsbottom. He had reached the age of 85 years and 3 months, and during his lifetime was seldom seriously ill, but for a few years his heart had caused him uneasiness and his sudden demise was due to this weakness when walking around the home. Mr. Rodger was married to Ellen Miller in the year, 1875, and to this union there was a family of five daughters and three sons, Jessie A., Mrs. Charles Ramsbottom, Lanark; Harry L., Maggie, Mrs. Finlay Ramsbottom, Ferguson's, Falls; William S. of Almonte; Nellie, Mrs. Welland McKay of Ramsay; James of Almonte; Edna, Mrs. Robert Woods of Arklan; Eva, Mrs. Wm. Rintoul. Galbraith. The large funeral services Sunday afternoon were conducted at the home of Mrs. Finlay Ramsbottom, thence to United church Middleville, by the pastors, Rev. Snelgrove and Rev. McLean of Lanark. The six grandsons who acted as pallbearers were: James and John Rodger, John Rintoul, Wilbert McKay, Lloyd Ramsbottom, Roy Rodger and four grand-daughters were flower bearers, Eleanor Rintoul, Mildred and Margaret Ramsbottom and Ella Rodger. Young After an illness which began shortly before Christmas, Francis (Frank) Murdock Young, retired railroad man and resident of this town for many years, passed away early Monday morning at the age of 79. Born in Appleton, Ont, when the nineteenth century was barely half finished, Mr Young spent his youth and early manhood in this district in the historic period which led up to Confederation. Moving to Almonte at an early age, Mr Young worked in the woollen mills there, later moving to North Bay. In the Northern Ontario city he entered the service of the C.P.R., in which he remained until the time of his retirement in 1924, when he returned to Almonte. The late Mr Young and his wife were married on April 21, 1885, at Pembroke, and were honoured by a host of friends when their golden jubilee was celebrated in April last year. He is survived by his widow, formerly Mary Ann Cattell, who is four years his junior; four sisters, Mrs Agnes Munroe, Carleton Place; Mrs William France, Marcellus, N.Y.; Mrs Marion Reid, Powell avenue, Ottawa, and Mrs Harriett McNaughton, Lacombe, Alta; one son, V.M Young, Byron street, Ottawa; one daughter, Mrs J. A. Campbell, of Regina, and three grandchildren, Vivien Campbell and Constance and Betty Anne Young of Ottawa. The funeral took place Wednesday afternoon service being held at the home under the auspices of Alpha Lodge I.O.O.F. after which the body was conveyed to the Almonte Presbyterian Church where a second service was conducted by the pastor. Rev A.J. Fowlie, assisted by the Rev J.M. Rutherford of the Reformed Presbyterian Church. The remains were placed in the Auld Kirk Cemetery vault. Brethren of Alpha Lodge acted as pallbearers. Among those attending the funeral from a distance were: Mrs Maynard Peterkin, Mrs J.A. McLachin, Mrs Marion Reid and Mr Andrew Templeton, all of Ottawa and Mr Bruce Munro, Mrs Geo Campbell, Mrs H. 1464 | 1937, Thursday April 15, The Almonte Gazette page 4 Mrs Andrew Dunlop The death occurred on Saturday morning, April 10, at the home of son-in-law, Mr Wilbert Porterfield, Lake Avenue, Carleton Place of a life-long resident of Almonte, in the person of Mrs Andrew Dunlop, after a lengthy illness. Born in Ramsay, a daughter of the late Mr and Mrs James Gilmour, pioneers of this township, deceased was married to Andrew Dunlop, overseer in the Rosamond Woolen Co., 59 years ago, by the late Rev Mr Lougheed. Mr C.D. Millar was best man and Miss Margaret Gilmour, sister of the bride, acted as bridesmaid. Of late years, Mr and Mrs Dunlop had been in the habit of spending the winter with Mr and Mrs Porterfield. Besides her husband, five daughters and two sons survive: Ethel (Mrs W.J. Porterfield) of Carleton Place; Gertrude (Mrs H.S. Reynolds) of Calgary, Alta; Inez (Mrs C.H. Ley) Toronto; Olga (Mrs A.W. Roberts) of Berlin, Germany; Roberta (Mrs Gordon Brown) of Ottawa; Frank of Ottawa and Russell of Calgary. Two daughters predeceased their other, Jessie, the late Mrs Thompson of Fort William, and Miss Delice of Almonte. Two sisters also survive: Mrs Frank Stevens of Ogdensburg, N.Y., and Mrs James Kelly of Los Angeles, Cal. The funeral was held from her late residence, Carleton Street, on Monday, April 12, at 2.30 p.m. to the Auld Kirk Cemetery. Rev C.D. McLellan conducted the service, assisted by Rev D.C. Munro of Memorial Park Church, Carleton Place. Both clergymen spoke very feelingly of the noble and kindly qualities of the deceased, so evident during the period of her prolonged illness. The pallbearers were Mr W.C. Pollock, Mr Robert Hogg, Mr Geo Clement of Almonte; three sons-in-law Mr C.H. Ley, Toronto, Mr Gordon Brown of Ottawa and Mr W.J. Porterfield, Carleton Place. Somerville On Saturday evening the last call to pass on to the home beyond, came to one of our older and well respected citizens of our community in the person of Mrs. John T. Somerville, who for some time had been in falling health. Elizabeth Ann Rodger was the fourth child of Wm. Rodger and Jane Stewart and was born Nov. 1858, on the farm at Arklan where her brother D. S. Rodger now lives. On October 8th, 1890, she was united in marriage to John T. Somerville and they made their home in this community. To them were granted a family of six children, Jennie, Mrs. David McFarlane; Arthur, William, Rodger of Perth; Eric, Lanark; Ida C. of Lyons; Helen, Mrs. Alva Rintoul of Ramsay. Mrs. Somerville, while one of the busy home-loving kind, was a faithful, loving wife and mother, yet she always found time to attend those, causes which stand for the highest and best in community life, as long as her health permitted. She was a member for a number of years in the W.M.S., a member of the Ladies' Aid and for many years an active member of the W. I. We extend our sympathy to all those bereaved, the husband and the family, also her sisters, Isabella, Mrs. Wm. J. Affleck of Toronto; Mary, Mrs. Geo, Stead of Hopetown; Maud and a adopted sister, Mrs. M. Darling of New York, and one brother, David S. on the homestead. The funeral services were conducted on Tuesday afternoon by her pastor, Rev. J. C. Lowrie. Many floral tributes were in evidence from W.M.S., Hunters' Club, W. I. and friends and relatives. Gilmour Many friends and relatives were present, Sunday morning at the funeral of James Allan Gilmour, highly respected resident of Kingston, Ont., who died on Friday, January 1st, at the Kingston General Hospital. The funeral was held from his home, Princess Street, Kingston, Rev H.W. Cliff officiating at the service and also accompanying the funeral cortege by motor to Almonte, burial taking place in Auld Kirk Cemetery. A Masonic service was held at Mr Gilmour's late residence Saturday evening when full Masonic honours were accorded. Several members of the Order accompanied the remains to Almonte. The late Mr Gilmour was born at Almonte, 61 years ago, the son of Mrs Gilmour and the late Allan A. Gilmour. Although in failing health for some time, Mr Gilmour's death was sudden and his numerous friends were deeply shocked to hear of his passing. Surviving are his aged mother of Ottawa, his widow, Jennie Thurlow, one daughter, Miss Jean, one son George Allan of Kingston, also two sisters in Ottawa, Mrs J.A. McLachlin and Mrs J.W. Lockhart. Numerous telegrams and floral tributes were received testifying to the esteem in which Mr Gilmour was held. Many out-of-town friends were present at the funeral. She was in her 92nd year, and had been in failing health for some time past. Formerly Margaret Wylie Templeton, she was a daughter of the late Mr and Mrs James Templeton Sr., and was born on the 9th line of Ramsay. The last of seven children, she lived nearly all her life in Almonte, where she will be particularly well remembered. About 20 years ago she went to Ottawa to take up residence with her son-in-law and daughter, Mr and Mrs J.A. McLachlin, 380 Cooper Street, where she lived since. She attended Chalmers United Church and had many friends in the congregation as well as elsewhere. Predeceased by her husband 15 years ago, she was also predeceased by two sons, J. Lorne (Larry) Gilmour, and by her eldest son, James Allan Gilmour, of Kingston, who died six months ago. Surviving her are two daughters, Mrs J.A. McLachlin of Ottawa and Mrs John W. Lockhart of Aylmer road, and three grandchildren. The funeral service will conducted at the home, 380 Cooper Streeet, on Thursday at 1 pm by Rev W.R. Alp of Chalmers church. Gilmour, died today at the home of her son-in-law, J. A. McLachlin, 380 Cooper street. Mrs. Gilmour was in her 92nd year and made many friends in Ottawa since coming here 20 years ago. Her death also will be deeply mourned in the Almonte district. The former Margaret Wylie Templeton, she was a daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. James Templeton, pioneer residents of the Almonte District and was born in the ninth line, Ramsay, near Almonte. She resided in that district until coming to Ottawa. Her husband predeceased her 15 years ago and she also was predeceased by two sons. J. Lorne (Larry) Gilmour, a former widely known hockey star, and James Allan Gilmour of Kingston. Possessed with a charming personality, Mrs. Gilmour was beloved by all with whom she came in contact and was a prominent member of Chalmers United Church. She had been an invalid for three years. Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. J. A. McLachlin, well known philanthropic worker of Ottawa, and Mrs. John W. Lockhart, of Aylmer road, along with three grandchildren, George Allan Gilmour and Miss Jean Gilmour, of Kingston, and Robert Allan Gilmour, of Calgary. She was born in Ramsay township, daughter of James McQuarrie and his wife Katherine Leishman, pioneer settlers. Her husband Charles Miller died 23 years ago, Mrs Miller was a resident of town for over half a century. Although Mr McDougall had been in poor health for some time, his sudden passing came as a severe blow to the many members of the family, and as a shock to his many friends in the community. Deceased was born on the family homestead in the vicinity of Hopetown, the son of the late Mr Charles McDougall. He was in his 63rd year. Surviving are one brother Charles of Almonte, and two sisters, Mrs Jas Bowes of Watson's Corners and Mrs Hugh McMullen of Arnprior. On June 27th, 1906, Mr McDougall married Essie Sarah McKay, daughter of the late Mr and Mrs Wm McKay of Hall's Mills. Besides Mrs McDougall to mourn the parting of one who devoted his whole time and energy to making home life happy and congenial, he leaves two sons and nine daughters: Annie (Mrs T. Pierce) of Pakenham; Blanche of Perth; Lena and Clifford at home; Myrtle (Mrs F Mitchell) of Dewitt's Corners; Helen at Home; Audrey of Perth, and Muriel, Mabel, Doreen and Willard at home. The funeral was held from his late residence on Monday afternoon, services on Monday afternoon, services being conducted by Rev F.E. Rice of Blakeney. Interment was made at Auld Kirk Cemetery. The funeral was attended by scores of friends from the community and from outside points. Somerville On Sunday last the final respects of the neighbourhood were paid to our well respected citizen in the person of the late John T. Somerville, who was the eldest son of John Somerville and Catharine Ballantyne. John T., who lived the most of his life in this locality except for some time spent in lumber camps and in the early manhood years in railway construction, was Warden for a term. In politics he was a staunch Liberal and in religion an attendant of the former Congregational Church and afterward the United Church. In 1890 he was married to Elizabeth Ann Rodger who predeceased him in 1937. To them was born a family of six children: Jennie (Mrs. David McFarlane of Walton), Arthur of Toronto, W.R. of Perth, Eric of Lanark. Ida of Lyons, Helen (Mrs. Alva Rintoul) of Ramsay, The funeral service was held June 28 in the United Church. The Rev. S.. B. Smith conducted the service in the church and at the graveside, then the Masonic brethren conducted their funeral service. The casket was borne by six members of the order, Harry Mather, Robt. Stewart, Lionel Barr, Austin Manson, Evan G. McIlraith and Geo. B. Taylor. Many floral tributes decorated the graveside. Those of the family circle of deceased living are: Nellie; Mrs. Ed. Mrs Schoular was the former Miss Margaret McKay and was born in Lanark Township in 1862, a daughter of the late William McKay and his wife Ann Pretty, descendants of pioneers of that district. In June 1890, she married James Schoular and they resided in Arnprior for a time, coming to Almonte, 26 years ago. Mr Schoular died two years later. Surviving are three daughters and three sons, Mrs Harry Cameron of Arnprior; Miss Elizabeth Schoular of the teaching staff of the Almonte Public School; Miss Della Schoular of Almonte; William Schoular, C.P.R., Smiths Falls; James Schoular, of St Hyacinthe, Que; Alex Schoular of Almonte, and three sisters and four brothers, Mrs Duncan Hamilton of Carleton Place; Mrs William Dunlop, Union Hall; Mrs Peter McDougall of Blakeney; Alex McKay, Middleville; Daniel and George McKay, Arnprior, and Nelson McKay, Almonte. 1481 | 1944, Thursday November 9, The Almonte Gazette front page Former Almonte Resident Passes Andrew Dunlop Dies At Home Of Daughter In Carleton Place (Carleton Place Canadian) Mr Andrew Dunlop, an esteemed and well known resident of Carleton Place and Almonte, died at the home of his daughter, Mrs Wilbert J. Porterfield, Lake Avenue West on Wednesday of last week. Mr Dunlop was in his 90th year. The late Mr Dunlop was a man younger looking than his years and enjoyed good health until his illness which occurred on Saturday, October 28th. Up until that tie he was able to take his walks to the barber shop and enjoyed meeting and conversing with old and new friends whom he met from time to time. Mr Dunlop's passing is widely mourned by his friends throughout the whole district. Born In Scotland Born in Paisley Scotland, in 1855, a son of the late Mr and Mrs Andrew Dunlop, he came to Canada with his parents in 1870, and settled in Guelph, and later at Fergus, Ont. In 1872, the family moved to Almonte where Mr Dunlop entered the employ of the Rosamond Woolen Company. He remained there 49 years, 40 of them as overseer. In 1922 Mr Dunlop was forced to retire due to ill health. On September 4th 1878, Mr Dunlop was married to the former Miss Agnes Lindsay Gilmour, daughter of the late Mr and Mrs James Gilmour at the home of her parents on the 8th line of Ramsay, by the late Rev Mr. Lougheed In 1936 Mr and Mrs Dunlop came to visit with their sonin- law and daughter, Mr and Mrs W.J. Porterfield, and were only here a short time when Mrs Dunlop passed away, since which time Mr Dunlop has made his home in Carleton Place. An Old Citizen The late Mr Dunlop was one of Almonte's oldest and best known citizens and since coming to reside in this town had made a host of friends. He was well read and kept close contact with current events through his daily newspaper. The death of his young grandson, Flying Officer Andrew Porterfield, overseas, was an almost overwhelming blow from which Mr Dunlop never seemed to recover. As husband and father he had all the vicissitudes of the years with a brave heart and cheerful courage and it was always more natural of him to think of others than of himself. Mr Dunlop lived a full and well rounded life wit an abundance of philosophy and good humour that enabled him to endure a great deal and he leaves behind him a good name and the inspiration of a friendship that will be cherished by those who knew it. Prominent Mason During his long years of residence in Almonte, Mr. 'Dunlop was active in many of the town's affairs. He was a member of Bethany United Church and was deeply interested in its welfare. He was a member of Mississippi Lodge, A.F. & A.M. No. 147, Almonte, for 67 years and some time ago was given the 50-year veteran jewel and the Past Master's 50-year medal and was the oldest living member at the time of his death. Left to mourn are five daughters (Ethel) Mrs W.J. Porterfield, Carleton Place, (Gertrude) Mrs Harry Reynolds, Calgary, (Inez) Mrs Charles Lay, Toronto, (Olga) Mrs Arthur T. A short service was conducted at the home by Rev D.C. Munro, minister of Memorial Park United Church at 2 o'clock and the cortege then proceeded to Almonte for service at 2:30 at Bethany United Church by the minister Rev. W.J. Scott. Buried at Almonte Interment was made at the Auld Kirk Cemetery. The honorary pallbearers were: Messrs George Clement, W.C. Rintoul At the Rosamond Memorial Hospital on Thursday October 24th there passed peacefully away Jessie Jane Taylor, wife of the late Charles Henry Rintoul. Deceased had been in failing health for sometime and although the end was expected it came as a great shock to her loved ones. Born at Hopetown, Ontario, she was the daughter of the late John Taylor and Janet Browning. In 1899 she was united in marriage to Charles Henry Rintoul, of Tatlock, who predeceased her on their wedding anniversary, April 29th, 1912. In 1907 Mr and Mrs Rintoul and family moved from Tatlock to Ramsay to a farm then owned by the late Benjamin Hilliard where her two sons Alva and John now reside. In 1928 Mrs Rintoul moved to Carleton Place where she resided until the time of her death. The largely attended funeral was held from Fleming Bros Funeral Home Lake Avenue west and services were conducted by her minister Rev Donald Munroe of Memorial Park Church, assisted by Rev T. M. McCord. Interment was made in the family plot at the Auld Kirk Cemetery, Almonte. The pallbearers were nephews of the deceased: John McKay, Wm Munroe, Wm Rintoul, Alex Munroe, Archie Taylor and Roy Taylor. She leaves to mourn her loss four sons, John Alva and Charles of Carleton Place; Archie of Springfield, Mass., and one daughter Margaret of Toronto. A daughter Elsie predeceased her in 1914. The beautiful flowers were a token of the esteem felt for Mrs Rintoul by a large circle of relatives and friends. Among them were pieces from Carleton Place neighbours; Ramsay neighbours; Community Feed Stores, East Hampton, Mass.; Ontario Hog Producers' Assn; Employees Wilcox Canadian Ltd, the North Lanark Co-Operative, Almonte. She was born in Baildon, Yorkshire, on October 28, 1863, and came to this country with her parents at the age of 17 years. They settled in Appleton. She is survived by one son, Harry D. Gilmour, of Carleton Place, and one daughter, Eunice, Mr E.S. Turnbull, of Maplewood, N.J. The funeral will be held from the Patterson & Son Funeral Home, Lake avenue West, on Friday afternoon at two o'clock when the service will be conducted by Rev D.C. Munro. 1487 | 1948, Thursday January 15, The Almonte Gazette page 4 Mrs Robert Giles The funeral of the late Mrs. Robt. W. Giles was held on Tuesday afternoon, Jan. 13th, from the family residence, Malcolm Street, to the Auld Kirk Cemetery. Services were conducted by Rev. H. C. Wolfraim, pastor of Bethany United Church, of which she was a member. Mrs. Giles was ill only a week and died in her 66th year on Sunday morning. Jan. 11th. The funeral was largely attended by relatives and friends. Two favorite hymns of deceased were sung: "What A Friend We Have In Jesus," and "Abide With Me." The pallbearers were, Thomas Barclay, Harvey Scott, James Edmonds, Ernest Adams, Delmer Johnson and Morris Turner, the first five neighbours of the family. Among the many floral tributes were pieces from Textile Union No ? 104; Weaving Dept., Rosamond Woolen Co. Ltd.. and the Car Dept. C.P.R., Smiths Falls. Among those who attended from a distance were friends from Ottawa, Smiths Falls, Carleton Place, Pakenham and Renfrew. The late Mrs. Giles was the former Jean Edith McArthur, a daughter of the late Stephen McArthur and his wife, Mary Turner of Ramsay Township. She was married to Robt. Giles on July 26th, 1904. He survives her together with five daughters and two sons, Namely, Mrs. Rae (Florence); Mrs. E. Baird (Laura); Mrs. Norman Sadler, (Jean); and Miss Mary of Almonte; Mrs. W. J. Carpenter (Eleanor), Smiths Falls; Ernest and Allan of Almonte. Twins, a son and daughter, predeceased her. There are also three sisters and two brothers ? Mrs. James Paterson (Jessie), Ramsay; Mrs. Reuben Giles (Bertha) and Miss Ethel of Blakeney; Archie and Stephen, Blakeney. Two sisters and one brother predeceased her, Mary, Elizabeth and John. There are 10 grandchildren. Mrs. Giles' greatest interest was in her home. 1488 | 1949, Thursday April 21, The Almonte Gazette front page Miss Agnes Paul The death occurred at Perth on Monday, April 18, of Miss Agnes Paul following a lengthy period of failing health. She was born 79 years ago, the youngest daughter of the late William Paul and his wife, Jane Simpson, who lived on the 7th line of Ramsay Township. Except for a few years spent in Western Canada with her sister, all her life was spent in this district. She was the last member of her immediate family, two sisters and one brother having passed away many years ago. Surviving are two nieces, Mrs A.G. Naismith, Mrs Ed Rose and Mr Melville Paul and a niece and three nephews in Western Canada. The funeral was held on Wednesday afternoon from the home of Mr A.G. Naismith. Rev H.C. Nontell The death occurred in Ottawa on Tuesday Sept 6th at the home of her daughter, Mrs Kirby Chamberlain, of Elizabeth Gemmill, widow of Stewart L. Nontell in her 98th year. The funeral will be held Friday afternoon and interment will be made in the Auld Kirk Cemetery. She is survived by her daughter, Mrs Chamberlain and a son Percy of Ottawa. Another son, Roy of Almonte, died some years ago. The family lived originally on the 10th line of Ramsay near the half-way crossing. 1491 | 1950, Thursday May 18, The Almonte Gazette front page Mr Geo M. Gemmill Mr Geo M. Gemmill passed away in the Rosamond Memorial Hospital on Wednesday, May 17, at the age of 62 years. Mr Gemmill had been ill for the past three months, two months of which time he spent in Ottawa Civic Hospital. He was taken suddenly worse about 7 p.m. on Wednesday and passed away about 11 p.m. The funeral will be held on Monday, May 22, at 2.30 p.m., from the Comba Funeral Home to the Auld Kirk Cemetery. Gemmill The funeral was held from the Comba Funeral Home on Monday afternoon of one of Almonte's well-known citizens, George M. Gemmill who died in the Rosamond Memorial Hospital on Wednesday evening. He was 62 years of age and while he had been in rather poor health for some time the end came suddenly. Mr Gemmill was a son of the late Mr and Mrs John Gemmill and after serving his apprenticeship in the dry goods store of the late A.J. McAdam, for some years he operated a ladies' wear and dry goods store later selling out to his partner, Mr W. Taber of Carleton Place. Of late years he was on the staff of N.S. Lee & Son, hardware merchants. The late Mr Gemmill was an enthusiastic bowler and curler and at the time of his death was President of the Almonte Lawn Bowling Club. His wife, the former Robena Mae Willoughby predeceased him many years ago. Left to mourn his passing is a son, Arthur, of Ottawa and a brother, Robert of Fort William, both of whom were present for the funeral. Attending also from Ottawa were Mr George Willoughby, Miss Myrtle and Mrs and Mrs Graydon Willoughby and children. Funeral services were conducted at the Comba Funeral Home and the grave by Rev H.L. Morrison of Trinity United Church assisted by Rev H.C. Wolfraim of Bethany United Church. Interment was in the Auld Kirk Cemetery. Pallbearers were Messrs J.E. Lindsay, F.A.C. Darling, J.D. McCallum, J.H. Martin, N.S. Lee and Derward Washburn. Mr Gemmill was a man of quiet disposition who attended to his own affairs and never was known to say unkind things about other people. 1492 | 1953, Thursday June 4 The Renfrew Mercury Deaths. Page 2 Mrs. M. Aikenhead dies in 95th year, buried in Almonte. A resident of Renfrew for the past sixteen years and well loved by all who knew her, Mrs. Matthew Aikenhead died at the home of her son, William on Friday, May 28, 1953 after an illness of several months. She was in her 95th year, but took a very active interest in local affairs. Mrs. Aikenhead was born in the Township of Drummond on June 6, 1858, the daughter of George Blair and Mary McIlquham. She lived there for some years before moving to Almonte. She also lived in Pa(c)kenham before coming to Renfrew for the last sixteen years of her life. A member of the United Church, Mrs.Aikenhead was always very active in church work during her lifetime. She married Matthew Aikenhead in Drummond in 1890. He predeceased her in 1924. The funeral took place from McPhail & Perkins Funeral Home on Sunday, May 31st, 1953 where service was conducted by Rev C.G. Ward at 2 p.m. Interment took place at Auld Kirk Cemetery, Almonte. Well known in Almonte and Pa(c)kenham District, Mrs. Matthew Aikenhead died at the home of her son William Aikenhead, Renfrew druggist on Friday May 29th. At 95 she still took a keen interest in both local and world events and had been ill for only two months. Mrs. Aikenhead was the former Rebecca Blair ad was born in Drummond Township, daughter of the late George Blair and his wife Mary McIlquham. Following her marriage to Matthew Aikenhead in 1890 she and her husband farmed in Almonte district until his death 29 years ago. Since then she lived with her son, first at Pa(c)kenham and then in Renfrew for the past 16 years. She was a member of the United Church and was an active worker in various church organizations during her lifetime. Besides her son she is survived by one daughter, Mary of Toronto, and a brother, Samuel Blair of Duluth, Minnesota, three grandchildren and seven great grandchildren. Rodger The funeral service was held at the Comba Funeral Home on Tuesday afternoon, March 1st, at one p.m., of James Miller Rodger who died at his residence, Country Street, on Sunday, Feb 27th, in his 69th year. Mr Rodger had been in ill health for the past two years. James Miller Rodger was born at Middleville in 1886, a son of the late James Rodger and his wife, Ellen Miller. He was married 47 years ago to the former Miss Harriett McKay of Galbraith who survives together with two sons and two daughters, namely: Thomas Mckay (Mac) and Roy of Almonte; Ella (Mrs Wm Andrews) and (Annie) Mrs David Andrews both of Almonte. There is also a brother, William of Almonte; three sisters, Jessie, Mrs Chas Ramsbottom of Smiths Falls; Eva, Mrs Wm Rintoul of Innisville; Edna, Mrs Wm Woods of Lanark, and nine grandchildren. Mr Rodger was a farmer nearly all his life. First, as a young man he farmed in the Galbraith section and later on the 9th line of Ramsay Township where Mr John Brydges now lives and until he retired eleven years ago, on the farm occupied by his son, Roy, on the 9th line. The Rev Jas M. Ritchie of Almonte Presbyterian Church officiated and the remains were placed in the Auld Kirk Cemetery vault. The pallbearers were Messrs W.A. Metcalfe, Jas Metcalfe, John R. 1494 | 1956, Thursday August 30, The Carleton Place Canadian front page Flt Lt R. Gilmour Died Suddenly Thursday In Winnipeg WINNIPEG, August 24 ? Flight Lieutenant Ronald A. Gilmour, 44, died Thursday in Deer Lodge Hospital. Born in Vancouver, he attended school at Almonte, Ont, and enlisted in the RCAF at Ottawa, in 1929 as an apprentice airman. In 1936 he received his wings as an NCO pilot and in 1939 he received his commission. During the Second World War he served at many air force stations in Canada and overseas. He was a Staff Officer Air Training at RCAF's 14 Training Group Headquarters in Winnipeg from February, 1952 until his death. F/L Gilmour is survived by his parents, Mr and Mrs H.D. Gilmour, Carleton Place; his wife Adelaide, and four children, Barten, 17, Wendy 15, Terrence, 13, and Christopher, 9 of 431 Moorgate, Winnipeg; two brothers, Victor, with the RCAF at St Sylvestre, Que, and Dawson of Peterborough; and four sisters, Mrs Gordon Erratt, Vancouver, Mrs Charles Godfrey, Carleton Place, and Mrs N. Mahara, and Mrs John Coulter, of Ottawa. A Military service was conducted at the Protestant Chapel at RCAF Station Winnipeg, at 3 p.m. on Saturday. The body arrived in Carleton Place on Monday and the funeral took place from the Alan R. Barker Funeral Home, McArthur avenue, to Memorial Park United Church. Service was conducted jointly by Rev H. Giffin and Flt Lt the Rev H.F. Currie. Interment was made in the Auld Kirk Cemetery, Almonte. The Carleton Place Legion conducted service at the graveside. Honourary pallbearers from the RCAF Station Uplands were Flt Lts W.C. Craile, O.M. Alier, A.W. Nelson, S.L. Poulin, W.B. Adair and J.W. Stants. Honour guard, under Lew Harthen, Legion President, consisted of Doug Lancaster, Ernie Halliday, G.W. 1495 | 1957, Thursday March 14, The Canadian, Carleton Place page 8 Frank Dunlop Dies In Ottawa Frank Rodman Dunlop, 116 Carling avenue, Ottawa, worker for many years with the Central Canada Exhibition Association and the Canadian Legion, died in hospital Thursday after a short illness. Mr Dunlop married the former Mabel Jean Cowan, who survives, in 1945 Also surviving are one son, Andrew Frank, at home; one brother, Russell Dunlop, Calgary, and three sisters, Mrs Charles H. Lay, (Inez), Toronto, (Roberta) Mrs Gordon Brown, Toronto, and (Olga) Mrs Arthur Roberts, Eesplain, Ill. Rev Dr J Legan-Vencta of St Giles Presbyterian Church conducted the funeral services at 1.30 p.m. Saturday in the Veitch-Draper chapel, 458 Parkdale avenue. Interment was in Auld Kirk. The late Mr Dunlop was a brother of Mrs Wilbert J. Porterfield Lake avenue west, and visited here quite frequently. His father, the late Mr Andrew Dunlop resided here for some years with his son-in-law and daughter, Mr and Mrs Poterfield, and was well known. Gilmour, who died at the age of 73 years. A prominent building contractor in the Ottawa Valley, Harry Dawson Gilmour passed away in the Civic Hospital, May 4th in his 73rd year. Born in Appleton, the oldest son of the late A.C. Gilmour, contractor, and his wife, Susan Coultas. He lived in Almonte where he was educated and went into partnership with his father. He was married in Vancouver in 1909 to the former Rose Isabel Gammons of Hasting, Minn., niece of Mrs L.W. Shipman. They returned to live in Almonte where Mr Gilmour enlisted in the 130th Battalion and served overseas for three years in the First World War, being wounded and gassed at Vimy Ridge. He is survived by his wife, four daughters, Mrs Gordon Erratt, (Hazel) of Vancouver; Mrs Charles Godfrey (Rosamond), Carleton Place; Mrs N.S. Mahara (Kathleen) and Mrs J.F. Coulter (Marjorie), both of Ottawa. Two sons, Sgt Victor Gilmour, R.C.A.F., St. Sylvester, Que, and Dawson Gilmour, Peterborough. Also eight grandchildren. The one remaining member of his family is a sister, Mrs Stanley Turnbull (Eunice) of New York. He was a member of Memorial Park United Church, Carleton Place. The funeral service was conducted by Rev H.N. Giffin, from the Allan R. Barker Funeral Home, Carleton Place. Interment was in the Auld Kirk Cemetery, Almonte. 1497 | 1964, Thursday May 14, The Almonte Gazette page 8 William S. Rodger The death occurred suddenly on Monday, May 4th of Mr Wm S. Rodger of Almonte. Mr Rodger who was in his 83rd year was working in his garden when he suffered a severe heart attack. He had been a resident of Almonte for the past 35 years. Until his retirement about five years ago, he served as a rural mail carrier. Mr Rodger was born at Middleville, the son of the late Mr and Mrs James H. Rodger. Of a family of 8, two sisters survive, Eva, Mrs Wm Rintoul of Drummond and Edna, Mrs Robert Woods of Ashton. Mr Rodger was twice married. His first wife, Caroline Somerville, died in 1935. His second wife, Susan Parker died in 1950. He is survived by one daughter, Ethel, Mrs Harry Metcalfe of Almonte; a step-daughter, Lorna, Mrs Desse Brown on Montreal and three grand-children, Rae Metcalfe of Ottawa, Bob and Cindy Metcalfe of Almonte. The funeral was held on Wednesday from the Comba Funeral Home with interment in the Auld Kirk Cemetery. The Reverend D. Leslie Elder conducted the service. One sister survives, Jean (Mrs Hilton Thompson). In 1929 he married Liala Somerville, who is left to mourn along with two daughters, Margaret and Irene (Mrs Mervyn Mitchell), and one son, Harvey. She had been a resident of the nursing home for ten years. Previously Mrs Rodger resided on Country street. Mrs Rodger was born at Hall's Mills on October 5th, 1886, a daughter of Thomas McKay and Annie Rintoul. She was married in March, 1908, at Middleville, to the late James M. Rodger. She was a member of Almonte Presbyterian Church. Surviving are one son, Roy, and a daughter, Annie, Mrs David Andrews, both of Almonte; two brothers, Welland and Charles McKay, and two sisters, Mrs John R. Reid and Mrs William Mealy of Brandon, Manitoba. The funeral was held from the Comba Funeral Home, Church street, at 2 p.m. on Friday, December 8th, with burial at Auld Kirk Cemetery. Mr Giles was born in Ramsay Township on October 24, 1875, a son of the late Adonijah Giles and wife Margaret Evans. He was married in 1903 to the former Jean McArthur who predeceased him in 1948 Surviving are two sons, Ernest and Allan and five daughters, Mrs N.T. Sadler (Jean), Mrs Rae (Florence), Mrs Baird (Laura), all of Almonte, Mrs F. Obrey (Mary) of Rnefrew and Mrs W.J. Carpenter (Eleanor) of Smiths Falls and 18 great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by twins, a son and daughter. Also surviving are three sisters: Mrs W. Elliott (Minnie) of Sonningdale, Sask, Mrs B. Traill (Ada) of Smiths Falls and Mrs E. Rankin (Eva) of Ottawa. Two brothers, Edward and Reuben and one sister, Elizabeth predeceased him and two half brothers, Findlay Gordon and William Gordon. The funeral was held from the Kerry Funeral Home, Elgin Street, on Saturday, September 5, 1970, with burial in the Auld Kirk Cemetery, Rev Robert McCrea of Almonte United Church conducted the service.
