1258 | 11th - Alexander Barber, a workman in the woollen mill of Moorehouse, Dodds & Co., at Glen Tay, near Perth, Ont., is caught in the machinery of the mill and torn to pieces. source not known. Perth Courier, 14 Nov 1879 Local Affairs Horrible Accident at Glen Tay - A Man Torn to Pieces on a Revolving Shaft On Tuesday morning last, the people of Perth were shocked to hear that an employee in the Glen Tay Woolen Mill, named Alexander Barber had been killed while working in the mill. Further particulars showed that the accident was attended with unusual details. It seemed that the deceased had stepped upon a soap barrel to sew up the small belt connectiong the small governor of the water-wheel with the main shaft, which was fixed about eighteen inches from the ceiling above, and in the basement of the building. The top of the barrel being greasy, his foot slipped and to save himself from falling reached out his hand to grasp the main shaft, which was turning at the rate of 119 revolutions per minute. Instantly his shirt was caught up by the shaft, which drew both it and him around it and hurled his body with tremendous force against the floor above. The blow knocked a hole clean through the floor, and no doubt killed the victim almost instantly. The mutilated body revolved with the shaft with un diminished velocity, each time striking the floor and shattering both body and floor at each revolution. Meantime the accident had thrown the controlling machinery out of gear and it was found impossible to stop the water-wheel by the ordinary method and as a last resort the water was shut off at the gatehead. The machinery then grdually stopped as the water supply diminished, and at last after the body had been carried around the shaft many hundred times, the motion ceased and the mangled corpse taken down. The remains then presented a sickening spectacle. Both hands and feet had been torn off and thrown some distance. The head was bruised and crushed out of all shape and the body generally was broken and torn apart. Bones wer found driven into the floor above and all over. Flesh, liquid adn bones were strewn about. Alone in the weaving room the looms near the hole in the floor were be-splattered with blood. No wonder those who witnessed the site turned sick with horror. The burial took place the next day and was attended by a very large concourse of friends and neighbours. Mr. Barber was a popular and respected employee in the factory. He was extremely well behaved and had no enemies. He leaves a widow and six children (incorrect, Three children and wife Janet was expecting their fourth child), and a large number of relatives in the village to mourn his terrible death. An inquest was held on the remains by Dr. Hendra, coroner, and a verdict of 'accidental death' was returned. | Barber, Alexander (I1641)

1273 | 14 Mar 1930 Harold Ashby Killed Instantly page 8 column 4 Perth Courier Near Fallbrook Thursday Morning When Thrown from Wagon Sudden gloom was cast over Fallbrook and district on Thursday morning of this week when the sad news quickly spread that Harold Ashby, 14 years, son of Mr. and Mrs. James Ashby, had been almost instantly killed shortly after eight o'clock when he was thrown from a wagon load of railway ties into the ditch. He was driving a team of horses attached to the wagon when some of the ties began to slip and frightened the horses which ran away and young Ashby was thrown off into the ditch sustaining injuries which resulted in his death in about three minutes. Mr. Ralph Walroth was the only witness of the sad tragedy and rushed to the boy's assistance but found life extinct. The boys parents were notified and also Dr. Strang of Lanark, and Dr. Dwyre, Coroner, of Perth, the latter, after learning the circumstances; deciding than an inquest would be unnecessary as the boys death was accidental. 1292 | 17th Earl of Crawford, 10th Lord Lindsay of the Byres, 1st Earl of Lindsay, Treasurer of Scotland and President of Parliament. When his father died in 1616, he was named the 10th Lord Lindsay of the Byres. He was created Earl of Lindsay in 1633. He became the Earl of Crawford when his cousin, Ludovic Lindsay, 16th Earl of Crawford, forfeited in November 1652 (under the Earldom of Crawford terms of the 1641/2 regrant). In 1644, he became Treasurer of Scotland. In 1645, he became President of Parliament. He was basically a was basically a moderate Presbyterian "Engager", but played a complex role, during the Wars of the Three Kingdoms. At the Battle of Marston Moor, he fought for the army of the Scots Parliament and against General Montrose, a royalist, at the Battle of Kilsyth, and was eventually captured by the English at Alyth. In 1647, he changed sides and signed the "engagement" for the release of Charles I. He lost all his offices when the Marquess of Argyll obtained the upper hand. He regained his influence in Scottish politics after the defeat of the Scots at the Battle of Dunbar in 1650; however, from 1651 to 1660 he was a prisoner in England after his capture at Alyth in an incident known as 'the Onfall of Alyth'. He was restored to his former dignities in 1661, but his refusal to abjure the covenant compelled him to resign them two years later. | Lindsay, John Ist Earl Lindsay, Lord Parbroath, 17th Earl of Crawford, 10th Lord of Byres (I70792)

1294 | 18. George Bruce "Bruce" Brown (1864-1923) (Charlotte Gow 3, Jennett Ferrier 2, John Ferrier, Sr. 1) was born on 14 Aug 1864 in Otonabee Twp, Peterborough County, Ontario, Canada and died on 31 Dec 1923 in Cranbrook, East Kootenay District, British Columbia, Canada at age 59. He was usually called Bruce. He had no known marriage and no known children. Death Notes: Well known Figure in City Business Life Passes Away G.B. Brown Succumbs to Attack of Pleurisy. Interment at Vancouver On New Year's Eve there passed away at the St. Eugene hospital one of Cranbrook's old-timers in the person of Mr. George Bruce Brown. He had been identified with the business interests of Cranbrook for approximately twenty years and was well and favorably known among a large circle of friends in Cranbrook and the Crows Nest Pass. "Bruce" as he was familiarly known, was really a western pioneer. A native of Peterboro, Ontario, he was one among the many easterners making the rush to the Klondyke in the early days. Following his return to Winnipeg, where he worked as a traveller for the G.B.Wood Co.,for a time , going thence to Rossland, where he was employed. About eighteen years ago he came to Cranbrook and entered the employ of the J.D. McBride Hardware Co. About 1910 he spent a short time in Fernie as bookkeeper for the J.D. Quail Hardware Co., also with shepherd & Elliot of the same city. He returned to Cranbrook to work with the new firm of Wasson & Parks in 1911 and was engaged with that firm and its successor, F. Parks & Co., ever since. For the last fourteen years Mr. Brown had made his home with Mr. and Mrs. F. Wasson. He was of a quiet, retiring disposition, and did not take any active part in lodge or club affairs, but was a valuable member of the Cranbrook Retail Merchants Association, representing his firm, and acting for a time as secretary. He was taken ill on Christmas Eve, but it was Christmas Day before it was realized his trouble was serious. On the 26th he was removed to the hospital, and though it was thought his chances of recovery were good, he passed peacefully away on New Year's Eve at about 8 p.m., a victim of pleural pneumonia, which his system was too weak to throw off. The late Mr. Brown is survived by his father, who resides with a sister, Mrs Whitney, at Collingwood St., Vancouver. Colin C. Brown is one of two brothers also residing in Vancouver, and another brother, Jack, resides in Seattle. The funeral took place from the undertaking parlours on Wednesday, previous to the departure of the train for Vancouver, where the body was shipped for interment. Rev. E.W. MacKay officiated at the brief service held here. Deceased was a familiar figure in the business life of the city, and will be much missed in the counsels of the merchants when matters relating to their interests are brought up. He was in his sixtieth year and unmarried.
