On 23rd July 1745 Prince Charles Edward Stuart, son of James 'The Old Pretender' landed on the Isle of Eriskay off the west coast of Scotland. This was the start of the 'Forty-Five' Jacobite Rebellion. The following events culminated in the last major battle to be fought on British soil? Culloden.

1688?tab?Nov?tab?'The Glorious Revolution'. Following the invasion from Holland by William of Orange, James II, the Catholic King of England, Wales, Scotland and Ireland, flees to France.

The house of Hanover, which ruled Great Britain from 1714, owes its claim to this act.
6 Sept?tab?Death of the deposed James II. Louis XIV of France recognises his son as James III, later known as the 'Old Pretender'.
1708?tab?23 March?tab?A French naval squadron attempted unsuccessfully to land the Old Pretender on the Firth of Forth near Edinburgh.

18 Dec?tab?Arguably the last 'battle' to take place on English soil, the Clifton Moor Skirmish saw the retreating Jacobites meet the Duke of Cumberland's forces at Clifton in Penrith. Twelve Jacobites and fourteen of the Duke's men were killed, with the English being buried in the Clifton churchyard and the Scots under an oak tree (known locally as the Rebel Tree), where a plaque still remains.
Jacobite Battle HUK

1746?tab?17 Jan?tab?Back in Scotland the Jacobites fail to capture Stirling Castle, but then defeat General Henry Hawley's army at the Battle of Falkirk Muir.
18 Feb?tab?Withdrawing ever further north, the Jacobites capture Inverness. They stay there for 2 months. Meanwhile a government army, led by the king's younger son, Prince William Duke of Cumberland, was catching them up.
16 April?tab?Against the advice of his chiefs, Charles lined up the Jacobite army ? hungry and tired ? on the flat moor of Culloden. It was to be the last major battle fought on British soil. In less than an hour Cumberland's cannon destroyed the military threat of Jacobitism.

James son George Blair 1800 married Jane Jean Bateson 1802.

Margaret Kelso Mrs. John Munro ? her niece Janet McDonald married Robert Bateson 1825 and his parents were William Bateson 1804 and Janet Sinclair who in 1851 are living beside George Blair and wife Jean Bateson.
Jean Bateson 1802 Blair is sister of William Bateson 1804. Also with them is Isabella Blair born 1773 and so safe bet that Isabella is wife, widow of James Blair Lanark Society Settler dead by 1834 who came out in 1820.

?i?Info sent by Harold Miller, son of George F. Millar N. Townanda NY NS and Barbara Millar, Elma NY, Harold's neice. Apparently
Barbara gathered some of her info from Mrs. Horace C. Park of Atikokan ON, a village north of Rainy River ON. She was a grandaughter of John Miller and Margaret Blair. Her maiden name was Elizabeth Miller. Mrs. Park has her grandfather's bible. There is a date 1826 but no reference to its meaning. She stated that John Miller came to Canada in the early 1800s from the vicinity of Glasgow. He married Margaret Blair in Lanark ON.
A great deal of information on the girls and their families was gathered by Mrs. Jean Johnson, Prescott ON 1977-78. She is the granddaughter of David and Susan, her parents Ida E. Miller and Robert Innes.?/i?

My research starts with Robert Blair and Jonet Caldwell. I have not found documentation, yet, so am still looking.

But, they had a son, named George, who was born in 1698, in Kinnard Parish. His Birth is documented in Scotland Births and Baptisms, 1564-1950 Indexing C11562-2, GS Film # 1041056.
Blair, George (I4113)

427 (Research):?b?The Rev. David Mackay?/b?, was the minister of the parish upwards of half a century. Amid the varied trials he was called to bear during a life of eighty-four, and a ministry of more than fifty-one years, the word of God was his support. Perhaps the most remarkable feature in his character was the interest he took in young men of talent, and unwearied efforts he made to bring them forward from humble life, to stations of usefulness and respectability.

The land-owners of this parish are; Sir John Gordon Sinclair of Murkle, Bart., the Duke of Sutherland; Major Innes of Sandside; James Sinclair of Forss; and ?b?Captain Macdonald of Shebster.?/b?

From a family history entitled "The Millar Family in Canada" by Hilda Geddes:
"James Millar was born in Paisley, Scotland and came to Canada around 1840. He was accompanied by sisters Jeanie, Catherine and Margaret; his brother, Tom; another sister, widow Vera Ferguson and her two sons, James and Thomas."

James apparently born in Barony, Scotland, now swallowed up by Glasgow.
"JAMES MILLAR left this Broomalaw on the 18th. of April 1840 and sailed from Greenock. On the 27th. April 1840, was wrecked at sea after being 10 days out and finally landed at Quebec on the 13th. July,1840. James Millar copied exactly from his father's Reciner.(diary) This noted while at Sr.J's checked by me at Millar Block,North Battleford, Sask.-Visiting D Sr's father Grandpa-William Millar. Aug.-Sept.1930. Copied by Pauline E.W. (Johnson) Millar. Wife of Dr. Delbert John Millar. Aug.-Sept. 1930." Found on Internet family tree - unknown contact is obviously descendant of James Millar, but name not provided.
From "The Millar Family in Canada" by Hilda Geddes:"James Millar was born in Paisley, Scotland and came to Canada around 1840. He was accompanied by sisters Jeanie, Catherine and Margaret; his brother, Tom; another sister, widow Vera Ferguson and her two sons, James and Thomas."
Township of Palmerston, Lot 10 Concession 10, patent March 3 1854 from Crown to James Millar for E 1/2. Various other family dealings with the property over the years: Deed May 23, 1883 to Thomas Millar and wife from Elizabeth Shevlin (James' wife remarried name); Deed Aug 24 1891 to Canada Lumber Co from William Millar; B & S Dec 14 1899 from Elizabeth Shevlin to James Millar; B & S July 31 1902 from James Miller to Isaac Allan; Last Will dated Dec 18 1899 reg'd May 21 1903 Elizabeth Shevlin to Son William Miller; B & S Jun 1 1914 William Miller to Delbert Woods.
According to "Places in Ontario: Their Name Origins and History", on p. 161 re Palmerston township in Frontenac County "Palmerston Townshipis located in the northeast of Frontenac County, bordered by Lanark County to the east and Calrendon township to the west. It is bisected from west to east by the Mississippi River. It was named after the Third Viscount, Lord Palmerston. The land was opened up in 1822 and the survey completed in 1861. As the area is Canadian Shield and unsuited for agriculture, settlement was much later than in the south of the County. The first settlers who were mainly transient lumbermen and their families, had to blaze trails through the bush as there were no roads. Among the first permanent settlers were Mr. and Mrs. James Millar in 1846. In 1859 the completion of the Snow Road opened up the southeastern part of the township and in 1862 the first school was built at the village of Snow Road with William Hannah as the teacher. Snow Road grew in importance with the opening of a station on the new Kingston and Pembroke Railway in 1883. Among the early industries were the production of maple syrup, mixed farming, lumbering, and iron products from the Robertsville Iron Mining Company. Today tourism is the main industry, especially around Ompah on the shore of Trout Lake (now Palmerston Lake).Palmerston is united for municipal purposes with North and South Canonto. The combined permanent population of these townships is less than 500."
From "The Canadian Mississippi River" by Hilda Geddes, at p. 84-85: "The hamlet of Snow Road is situated on the north side of Millar's Lake, on Highway 509, in Palmerston township...In the early days the hub of Snow Road was the station area where the general store and post office were also located....Snow Road was a busy spot during the 1920s and '30s. Pulpwood was being shipped by the farmers from as far away as Watson's Corners. It was hauled by horses and sleighs, coming up Dalhousie Lake on the ice, up the Hydro hill, up the Mississippi River to Baflour's turn and thence to the station at Snow Road. It was common to see as many as 50 or more teams coming in hauling pulpwood and various other types of wood. Needless to say, there was pulpwood piled all over the place. This pulpwood was later loaded into box cars and shipped out on the K. and P. to both Canadian and foreign destinations. Maple syrupwas another large export every spring...There was more syrup shipped from Snow Road than anywhere else in the Dominion of Canada."
From the book "The Centenary of the Presbyterian Church of Canada, 1875-1975, Historical Sketch of McDonalds Corners, Snow Road and Elphin", Page 62: Mrs. Jas. Lett Remembers--Mr. and Mrs. Millar were the first owners of her farm--being given a crown deed by John Playfair in 1846. Two families have owned this farm, Millars and Letts, except for4years when it was farmed but not occupied. ............ Hugh Adams and Jas. Millar traded farms because Mrs. Adams was afraid of the Indians who camped nearby at the "Green Landing", or what was then known as"The Indian Lot". "Page 84 says the land was registered March 20, 1858.
Quoted from The Perth Courier, August 7, 1936: "THE HISTORY of SNOW ROAD and McLAREN'S DEPOT. A paper prepared and read by Miss Maude Walker at the July meeting of the Snow Road Women's Institute: This locality was known by the name of Palmerston in its early days, which is the name of the township unto the present day. The first white settler was Robert Wilson, who came in about the year 1833, but the Indians were hostile towards him and he didn't want to stay.
James Millar and his brother Thomas were next to come in 1840. James Millar traded his farm in Sherbrooke with Mr. Wilson, as he was friends with the Indians and they did not molest him. Mr. Millar's descendants lived on the same farm until the year 1914. James Lett is the present owner......"
James drowned in the Mississippi River while delivering mail.
James was first buried at the Green Landing in Snow Road, and was later moved to the Crawford Cemetery, McDonalds Corners, Ontario, cemetery plot #83.

Hi Donald Alexander (& John),
I believe we are 4th cousins and our common ancestor is Janette Miller who married John "Jock" Callander and later James Brownlee near North Gower Ontario.
I would love to connect with you and confirm the relationship.

Hi Diane, I am glad you wrote and glad to make your acquaintance! . My younger brother, Jack, (legal name John) has lived and worked in the Whitby Ontario area since 1969, and he is the person who set up and monitors this web site. He has done a lot of work on it!! I just look at it once in awhile, and make a few additions as they come to me. My Dad's mother was a Callander and I wish I had recorded information about family from when I was a a little guy. I know my family on my Dad's came from southern Ontario area, and my brother Jack would know the connections. I will let him know you wrote and hopefully you can connect with him. He is a great guy! :) I live on the west coast on Vancouver Island, in Nanaimo. We grew up on Grandpa Ballard's farm in southwestern Manitoba, and I moved west in 1974. Jack went to McMaster University and stayed - his career was with Ontario Hydro. TC, Don

Hi Donald,
The Callanders originally settled near North Gower, just on the edge of Ottawa but were Lanark Society Settlers in Dalhousie/Lanark Township before that, arriving in 1820-21 with the Miller family members. I have just recently tracked Janet (Janette) who married John Callander and have much of her family history detail as she was a daughter of William Miller and Margaret Burns. Her brother George married Helen Mason my 2x great grandparents.
My husband and I lived near or in Almonte most of our married lives and I was born in Perth, Ontario. Long story but we traveled for four years in a motorhome and then in 2012, settled in Calgary near one of our sons. I am excited to make contact as you are the first from Janette's family line.
I forgot to include my email address. dianeduncan01@gmail.com. Please pass it on to John. I hope he will make contact and among us we can share some details from our research. I find it easier to work with direct emails so that we can attach files etc. Hoping you and John will share yours as well.
Diane

?/i?One day in 1853, two sons of Andrew Baird of Lanark Co., in Ontario came to the end of a hard day of laying a stone fence. Charles put a heavy stone in place and then told his brother it would be the last stone he would lay. With emphasis he declared, 'I am going to look for a farm where they don't have stones.'. True to his word, a few days later he asked hisfather for some money to enable him to visit some of their former neighbours who had located in Perth Co. ....

Religious Society of Friends - 'Quakers or Friends'?/i?
Belief in seeking guidance from God directly. Written credal statements limit the interpretation of God and with the passage of time, statements no longer are helpful or relevant. This leads to an atittude of mind that brands questioning of accepted ideas as unbelief, without which progress is impossible.
Belief in the honesty, integrity, and the equality of men and women
Belief that war is inconsistent with spirit and teachings of Christ.

from 1642-1649, England experienced civil war waged over a desire to increase the powers of Parliament and for religious freedom. At that time wages were falling and the poor were being victimized.

George Fox (1624-1691) Leicestershire England came from a Presbyterian background and was the leader of the movement. He began preaching in 1647.

The first meeting was held in England in 1652 and in Ireland in 1654. By about 1666, the yearly and quaterly meetings were extended to include Ireland.

Seven hundred Quakers were imprisoned under Richard Cromwell in 1861 (?). George Fox was imprisoned in 1662. The Act of Tolerance, aimed at ending persecution, was pased in 1689.

Battle of Boyne 1690

Rebellion against English rule in Ireland 1690.

?/i?
Andrew Wallace (died about 1844) and his wife Ellen Fulton (1785-1872) were natives of Scotland. About 1820, with their family of 3 children, they left their home in the vicinity of Dumbarton, Scotland, (Stirling??) as emigrants for Canada.

They trekked down to Glasglow but due to bad weather, they had to wait for a boat. They made camp on the river bank of Greenock. During the wait, the youngest child died and they buried him ont he banks of the river. They sailed from Greenock in an old battle ship that had been sunk, it was said, during the Napoleonic Wars and later raised and used as a transport for emigrants. Storms and adverse winds made the voyage a tedious one of several weeks duration. Ellen Fulton was pregnant and due to those rough seas, lost the baby.

They left this vessel at Quebec (instead of Montreal, again due to poor weather) and came up the St. Lawrence River in batteaux, as far as Prescott. From hence they trekked overland to Perth and into Dalhousie Township, Lanark County, where they settled on land bought from the Government. The family reached this their new home late in December.

Andrew Wallace died at the home of his youngest son, William Wallace, about 1844. His remains awere interred in the Presbyterian Cemetary at Kars, North Gower Township. His wife continued to reside with her son, William, who later moved to Perth County. She died January 2nd, 1872, and her remins were interred in Toy's Cemetary in the vicinity of Cromarty.

Taking Andrew Wallace and his wife Ellen Fulton as the first generation for this side of the family tree, their family is the second generation, and so far as known as follows:

1. Jean Wallace born January 7th, 1802; married Feb 5th, 1819 to James Brown, native of Rutherglen, Scotland; died June 6th, 1892. This couple did not come to Canada until 1829.

2. Robert Wallace married Elizabeth Callander. He was regarded as the strong man among the Wallace's but received injury lifting the key-stone for a chimney. He lived for a few years after this but never recovered his strength. He died probably around 1832 and his remains were buried in a plot on his father's farm in Dalhousie.

3. James Wallace (1804-1850) married Janet Graham. He came to North Gower with the other members of the family and settled on the east half of Lot 18, concession 3.

4. Hugh Wallace (1807-1844) married Isabella Callander. He settled on the west half of Lot 19, concession 3.

5. John Wallace (1810-1873) married first Jane Muir, second Margaret Tierney, third Mary Montgomery. He settled on the west half of Lot 18, concession 3, North Gower Township.

6. Andrew Wallace was killed in young manhood, by the branch of a tree falling on him while he was engaged in clearing the land. His remains were laid in the same plot as those of his brother, Robert.

7. Margaret Wallace (1814-1857) married William Callander. They too settled in North Gower Township coming about the same time as the Wallace family.

8. Ellen Wallace (1818-1863) married John Craig of Dalhousie. About 1852 John Craig went to Southern Australia and decided to settle there. In 1854 his wife and family joined him. Her descendants remained as settlers in Australia.

9.William Wallace (1825-1904) married Lilias I. Park. He settled on the east half of Lot 19, concession 3 North Gower Township. In the autumn of 1863 he sold this property to his nephew Robert S. Wallace and moved to the vicinity of Cromarty, Perth County and later he moved to Marquette, Michigan, USA.
