He therfore had to obtain three depositions to prove the existence of his sixth child. Two of these read as follows: "That Peter Reid of the Bridgeton Canadian Society had when he left this country for the Lanark Settlement in the province of Upper Canada, six children viz two boys and four girls. Certified by Will McCartney, minister and M. Shirra, Elder, Old Kilpatrick, 17 Mar 1823." "Margaret, lawful daughter of Peter Reid and Jean Harvie in Kilpatrick was born on the 26th day of July and baptised on the 4th of August in the year one thousand, eight hundred and six. Old Kilpatrick, 17th March 1823. Extracted from the register of this parish by M. Shirra. Bonnie Guthrie Kuehl, in her story of the James Guthrie family, says that Peter Reid was born at Kirtown, Scotland, a son of Peter Reid and Margaret McKinlay.
