    Donald Barber
Don was born on a farm near Kings corners in Nipissing Township, the 6th of 14 children of Julia (Stillar) and John Barber. He used to walk into Hotham to attend school. As he grew older he would help his father thrashing grain in the fall and then worked at Zubrich's sawmill. at one time he ran the Nipissing Hotel while he also operated a 30 foot charter boat taking fishing trips and cargo between Chapman's Landing on Lake Nipissing and Keystone Lodge on the French River.
On November 12, 1924 Don married Hazel Clarke at St. Albans Anglican Church in Restoule.
He took his family to live at Lost Channel, near Port Loring on the Pickerel River system while he worked for the Lands & Forests. Returning to Hotham in 1935 Don owned a sawmill which he ran until he turned his attention to farming. At one point he took delivery of a steam operated tractor which weighed over 7 tons and took him two days to drive it to his farm.
After the children had all grown up Don's dogs and cows became like family to him. One dog rode on his lap while he drove the tractor until one day the hay bailer caught fire and the dog ran straight home. Another dog used to accompany him to his watch on the deer hunt and one day a bear approached them and swatted the dog as it attacked the bear. Don shot the bear at a time when he would rather look at the animals than shoot them. He huntted until he was eighty. Don played the violin and would accompany Hazel on the organ for family hymn sings.

Manion. Mr. Thomas Manion, another old resident of Bathurst, died on Friday at the home of his daughter Mrs. Peter Noonan, on the ninth line. About four days previous to his death, he fell on the ice and hurt his hip. He, however, was thought to be getting better, but last Friday again complained of a soreness in his hip. He had not drunk more than one or two mouthfuls of a hot drink his daughter had prepared for him when he fell over dead. Mr. Manion was born in Bathurst in 1815, and was consequently 88 years old. He was the son of the late Mr. Thomas Manion, who emigrated to this country at the close of the Peninsular War, in which campaign he took part. The gentleman about whom this obituary is written was a well-known resident of Bathurst. He at one time lived in South Sherbrooke, but for the past number of years lived on the ninth line Bathurst. He was married about the year 1836 to Ellen Nagle, of Bathurst, who predeceased him 28 years ago. There were ten children born to them, eight of whom are living to-day: William, up the K. P. R. [Kingston and Pembroke Railway]; James, in New York; John, 3rd line Bathurst; Mrs. Geo. Stella, Nipissing; Mrs. Deacon, Belleville; Mrs. Frank Kerr, Lombardy and a married woman in Chicago. The funeral took place on Sunday to St. John's Church thence to the Catholic Cemetery.
