    In 1848, when 18, went to US with cousin Peter who went on to Australia. John worked at Rygate, Maine, then spent two years in Canada, then to Andover, Massachusetts.
    In1852 to the California Gold Rush, saving $1000, went back to Andover and then on to Perth where he worked for sister Mary's husband Henry Leckie.
    In 1860, John and his wife Isabella Ritchie moved to Glasgow, Minnesota.
