Mr. Duncan McGregor - Though not one of the pioneer settlers of the Balderson neeighborhood, Mr. Duncan McGregor latterly became the oldest resident of that locality, and none but the most aged of this noted settlement remembered the time when he and his brother James were not residents of the locality. Born in the Perthshire Highland of Scotland in 1817, he came to Canada in 1843, and followed his trade as carpenter in Drummond until about fifty years ago, when he bought the Campbell farm on the 8th line of Drummond which he worked up to a few years ago. Before coming to Canada, he went to Glasgow, where he learned his trade of carpenter, and was married to Miss Grace Campbell. In that city the two eldest sons, John and Peter were born.
Some of the best barns of the day in Drummond and Bathurst were built by him, the first one he constructed being teh Somerville barn near Prestonvale. He never forgot his trade, but busied himself at it, during his long life on the farm, as well as at tilling the soil.
Mr McGregor was a man of decided individuality, and had strong convictions, especially in matters of politics and religion. He was an uncompromising Liberal, and an equally staunch Presbyterian, and could give excellent reasons why he was both.
His eldest son John died some years ago, and other children were buried by them in their infancy, his wife preceding himself to the grave nine years. Mr. McGregor's death was caused principally by the infirmities of age, and he passed away quietly on Tuesday night, 7th instance, the funeral taking place to the old Campbell cemetery, Drummond, yesterday. It was one of the largest burial processions seen in the locality for some years. Rev. J.S. McIlraith, Presbyterian clergyman, conducting the services. He leaves four children: Peter C., of Almonte, registrar of North Lanark, upon whom the degree of Doctor of Laws was lately conferred by Queen's College; Margaret and James M. of Bathurst, in whose place he died.
