Word has been received in Banff that another old-timer connected with the early history of the town has passed on to his final reward -- Mr. Walter Garrett, who had reached the age of eighty years. His demise took place at the family residence, 2326 Howard Street, Victoria, where he had lived in retirement for the past twelve years, on Monday, October 12th.
The late Mr. Garrett came west about 1890 and worked on the Canadian Pacific Railway construction along with the late Dave White, a pioneer Banff merchant. He took up permanent residence in the village in 1895 and later became a government employee and held positions with them for 23 years. The job from which he retired in 1930 was that of having charge of the Upper Hot Springs Bath House; his retirement completed thirty-five years' residence in Banff.
Born in Hampshire, England, the late Mr. Garrett is survived by his wife, Elizabeth Faith; one daughter, Olive, of Victoria; one son Edward, of Edmonton: two sisters, the Misses Emma Garrett and Ellen Garrett, of Milner, B.C.; one brother, James, in England, and three grandchildren. The late Mrs. A. Blackbourn, of Banff, was another daughter.
The funeral took place on Friday, October 16th with interment in the Royal Oak Burial Park, at Victoria, Vancouver Island.
Walter married Elizabeth Faith Chapman on 18 Jan 1893 in St. Stephen Church, Walworth, Surrey, England. Elizabeth (daughter of James Chapman and Elizabeth Ann Mason) was born on 26 Dec 1864 in Winchester, The Worthys, Kings Worthy Parish, Hampshire, England; died on 23 Mar 1951 in Victoria, Capital Regional District, British Columbia, Canada; was buried in Royal Oak Burial Park, Victoria, British Columbia, Canada.
