    Died:
    James Ferguson March 12th, 1907.

The news of the death of Mr. James Ferguson at Montreal on Sunday was heard with very great regret by a large circle of relatives friends and acquaintance It is true that he had been in extremely poor health of late it is also true that he had passed the allotted time of main, three score years and ten, but it was thought on to the day before his death that he was recovering and none were prepared for the announcement of his demise He had been at a sanitarium in Montreal since the beginning of January for treatment and it was hoped he would be benefited but on Saturday pneumonia developed and on Sunday morning he passed away. He was 71 years old and was born in Montague on the farm where he lived all his life until he moved to Smith Falls about ten years ago He had a good farm, he managed it well and was eminently successful being counted among the wealthiest farmers of the township. He was a man of scrupulous honesty and the together with his thrift and his intelligence gained for him the confidence of the community in which he lived, and made him a leader. For twenty-two years he served in the township, Council and for eighteen of those years he was Reeve and thus a member of the County Council. Twice he stood for Parliamentary honors as an independent Conservative but was defeated both times. In Smiths Falls, he lived a quiet retired life enjoying the fruits of his earlier years of toil and effort. He was elected to the Council here for one term did not relish the work and was not a candidate for re-election He was a man of blameless life, a kind neighbor and a good friend Those who knew him best liked his most. In religion he was a Presbyterian, a life long member of St. Andrew's church, and in Politics a Conservative. From the time he was 18 years old he was a member of Numogate Orange Lodge. He is survived by his wife and seven children, two sons, J. Davison and J. Stewart on the farm in Montague, Mrs. T. Irvine, Montague, Mrs. J. Blackburn, North Elmsley, Misses Jennie Maggie and May at home. The funeral will take place tomorrow at 2 o'clock pm from his late home on Water Street east to McVean's cemetery

According to the Irish naming tradition (seems to have been applied in John B's family):
Sarah's mother was ELIZA or ELISA
    Sarah's father was HENRY
Sarah's second name or mother's name of choice for baby was MARGARET
    Sarah's eldest sister was HARRIET

    Thomas's mother was ANNE
    Thomas's father was JOHN
    Thomas's eldest brother was GEORGE
    Thomas's eldest sister was SARAH

November 1817, several families, including four Poole families were preparing to leave the following spring for Canada. This took place and one of the Poole families had 11 members. There was a note in my source re staking claims for 50 acres each in Eastern Ontario.

    ?u?E Miller notes:
?/u?George, Thomas, Jacob Poole arrived from Ireland on the 'Atlantic' on 23 June 1819 and on the authority of the commissioner of forces they located 8 Mar 1820 in Drummond. (C 12 L SW 24, NE 24, SW 25). I have determined that it was John who settled on this parcel of land and that Thomas settled on C4 L6

    Died:
    John Ferguson, Sept. 12, 1892
One by one, the pioneers of this section of Ontario are passing away and during the past week the angel of death has been busy in our midst. On Monday last, Mr. John Ferguson, one of the first settlers in this section passed peacefully away at the residence of his son, James Ferguson, Reeve of Montague, at the advanced age of 86 years and 3 months. The deceased was born at Johnstown near Paisley, Scotland and emigrated to Canada in 1821 when just 15 years old. He settled first in the township of Dalhousie with his father and mother, but took up land himself in the township of Montague in the year 1832 where he resided to the time of his death. In 1830 he married Anne Stewart who preceded him to the great hearafter some 13 years ago. Two sons and four daughters survive: James, Reeve of Montague and John, Clerk of the same township, the former lives on the old homestead and the latter has a store at Numogate. The daughters are Mrs Tucker of Carleton Place, Mrs. Tetlock, Mrs. Burns of Drummond Township and Mrs Stewart of Renfrew village. He leaves 37 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren.

The subject of the sketch was therefore one of the most highly respected residents of this section. He was a man of fine physique, clear intellect, and wonderful endurance. He retained all his faculties to the end and within a few days of his demise could read a newspaper without the aid of glasses.

When he first came to this section there was but one shanty where the town of Smiths Falls now stands, and it was his delight on a cold winter's evening to gather a few of his friends together around the hearth fire and relate the many thrilling incidents of pioneer life. On many occasions he carried a bag of flour or other provisions from the town of Perth to his house in the rear of Dalhousie, 25 miles distant when his only guide was the blazed trees. At the building of the Rideau Canal he worked under Colonel By for three years and used to tell many amusing incidents of those early days. He made and retained many further friends and died regretted by all and disliked by none. In religion he was a Presbyterian and in politics a Liberal of the old school, although in latter years when he did vote, he cast it for the Conservative side.

His funeral which took place on Wednesday afternoon last to the cemetary at Numogate was the largest seen in years, thus showing the high esteem in which deceased was held. Reverend C.H. Cooke of St. Andrew's Church conducted the obsequies. The News join in sympathy to mourning relatives and friends.

Jonathan married Ann Stewart. Ann (daughter of John Stewart and Jane Buchanan) was born in 1806 in Lanarkshire, Scotland; died on 11 Jul 1879 in Montague Twp, Lanark County, Ontario, Canada; was buried in McVean Cemetery, Numogate, Montague, Lanark, Ontario, Canada.
