(Research):Biography : From "History of Fillmore County;" Vol. II; Frederick Curtiss-Wedge, comp.; Chicago: H.C. Cooper, Jr. & Co., 1912; pp. 1032-33 :
Alexander Ferguson, deceased, who was one of the successful and highly respected farmers of Fillmore county, was born in North Sherbrooke, Canada, August 19, 1837, son of Duncan and Barbara (Currie) Ferguson, natives of Argyleshire, Scotland, who came to Fillmore county in 1862, where the father acquired land which he broke and developed. Alexander was educated in the schools of Canada, came with his parents to this county in 1862, and purchased 200 acres of land in section seven, Arendahl township, where he engaged in general agriculture and became a substantial citizen. In connection with his general farming interests he raised many cattle, sheep and hogs, and realized from this branch a profitable income. He was a staunch Republican and was elected to serve as a member of both town and school boards, discharging the duties of all offices to which he was elected with credit to himself and with satisfaction to all. He was united in marriage to Janet Gillmore in the year 1864, and their marriage was blessed with two children: Duncan and Janet G. The latter is now Mrs. Samuel Randall. Janet (Gillmore) Ferguson died September, 1867, and on February 14, 1882, Mr. Ferguson married Maggie McKay, a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Peter McKay, and to this marriage four children were born: Alister P., Ethel M., Florence M. and Charles McDonald. Ethel M. is now Mrs. Henry Cocker, of Winona county. Alexander Ferguson died April 9, 1886. Mrs. Ferguson then rented the farm until 1900, since which date she and her children have conducted it. The farm is known as "Faraway."

(note - The biography does not mention the marriage on May 1,1873 to Isabella Gilmore, sister of his 1st wife, Janet. She, like her sister Janet, died of Typhoid fever on Sept.4,1873, four months after their marriage)

"We sailed from Greenock upon the 29th of April, at five a.m. The ship got ashore upon Wednesday, May 2nd, at midnight, about twelve miles south of Dublin, near the mountains of Wicklow. I was awake at the time and felt the shock; I was instantly on deck. It had rained hard and so dark we couldnot perceive an object at arm's length, but in a few minutes the stars appeared and to our horror we saw the rock twice mast high. I gave up all for lost, but concealed my apprehensions, and seemed not concerned, that I might encourage those about me, whose condition is easier conceived than described. However, we got off the next day at eleven o'clock, in a miraculous manner, with the assistance of two officers, and two boat's crews, belonging to the revenue cutter who came on board at daylight, armed to defend us from being plundered, not knowing our strength. On Saturday the 5th we were overtaken by a storm and the whole got sick...arrived at Quebec, upon Saturday, 16th of June at four o'clock, making a disagreeable passage of 48 days, ten hours."

"There are a great deal of people lodging here in temporary huts. There is a great deal of trouble and a number of deaths, owing to the heat of the weather and a change of food. We are all in good health, except little James. My health is better than it has been for some years past. I laid off my flannels at sea and felt no inconvenience; I have felt no rheumatism since."

"There are a great mumber who have not got land yet, and they say, they will not get it until another township is surveyed. The evil is, in going into the woods so late in the season, it will be impossible for them to get their heavy luggage with them as they will have to carry everything on their backs."

    Census:
James Gilmour was still on his lot at the time of the 1834 inspection report, but his family was 'scattered in Ontario'. The land he drew was considered worthless.
