Notes: James left home shortly after his father's death, when he was a young man of about nineteen or twenty years of age, and spent some years farming in the states of Minnesota and North Dakota. During one summer in Minnesota, he was employed as a sheaf-binder on one of the old-time reapers. The knotter attachment for binding the sheaves had not been invented at tha time and it required two men to bind the grain by hand as it was elevated to a platform erected on the machine.
